I'm not a big fan of the Optimus Primal but the level of perfection in that match up still impresses me.
There were also Waspinator from MW Thundercracker (the oversized Poundland KO was very similar in colour) Megatron from Universe Countdown. Oh and Tigertron.
Andy
And currently theres the Lio Prime thing and it seems another more BW based version on the way.

I can't find the post you're referring to.
I bought the Optimus Primal/Megatron Basic twin pack from Woolworths in January 1998; it was there before they had any other Beast Wars in stock and it was the first I'd seen in the UK.

Ah, right, found it. Well, he's either totally wrong or got extremely lucky with imports. It was definitely 1998 (or late 1997) that they were on general release as it was during my first Christmas break from uni.

Was it really that late? No wonder I bought so many on holidays in 96 and 97. I would say late 97 if not earlier. I was in Canada August 97 and I thought the first few waves were out at home by then.
But I had them all so can't say I was paying that much attention.

TRANSMETALS! Your thoughts? Transmetals - awesome! I love robot animals and each one is perfect (apart from Terrorsaur) Transmetals II - horrid and ugly ;(

They're fun Though TM2's are kinda boring

Why did we never get any Transmetal basics (apart from ho ho, Clawjaw and Spittor)? I seem to remember all the basics that year were Fuzors. Was the chroming still too expensive?

I guess so Matt?
I liked the Transmetals, even though it was such a gimmick to make the toys more like "proper" transformers that look more robotic.
However! I bought TM Rhinox in a lot a while ago and I simply can't transform the bugger any more, despite having him when I was younger. How can a person forget in just a few years??

A mixed bag realy.
For some reason I really like TM-Cheetor. I think it's the fact that the cheetah's head becomes the hands of the robot and also the fold out jet packs.
TM-Primal however not so much. He's a gorilla with a surfboard, I guess that should be awesome, but it's just too ridiculous.
TM-Megs however gets the thumbs up, despite having equally ludicrous roller skates.

He's a weird spindly bird thing with a horribly ugly face. He reminds me more of a TM2 to be honest.

TM Rhinox hurts your thumbs transforming him - while the Armada release doesn't & seems looser. [the pushing the chest plate out & legs round & out to form the hips]
TM2 had reg sized Optimus Minor & toys used for RID.

I did like how the TMs did look quite like their televisual counterparts. Aside from Rattrap's back, of course.

Preferred TM2 to TM as TM seemed like a weird descendant of original BW. TM2 seems like a different more avant-garde line.
My favorite fig from the BW era is TM2 Dinobot. Poseable, skeletal badass. I thought TM2 Megatron was just mindblowing for a Transformer.

I prefer TMs generally, but some of my favourite figures are from the TM2 line; Dinobot and Megatron.

Not really a fan of Transmetals. Cheetors not bad but I much prefer the original. The Ravage repaint is amazing though.
Rhinox and Terrorsaur I just do not like. Primal, Rattrap Airrazor and Waspinator are ok, but again I prefer the original.
Megatron is the only existing character that is improved by Transmetallyness.
Ramulas is one figure I really like, but is that TM or TM2?
TM2 I again don't really like. Megatron is again good, but I don't like Cheetor (Ravage again is good*) or Dinobot and they are the only other 2 I can think of.
Andy
* I think I might like the toy just not as Cheetor.

The TM2s were terrible for chipping paint on the chrome bits. Ramulus was terrible for it.
