The first RiD Grimlock isn't a traditional Grimlock head.

I agree completely. The initial wave was hugely disappointing and the figures and gimmicks have improved a lot during the run. There's a lot more variety with this line than there was with Prime/Beast Hunters and a lot of the toys are simply fun to play with.
That first Steeljaw was a terrible, terrible figure, and it didn't help that Grimlock's arm broke the first time you tried to transform it because of a moulding error.

The first RiD Grimlock isn't a traditional Grimlock head. It is show accurate though; it's not really a fault of the toy.

With the eyes and mouth and not visor and mouthgaurd?
Yeah, if he's show-accurate I can't call that the wrong head.

Right, so overload actually transforms, which is one up on Drift, and his firing mechanism is stronger but only works in vehicle mode where Drift can fire in both. The fact it's a rolling ball though is so much more satisfying than Drift's discs.
I like his transformation, but the vehicle looks better in pictures than it does in hand. Those hollow robot arms aren't that attractive either and although it feels like it, it isn't much more articulated than Drift. The plastic also feels cheap in this. Lots of marks where sprues have been cut.
Undeniably fun though. It does feel like a toy with a purpose and the firing mechanism does seem sturdy when it's all connected up.

It's a proper fun toy, love mine. I mean Jonathan's.
Tabs on shoulders/tank rear for mounting cyclone Minicons.
Pinwig needs more Cyclone Minicons. There's a battle pack with 3 in plus the dual cannon version of Slipstream that The Entertainer and B&M have for a tenner.

I bought Hammer. Two seems enough, Drift's only got his two. Sounds like Phil has been sucked in by Minicon Madness! I do like the fact Backtrack transforms basically by squashing him. That's clever. Also that the tension in the cradle that holds him is spot on, oh and that he sits behind Overload's head to fill that hole in robot mode.
All I could ask from this is knees and elbows.

Hammer has a post peg hole between his feet so the bird can stand on the tank. I have: Backtrack Ransack Back Forth Hammer (in THREE different colours) Major Mayhem Lord Doomitron Undermine Bludgeon is the only RiD Cyclone I need

Oh that is awesome! Peg hole excellence! It's a pity the tabs on Overload's forearms aren't the right shape for Hammer to sit on his arm.

No, because the boxset one one is a gaudy mess. But Burns needs this boxset:

Phil does not have Bludgeon. That is the main task. Once I have Bludgeon I have a complete set of the RiD Cyclone Minicon characters. Beyond that I do not have: The original Anvil, partnered with Bettlepack Sideswipe
Scorch Strike Undertone & Blizzard Strike Backtrack from Mini Con 4 pack 1
The aforementioned Lord Doomitron from Minicon 4 Pack 3 Then we get into the murky world of TF Adventure repaints. Each of the Minicons from the Battlepacks (smaller figure with armour and Minicon, gets 2 repaints in Japan Ironjam. a repaint of Back/Forth
Gravity, a repaint of Bludgeon
Volcano, a repaint of Major Mayhem
Barithunder, a repaint of Anvil I don't want to go there. And Crazybolt has an Ransack repaint too!
