Please don't text during a film, The light drives others minds infirm. Hold steady until the end, Even if it drives you round the bend.

It was even worse than texting at the cinema, a mate sent me a link to watch it through Kodi. Not something I would normally do but after AOE I was apprehensive about going to the cinema to watch it and id probably be struggling to find someone to go with. (My best mate that I normally chat all things Transformers with and go to see the movies with now lives in Newcastle)
I couldn't make it to the end. I will go back and finish it but I might have to make it into a mini-series and watch it in 3 parts because it's tough going.
The main plot has just been revealed, I won't spoil it too much for anyone who hasn't seen it, and its a bit of a mess. Just every promising idea from TF thrown together and churned out in 3 minutes.
The final straw was Hot Rods accent which made me want to be violently sick.

Most of the last hour isn't that bad, held back by the usual Bay gubbins. A lot of the bots are indistinct and shot far too close up to make sense if what's happening. The forced human love story and the instant TRF redemption when they decide the Autobots actually aren't bad at all.
Cogman is funny. It only took Bay a decade and a million failed attempts to get it right.
I love the first movie but let's be honest, it needs most of what Bays done wiped out with a relaunch in the next 5 years. I know thats Bay supposed to be done with it but the end just screamed sequel.

I won't believe Bay is not directing the next one until it's actually in theaters. He's played this little game for four movies, now.

Valiant efforts, chaps, but I remain clueless. *aspect ratio constantly flips about* -Ralph I did see another film recently called 'It Comes at Night' which also had a fluctuating aspect ratio throughout. The difference there was that it was being done for deliberate effect for a narrative purpose rather than the utter contempt for audiences the pointless dicking about with screen size was in 'The Last Knight'. As an aside, I thought 'It Comes at Night' was an interesting failure rather than the masterpiece reputation it appears to be garnering. -Ralph

Why on Earth would a film have a constantly changing aspect ratio???

Well in 'It Comes at Night' it does serve a story purpose and the audience are meant to notice it but to say why that effect is done would spoil the story. It's a 2D film so it's not an effect for 3d.
With 'The Last Knight', that film was shot on 3D and also on IMAX cameras. Many films shot on 3D will have the aspect ratio changing at times. It's part of what makes the effect work and is not noticeable to audiences watching in 3D. What usually happens for the 2d print is that the framing of the film is standardised. An example was 'War of the Titans' in which the 2d version aspect ratio was smaller than the screen but stayed that way throughout (in the theatrical release).
Now for films shot partially in IMAX the screen size will open up when watched on such a screen for scenes and shots done on those cameras. These are noticeable but when done well not jarring. An example is 'The Dark Knight' where some establishing shots and scenes had the larger screen size but such shots and scenes were sustained so there was less of a 'jolt' when the aspect ratio stayed. For standard screens and home video versions the framing was standardised throughout.
'The Last Knight' 2D version is a pigs ear as the larger frame IMAX shots appear to be completely random, an example of which is when Wade is walking across the screen shortly after meeting the young girl in Chicago. The screen size is constantly jumping around during the scene for no apparent rhyme nor reason relating to either IMAX shot choice or what would probably be 3D effects. It's a mess and amateurish beyond belief. I do hope the home video 2d release has a standardised aspect ratio as it will look even worse on small screens! I am a bit of a film buff and try to catch a wide variety of films in various formats and I have rarely seen such a badly edited film. I couldn't believe what I was watching, especially from an experienced director and editors. Sorting out your aspect ratio is a basic skill of film making!

The aspect ratio was the same throughout when I saw it, but I did note that it was shown in 16:9, which I thought was odd for a cinema feature. What you say explains that though; it must have been cropped.

That is interesting! Does that cinema have a projectionist?
I should point out that I wanted to like The Last Knight. I took a day off work so I could get to the first 2d screening! Oh well.

I doubt it, it was a massive multiscreen Vue. It really did strike me as odd that I was watching TV ratio in a cinema, but if they were cutting the edges off to stop the annoyance you experienced I see why.
I reckon 3D would have died by now if cinemas hadn't had to pay so much to upgrade their equipment. Load of nonsense.

3D very rarely adds anything to the experience other than the odd gimmicky moment thrown in just for 3D. The only time I've felt it added something to a movie was the start of DOTM, when the camera pans across the Cybertron landscape it added motion sickness.

What happen the TF5? Guardians of the galaxy 2 was in the cinema for ages while 3 weeks & TF5 is only on 1 screen at 2200 on a sunday. Most cinema have taken it off because they need 8 screens for Spider-man.

Cineworld only show once a day at weekends at 2015 & we wonder why its down at place 7 now. War for the planet of the apes ( or "the last 3 apes films redone again where nothing happens" to give it it's correct title) that came out wasn't that before TF5 is still on.

It's for the best that Primal was not included. Going by the calibre of the current writers he would probably have been flinging shit everywhere while sticking bananas up people's bums.

That would have been... Interesting.
I imagine a single shot of him looking majestic in a broad jungle setting doing something to support the local wildlife in the prehistoric past.
Like shaking a collecting tin.
Probably dropped because it wasn't worth creating the model for one shot.

I watched it last night. Wow. That was certainly a feature length motion picture. I have nothing else to say about it.
