Panini continue to send me free comics! The Morbious bookazine surprisingly turned up today. Did I order it? Nope! Did I pay for it? Nope!

Another random free comic has arrived from Panini! #9 of their now dead X-Men title from last November. Er. Um?
Panini have now sent me the first 9 issues of X-Men, the first 10 of their Marvel Universe and a Morbius bookazine for...nowt. Not paid a penny.
I can only assume it's because I am still on their system as a pre-Covid times subscriber...but I got all the titles I paid for back in the day!
Oh well, I'll get to now see what the current New Mutants title is like before the x-comic gets chucked in the pile of stuff to go to charity shop.
The contents page asks readers to write in. Er, no, you're cancelled next issue!

Most of the bookazines are read once and charity shopped, but keeping Eternals: Only Death Is Eternal. That was bloody brilliant.

The mystery package has arrived.
It is...Marvel Essential #10. Previously reported as ending with #12 in March, the editorial reveals it is canned as of this issue. Golly.

One wonders if the Batman title has quietly expired. Should have been #11 last week but not in WH Smiths and nor is it on Panini's site.

I see Hachette are reheating their marvel graphic novel collection with another relaunch. Wasn't much space in Smiths for the panini stuff with that cuckoo in the nest.

I had a flicker of interest at it being the first of a partwork, but knowing it's Hachette put me off. Never again.

Only previously subsribed to one Hachette series for a bit (their first Marvel one) and had no problems.

Was the Spider-Man one always 4 weeks, I thought it had gone fortnightly?
|
|
|
Post by The Doctor on Feb 27, 2022 21:20:47 GMT
It had been fortnightly for several years until all Panini newsstand titles were cancelled during lockdown. When it came back it was a 4-weekly title. Given that and the Batman title have survived while the more expensive Marvel Essentials and X-Men titles died I would not be surprised if it was to increase frequency if the sales are there.

Maybe that's the price point they should stick with, and leave the higher end stuff for the bookazine and partworks.

I think so. It was worthwhile trying the £8 format but the market said no.
Panini's Selects line of bookazines is now monthly with a subscription option so seems to have replaced the latter. Panini calls them bookazines but they're trades.
It appears that the newsstand audience will support £3 floppies or £10 trades of a complete story so at least there's that.
Partworks tend to vanish from many newsagents after the initial issues.

Yup.
Only thing is X-Men is a bit convoluted now, would be say doing a Classic X-Men would be the way to go. Run the X-Men Adventures stuff, along with that X-Men 92 series for a bit, makes sense especially given that Disney are doing the sequel cartoon.

Panini's monthly Selects books tend to tie in to whatever Marvel show or movie is out and they feature material from different eras. It would not surprise me if a bookazine or two of that X-Men material were pumped out when the animated show revival airs.

True, but X-Men have been a fixture since the Essentials began and it would seem to be money on the table keeping them going, but a relaunch mid HOX/POX/WHATTHEFOX wouldn't make sense.

Very surprised to see the current Batman issue in the local Tescopolis. Their periodical section is small and they usually just have plastic crap comics rather than 'real' ones.
