Read the last three issues of Hulks to do the Secret Wars tie ins in one hit. I enjoyed both stories, but they both had abrupt endings which didn't really provide satisfying conclusions. I suppose I'm missing a bit of context. Despite having read these and the main nine secret Wars issues, it still feels like a story that's happening somewhere else and I'm just getting the incidental stuff rather than the actual story.
Contrast that with the Civil War book, which I don't feel lost with at all, and it makes me feel Secret Wars generally hasn't been that well handled. Why was Steve Rogers dressed like Thor and riding a dinosaur? Was that just some other Rogers from another collapsed universe? In Legends he's an old man still.

As expected Essential X-Men 27 is the last of this volume with the remaining issues from the Bendis run. Just the annuals they didn't collect. New number 1 next month.
It is, somewhat surprisingly, the last issue of Astonishing Spider Man too! To find out how Spider-Man & The X-Men ends I have to buy at least one, maybe two issues of the new title (They got half way through issue 4 of 6) A little annoyed about this!
Also surprisingly it ISN'T the last issue of Mighty World of Marvel! That's back next month with issue 29. Daredevil 16 this month so I imagine MWOMs gonna run till issue 31 & Daredevil 18, after which they should press the reboot button. SHIELD back next month too, issue 9 of 12, but I imagine that could be 2 issues in each of the remaining MWOMs as Silver Surfer & Ms Marvel complete their current volumes this issue.

Ah! Now there is an interesting question! No, really, it is! There were 7 issues for the original Civil War series and Panini's Civil War is running one of those per issue PLUS backup, so SEVEN seems the obvious answer. It is an interesting question and one I've been pondering this afternoon. I Finally found Civil War #5 in Tesco of all places, which is odd only because in my one that's the only Panini book they have. That does make me think this is a limited run tie in thing being punted to a wider range of retailers than the usual output, and it'll end with #7 to match the original run. So Phil, where are we now with this? If this is sticking to one Civil War part per issue and maybe ending with issue #7, what are the free slots going to be filled with? this issue says the Spidey story is part 4 of 6, yet the possibly entirely unreliable wikipedia page here suggests the civil war tie in goes up to #538. The Thunderbolts issues are finished, and the wiki suggests the New Avengers ones are too, but they missed two parts out. The next issue box at the back of #5 unusually only lists two stories for next issue, the main title and Spider-Man. So if the theoretical last two issues are like this: Issue #6: Civil War #6 and Spider-Man #536/537 Issue #7: Civil War #7 and Spider-Man #538 Is there an epilogue to take the last slot?

Yes, my Smiths has a separate hanger for the Civil War book, labeled as such, but it's been empty since #4 went off sale. Same here Browny, I can probably get you a #5 from my tesco if you're short. Try a big Tesco. I found it roughly in the sci fi section, although it was chance I saw it.
So Phil, if that epilogue will complete those seven issues, are there any other runs you'd recommend that add to the story? This book has been very heavy on Iron Man and Spider-Man, but not a huge amount from the Cap side.

Yes: The Wolverine tie in is very good and covers an aspect of the start of the story that's been forgotten about elsewhere. The Captain America issues are good, but then any Brubaker Cap that's pre 25 is pure gold. There's the Winter Soldier Winter Kills special which is bundled with those issues in a trade too and that's great. You know the Thunderbolts stuff is good, the issues round that are worth reading. Cable & Deadpool's issues are great but the whole series is I recall the Ms Marvel issues being good and an aspect of that has recently showed up in Panini's MWOM Daredevil story. Can't remember much about the three Punisher issues listed there, but Fraction mentioned them on his blog recently and the related issue 4 is a must read. See tmukhub.proboards.com/post/246950/thread and tmukhub.proboards.com/post/246988/threadRelated to the story is Daredevil: The Devil Inside & Out which explains why Daredevil'd running around with Cap when Matt Murdoch's in prison.

Excellent, thanks for that. I will do some trawling and add some books to my Amazon wishlist.
What actually is Frontline? How did it manage 11 issues when the main title was seven?

There are some nice jumbo omnibus editions that collect together loads of tie in issues, but they're all out of print and cost a bomb. I will have a look at some of the smaller trades I think.

Frontline literally plummets off the writing cliff with the last issue. It was mostly ok up to that point and then it literally reverses the books entire direction in terms of its handling of the issues, develops a tin-ear for dialogue and literally flips the characterisation of its central character for no obvious reason. It feels like it goes from "this is a complicated issue where people would have differing views", to "Iron Man is right as we all know! Anyone who can't see that is WRONG and stupid!" so fast it'll give you whiplash.

Panini day and lots of new number 1s.
Slightly surprisingly there's a price rise - now £3.99 - which makes my decision to drop a couple feel better.
I only bought Astonishing Spider-Man 1, despite intending to drop the title, to finish off the Spider-Man & The X-Men story ..... it gets half way through the final issue before making me buy the next issue for the ending. Sloppy work Panini, why didn't you print the six issues over the last two issues of the previous volume and then start a new one? So I'm going to have to buy the 3.99 issue 2 for 10 pages of story. Grrrrr
Wolverine & Deadpool is All New Wolverine & various Deadpool issue. Letters page says 1/3 Wolverine 2/3 Deadpool going forward so that doesn't look good for Old Man Logan which I'd hoped to see :-( (Did the original Old Man Logan get a Panini reprint?)
Avengers Universe is All New Avengers and some Avengers 0 this month. I'd held off reading the digital All New Avengers volume so not to spoil this. Next issue shows Uncanny Avengers as expected and the Avengers 0 portion of Uncanny is in this issue.
Didn't get Hulks

I've checked and the new #1's were advertised in the concluding issues of the previous volumes as being at the previous price of £3.50 so I suspect that and the (refreshingly honest) explanation given in the titles for the jump to £3.99 was not planned until very late in the day. While it brings Paninivision in line with Titan's prices it is a shame and I can see them losing some readers who may have to drop titles. Also, bumping up prices by a hefty amount when relaunching is a great 'jumping off point'. I'll have to think what to drop elsewhere to keep up with Paninivision.
Whereas the direct market can bump the comics prices up continually and those customers keep buying anyway, UK newsstand is quite different. If they hit a tipping point when casual readers/children/parents find they're too expensive then these titles just go away. I want there to be a reasonable amount of comics in newsagents for kids/young folk to be able to get that have more than two words on a page. Imagine the horror of the market shrinking to just those bagged shite 'comics' which assume a vocabulary of 5 words and an attention span of 1 minute!
