Cliffumper is a headache. And I can't see Takara getting round to MP Mini-Autobots any time soon. The 3P market is just about giving us MP quality Mini-Autobots. Huff and Brawny are good efforts. Still waiting to hear what Nickos thinks of Wardog... anyone would think he's busy or something...
Oh and Trailbreaker! He's an 84er, of course.
Reflector's a head scratcher n'all.

Phil's demonstrated the problem very clearly. Underlying Takara's desire to produce animation accurate robots they've also been trying to produce accurate licensed car modes, which is fine for the car robots but won't work for minibots who had obviously super deformed car modes.
They've got away with Bumblebee because his car mode is still 'cute' when real world accurate compared to others, and Badcube got Brawn right because Brawn's car mode doesn't look deformed anyway. It's just smaller. But you can't win with Cliffjumper. There's just no way to do him and cover all the bases.
I think they'd have to go with what they've started and do a real world accurate car, but given the mess they seem to have made of Ironhide in trying to mix cartoon and vehicle I wouldn't have high hopes for the end result.

That is heartening to realise, but how would they get Huffer's robot the right size if his cab mode was in scale with the other cars?

Reflector's a head scratcher n'all. I think there are enough 3P options to cover Reflector. The alt mode there isn't a problem, they fit in the Megatron/Soundwave department for scale.

As an aside to this, what's the consensus of opinion on MP09? People say the 'new' scale starts with MP10, but Rodimus being the same height as Prime works for me. I'd like to see a separate figure for Hot Rod, squatter and less slender, but MP09 as Rodimus seems fine to me.

I stand corrected. Meantime, I think from what I've seen, Rodimus' sports car is too big, isn't it?

Hotrod needs a do-over. Absolute worst MP he is. As Rodimus, he was passable, but he really sucks as Hotrod.
However, if they did a new version, they would go with the cartoon which is exactly a major reason why he sucked in the first place. (The other being the car mode is useless and doesn't even clear the ground) hotrod needs to be done after the toy.

Unless you hope, in vain, for a MP Reflector that's not just Sunbow inspired , but imitates the G1 toy. A lot to ask, daft to ask really, in terms of Reflector. But it comes down to what we've talked about before, about what the Masterpiece line SHOULD be. I don't just want Sunbow, I want the 'blend'. Sunbow/G1 update/ultimate G1 representation. Prowl was perfect. Wheeljack, edging towards too much Sunbow, but still ok. Bumblebee, not perfect, but actually a damn good effort. Apollyon, Huff and Brawny, better than you should be able to hope for from a 3P company. MP Strike planes, very good. Soundwave, near perfect. MP 10, near perfect. Quakewave, magnificent. Tracks, Lord help looks a pretty perfect blend. Ironhide (& Ratchet)... miles off. Questionable Sunbow, terrible G1 update/ultimate version. I'm questioning what I want in my MP collection.

Ooh, don't do that. You'll end up with The Fear about the whole thing. What you want in your MP collection is what Takara offer you; hoping beyond that lies disappointment on a magnificent scale. I think eventually I'd like my MP collection to be the 84/85 crew plus the movie cast. I'm not worried if we don't get combiners, although one token effort would be nice (Devastator).
The only time I begin to question Masterpiece is when I have the 'do I want a toy or a display piece?' argument in my head. But Generations has come on so well in the last few years that isn't such an issue now; there are outlets for both. The problem now is where to spend the money. What takes priority: is it the ultimate display? Or the ultimate toy box?

You read my thoughts, Pinwig ol' Cyber-pal. The Fear? The Fear is fast becoming an Old Friend, to be replaced by.... I don't know what.
MP Ironhide is a big let down. My MP extemporisations may need a reconfigure.
One can't play with MPs (although I class posing as playing). I do like to play with my TFs still, especially with the childrens. There is the power of Generations.

I want an Mp of that piano guy from Target:2006. Who *doesn't*? That reminds me, I really must write that fanfic I've been planning for years centred around him... or maybe it's best if I don't.

Again, that doesn't bother me, and Means you could get away with an elongated Porsche rear end on Cliffjumper.
I would kill for a Masterpiece EJ Su Bumblebee, though...

Isn't his design what CW Leader Starscream/Thundercracker are kind of based on? Kind of. Ish.

That works with Bumblebee - he is small & the rest of his car mode needs to go somewhere, also makes a good shield. But I expect some people wanted the circle on his back.

I can understand that, given how successful movie-line toys have been. Thankfully there is still variety amongst the lines.

Maybe there's not as big a demand for these obscure e-hobby character repaints as everyone is assuming there is. I mean, is anyone really honestly demanding a Hauler or Tigertrack? At least on a level that would make these absurdly overpriced MPs feasible? As much as I LOVE the concept of Marvel repaints, G2 Sideswipe is the only one of the three that was successful. I'm dying for Marvel MP Grimlock, but it's just too absurdly overpriced for what it is. As for others, you cannot get Tigatron out of Cheetor without a massive amount of reworking. Like, even the frame needs to be changed. And cartoon accuracy is the law of the land in MP. You (MP fans in general, not directed at anyone here) can't criticize someone for rejecting G1 MP for being too cartoon accurate, and then turn around and demand a cartoon inaccurate BW repaint because Toy. They're just insanely different: For the same reason I can't see Bumblebee ever being repainted into Cliffjumper. (A complete reshell, sure, but not a straight repaint) And you can't get Goldbug out of Bumblebee, even with a Reshell: Honestly, given that Takara has chosen to not do every "obvious" repaint, and instead chosen to try different things like G2 Sideswipe and whatever was going through their mind with Hotrod, I think shows that things like Hauler and Sunstorm have underperformed in the past, or aren't as in demand as western fans think.

HAULER!!!!!

Post by Philip Ayres on Jun 5, 2017 22:29:42 GMT
The problem with Hauler is to be cartoon accurate, he's essentially Grapple, which exists anyway, so you have to go eHobby toy Constructicon Green which I don't think anyone is keen on!
I will gladly buy Police Car Sunstreaker. And probably the red version too!

I think they're being crazy in not doing the obvious thing, which would provide guaranteeed multiple-purchases of every mold - variant Yomtov-coloured MPs! Just think of the background possibilities!

So all MPs I want now, in this order. New molds unless otherwise stated:
BW Megatron- plus toy based retool, and T-Rex repaint Rattrap- Packrat repaint Waspinator- Buzzsaw repaint w/new head Rhinox Tarantulas Tigatron- Copies Cheetor's engineering. Shadow Panther retool Terrorsaur- Hydra/Lazorbeak, and Fractyl repaints Airazor Scorponok- COULD be pretooled into Quickstrike if they're clever enough with the engineering design Blackarachnia- Copies Tarantulas' engineering Inferno
And then we hit the Transmetals, Fuzors, Tranmetal IIs, and BWII and Neo leaders.
And if we absolutely *must* continue with G1, then give us Megatron, Soundwave and tapes, Ratchet, Hotrod, Wheeljack, Ultra Magnus, Prowl, and Shockwave in Marvel colors And Optimus, Starscream, Ramjet, and Grimlock in G2 toy colors. Could give them the Yaneger treatment, too.
