Most Decepticons were not Decepticons until the War.

Ratbat and Scorponok were just leaders all their time though. (Ratbat filled Straxus' role but it was nothing to do with him plotting). Lord Zarak, of course, was actually a politician.

Isn't Starcream whole 'I'd be a better leader' shtick not political? Leadership does not equate to politics. -Ralph

But disagreeing or seeking to improve on a current leadership or methods within an organisation is political, surely.

That very much depends on how you define a political act.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #280 GI Joe and the Transformers: ...All Fall Down - Part 4: Superion tackles Devastator, turning the tide of the battle in favour of the allied forces. Shockwave doesn't care because he is pinning his hopes on Alpha. Scarlett and the Baroness plant their explosives on the power station and radio the General, who tells Dr Mindbender to use his device to send it into orbit. Alpha begins to transform... 4,000,000 Year Itch: Slag, created without the emotional dampners needed to keep him under control, runs riot in Autobase just as Optimus Prime visits the new installation for an inspection. Grimlock tries to occupy Prime while the other Autobots try to contain Slag - knowing last time this happened Slag wiped out almost an entire unit. Prime eventually leaves without realising, and Swoop exclaims he's thankful this happens only once every four million years. Elsewhere, Transformation thanks Bryan Hitch for last week's cover and excitedly reveals that Tracks will return to the comic next week; Steeljaw and Superion feature in the A-Z; Milky Way offer £1 off any toy or a fabulous Matchbox Milky Way '57 Chevy with twenty tokens from special packs; and on the letters' page, Dreadwind fends off complaints about the erroneous contents of the latest Collected Comics, admits the Punisher comic is no more and claims never to have heard of ' Five Faces of Darkness', seen on Sky TV by reader Robert McDonald of Bexhill-on-Sea.

This is a silly idea but well executed. The panels showing stuff going on behind Prime's back always make me laugh. Maybe I'm just imagining how it would be if animated by Chuck Jones. Martin

This week's TF strip was the last straw for young Ralph. He would hang around for one more week to see how GI Joe v Transformers would end and then...he was out!

Late again. 30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #281 GI Joe and the Transformers: ...All Fall Down - Part 5: The Baroness reveals she set the detonation timers and Alpha explodes in the sky. Superion overcomes Devastator and Serpentor withdraws his troops. Because Alpha was destroyed without his knowledge, Blaster wonders if he can trust the humans and commands the Joes to disengage too. Dr Mindbender silently escapes as Ratchet commends Goldbug. Hawk still lusts after Larkin, who is shot by an assailant on the Baroness's orders. Michael's mother doesn't believe he saw Alpha explode in the sky. Hawk lays a rose on Larkin's grave and has a little cry. Makin' Tracks: Attempts to resurrect Tracks keep being delayed by sabotage. Grimlock claims he knows nothing about this when questioned by Optimus, but is tasked with finding out what's going on. Grimlock is the saboteur, but instead of stopping the process again he ends up stuck in Wheeljack's ACU machine. Tracks is reactivated and assigned to the Earthforce, much to Grimlock's chagrin. Elsewhere, Transformation tells readers that the Matrix Quest returns next week; Swindle and Swoop feature in the A-Z; Colin manages to get Steve and the Giggly Sisters back to 1990; and on the letters' page, Dreadwind tells Carlo Caruso of Herne Bay that (contrary to what he said two weeks ago) Marvel no longer sell back issues of the comic.

End of an era for Burns. Having got each issue every week since #42 I dropped it with this issue. 16 weeks of the GI JOE V TF and Earthforce rubbish had worn me down. Not the last issue I would read though: I still read some of a mate's copies until #319 when the local newsagent couldn't get it on order any more so we thought it had been cancelled.
Ironically, the comic itself was just on the cusp of a major resurgence in quality!

The comic started going in the toilet circa #216. I kept going until #281. I gave it enough time to improve!

I only got to 231, but kept on with the US version. I have yet to work out where I started getting the UK one again. Not yet it seems.
I think the abrupt answer here about not selling back issues is a way of saying, actually, what we said two weeks ago about a back issues department was total bollocks.

30 Years Ago This Week: Issue #282 Kings of the Wild Frontier - Part 1: The Triggerbots search the barren deserts of Cheyne for the Matrix. They are interrupted by some locals, who ride by in a hurry chasing a child. The Autobots transform to help the child and attack the riders, who protest that things aren't what they seem. Shut Up! Inferno wonders why the captured members of the Mayhem Attack Squad (Bludgeon, Octopunch and Stranglehold) are so quiet in their cell. Suddenly, Strangehold begins to tear up the cell floor, still remaining silent, and Inferno deactivates the laser beams across the door to shoot him. Bludgeon silently mind-controls his sword and causes it to levitate out of the weapons store, piercing Inferno through the chest from behind. Inferno collapses and the Decepticons escape. Elsewhere, Transformation excitedly warns readers to look out for a Monster Munch competition next week; Tailgate and Tantrum feature in the A-Z; Colin tries and fails to make a movie; on the letters' page, Dreadwind assures Jason Raybone of Wolverhampton that Devastator is the only combiner who now can't combine and the reason will be revealed in the fullness of time; and on the cover in the corner box, a mysterious hand appears behind Optimus Prime.

I assumed it was because they'd been revived with Nucleon so they couldn't transform.

If that's some foreshadowing for the 1992 versions, well done to Marvel UK and Hasbro UK!

At this point the cover box storyline is the most compelling part of the comic.
However, this has one of the better late era UK 5-pagers if for nothing else: 'Bludgeon silently mind-controls his sword'.

However, this has one of the better late era UK 5-pagers if for nothing else: 'Bludgeon silently mind-controls his sword'. Yes, and Furman remembers (too late for Catilla) that it takes a lot more than being run through by a sword to kill a Transformer. Though it was stupid of the Autobots not to confiscate their Pretender shells or check whether any of their weapons had radio-controlled magnetic levitation capabilities. Why have a prison cell so crap you need to post a guard to watch it anyway? Why not just swap the futuristic energy bars for a strong door with a triple titanium padlock? Martin
