The TM2s might have been better with more of a budget for plastic colours and paint apps. As it was, most of the detail wasn't picked out by the paint, and they just looked like an ugly mess.
I think that's why TMs were so good, because they had really clean panel lines, that didn't need a lot of detailing

Very true.
And weren't the CR Destrongers reused TM2 moulds? Their new paint jobs were much, much better.

I guess that proves my point really. TM2 Cybershark was absolutely horrific, but Sky-Byte is amazingly beautiful, and the paint really picks out every little detail. Definately worth getting if you can.
Of course, it is still a HORRID transformer, but I can forgive Sky-Byte just because he is so pretty.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned him yet, because Transmetal Tarantulas is easily one of my personal favourite TF toys to come out of any line, and is easily the best BW figure I ever owned. And the show version of him was equally stunning.
I tried to keep my BW collection down to characters who appeared in the show, so I only got Cheetor and Dinobot II from the TM2 line, and I thought they were both pretty decent. Dinobot II was the better of the pair, IMO.

I did think the Popping Armour on TM Optimal Optimus was a pretty good feature. It's a shame they never repeated that gimmick.

Forgot about Tarantulas, one of the best TF toys ever. How could I?

Glad I still have one to go with my Primal Prime. His tank mode and Waspinator's jet mode are the highlights of the vehicle modes for me in the line.

Yes, Waspinator! TM Waspinator has one of the best colour schemes in all of Transformersdom!

TM Waspinator just doesn't work for me, it's not Waspinator
Fox Kids TM Waspinator on the other hand is definitely TM Buzzsaw

TM Waspinator just doesn't work for me, it's not Waspinator I meant no offence, Phil. I merely go by the name Hasbro put on the packaging.

Where'd all the Fox Kids ones TM repaints - didn't see any normal repaints before. I'm trying to guess at what you're asking here as that sentance doesn't make sense ! Back then with smaller numbers of assortments per year and longer exposure for toys repaints weren't a necessity of life. The FK repaints were all done in late 99/early 00 to promote Fox Kids showing BW & BM. I could have sworn that the first few - the 4 standard bw dlx and TM2 Cheetor & Tarantulas - were TRU Exclusives but I can find no proof online, The remaining 4 Transmetals were sold in cases with the Beast Wars Mutants and allmade it onto TRU shelves in the UK.

From my point of view FK toys are a bit Meh. The Cheetor is a pretty good Cheetor, very similar to the original. I lilke the colours used on Dinobot. Red's not Rhinox's colour - the robot should have been a mettalicish green OR them beast shell should have been black making it a decent Ironhde. Waspinator is a disaster - shouldn't have used that grey blue.
TM Cheetor is odd as is TM Tarantulas, but at least the colours work there. Rattrap is so so, TM Rhinox introduces the TF world to the horrors of that pale blue, TM Waspinator is great and TM Airazor is a Zombie !
Back to Transmetals. Why didn't we get TM Tigatron, Black Arachnia & Lasorbeak as repaints of the TM deluxes. A TM Dinobot and Scorponok would have been great too !

Some of those FK recolours are pretty hallucinogenic.
An aside; what is everyone's favourite intermediate mode?
I did quite like Rattrap's dragster mode... it seemed to suit him. And Cheetor's was well implemented. The "Golden Rocket", as he used to say. (Long before being a Transmetal!)

Most of those repaints are amazing, which goes to show there were some bad choices first time round.
Sky-Byte is definately the best though. As I said, terrible toy, but he looks absolutely beautiful.

Man, look at how awesome that TM Tarantulas recolour is!! I seriously want him, but I've yet to see a FK repaint pop up on ebay. Are they usually expensive?

The Tarantulus one is usually expensive, since the Botcon comics depicted that recolour being ZOMBIE TARANTULUS after he was resurrected after the end of Beast Wars.

Yikes, he's £40 at the minute, which is perhaps a bit much to shell out for a sealed toy I'd be desperate to open. Thanks for the heads up though Phil, he's now on my wishlist.
