Does anyone know why they ditched the rock bubbles?

Probably because they just look like squashed bashed plastic.

I always liked the darker, more detailed look of the original cards. They looked a bit plain when they changed it. But changing the rock to smooth made sense as it looked like it was part of the 'eye' (with a plastic animal shoved into it).

That comparison feels woefully incomplete without Animutants, Biocombat and Beasties versions.

Do you think today's new collectors will look back in 25 years on today's toyline packaging with as much revererence as us oldies do for g1 and Beast Wars?

That's a good question. Wether it looks nice or not, Universe and Generations packaging has been less than memorable. Kingdom packaging is the only one that really actually stands out. ER, Siege, and Studio Series put more effort into their box inserts than the packaging itself. Netflix is as bland as it gets.
And Hasbro hasn't made a big deal out of the actual mainline TFs in years. AoE, TLK, Bumblebee, NuRid and Cyberverse haven't remotely memorable, package wise. Plus there are so many different types of toys in the mainlines now, each requiring all sorts of different types of packaging, it's really hard to create any sort of memorable uniformity.
The last time I remember any transformer line having any really truly distinctive memorable packaging, was TFP: Beast Hunters (and honestly I don't remember what that looked like. Even though I have a couple laying around somewhere)
Again, this isn't to say that I think TF packaging has been ugly or bad. Just not distinctive or memorable. I think the big change came in the shift to color design trying to snag your eyes from other toylines also on the shelf. And with that goal, a package doesn't need to be memorable, it just needs to catch your attention.

Ever since packaging had to go bilingual, it lost so much. I guess Armada had its own style - but nothing seems to stay the same long enough to get attached to it. I do like the current SS/WFC boxes but wish the actual Transformers logo was a bit more interesting. It's just like a sort of stamp on the side now - and has been since 2014. So We will have that to be nostalgic about one day (assuming it does go away first).

I think everything up to and including TFP will garner some sense of nostalgia down the line.
I mean, even the first movie line triggers a bit of nostalgia to me, seeing the packging and designs.

Wondering if I can be bothered to dig out my Beast Wars toys and see how many I got in rock bubbles.

Wish I'd listened to that voice in my head saying "Don't sling these" when I cleared out my older cardbacks a few years ago!
I find myself in need of pictures of the co-sell scenes from the Biocombat / Ani-Mutants BW pre Transmetal cardbacks.
IIRC there's four of them.
Nice and straight, as large and HQ as possible.
I believe there's similar scenes on the US Cards too if anyone can oblige?

My catalogue says I have nine 96/97 BW cardbacks in the loft somewhere, is that what you mean?

Ta. Appreciated. These are the four pairs of images I'm after better versions of as the ones I have are rough & small: Top Left I've only found on Ani-Mutants boxes/cards and shows the US w1 toys. I can find no evidence that this assortment configuration was ever released in Europe. Top Right shows the first Europe wide assortments. We got the basic wave here in early 98, but it was replaced quite quickly. The deluxe wave shown is similar to the one we got but there's three differences: as far as I can tell it was never sold in the UK but I've proved it exists on AniMutants and Biocombat cards. Bottom Left is the second UK Basic Wave and the first UK Deluxe wave (2nd Euro deluxe wave) Bottom Right is the third UK Basic Wave and the second UK Deluxe wave (3rd Euro deluxe wave)

I'll have a look. Usually I'd be able to pull out the BW box straight away, but I'm mid sort in the loft at the moment and everything is all over the shop.

Looking through my Beast Wars I just noticed something odd to me. Grimlocks on a different card. I always thought these were a single wave, either they aren't or they changed the packaging during their release.
