Today, while setting up Liz & Jonathan's new computers, I encountered the evil which is Win10 S. It's basically a version of Win 10 which will only allow you to install programs for Microsoft's app store. So no Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome, CCleaner, Vlc...... Fortunately it appears there's an easy fix support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4456067/windows-10-switch-out-of-s-mode

I'm still using Yahoo Mail, which recently informed me that I have to upgrade my browser to Chrome or Firefox because it won't work on MS browsers after 31 January. I've gone with Firefox. It has a menu bar, and it's not run by Google. Martin

We recommend the AdBlockPlus add in for removing ads and other unwanted intrusions.

We recommend the AdBlockPlus add in for removing ads and other unwanted intrusions. Remind me where I get that? Martin

Click the three lines at the top right, which produces a menu. Click Add-Ons. Click Get Add-Ons. Type AdBlock plus and press return. Click on the title adblockplus in the description. Click add to firefox

Windows updated earlier. Now the sound on the laptop is suddenly much lower and a tinnier than it was just last night! I can't figure out what happened!!! Maybe the windows update borked something???

It's likely set the sound levels to something different. Might be worth going beyond basic volume and fiddling the sound settings.

Ah. The headphone settings had changed which had somehow borked the speakers!

The phrase "updated this week" was the big give away.
I believe we established this previously during a Burns Computer crisis.

Hold the windows key on your keyboard, press r and then in the little box that opens type 'winver' and press enter.
That should pop up a box telling you which windows you have.

A box popped up saying WINDOWS 10.
That's amazing!
I hate Windows update. I was tearing my hair out last night until I figured out what sound setting had been changed!

Having some difficulty with my mother's Win10 Lenovo laptop. All fine yesterday, I started the shut down and set it to one side.
Picked it up later in the day and noticed the power light was slowly fading on and off, which I'd associate with the machine being asleep, and not shut down as I left it. So I tapped the mousepad to wake it up and nothing happened. I then pushed the power button and nothing happened. Sensing something wasn't quite right I decided to go for a hard shutdown by pressing and holding the power button down for > 20 seconds..... And nothing happened!
Any ideas?

If he battery is removable, remove it and then hold down the power button for 30 seconds or so. Then start again. If that doesn’t do it, you’ve got more of a problem

Says windows 10 has a clever feature - it doesn't shut down when you tell it too & keep the laptop still running when you think you have turned it off.

Another visit to Mum, another round of laptop problems.
This time nothing is displayed on the screen!
We know the laptop is working, I've plugged it into the TV, which the laptop identifies as a second monitor IE it believes the screen is still there.
The screen is backlighting, so we know it's getting power, it's just not showing what's happening.
Pressing the screen on/off shortcut turns the backlighting on and off.
I'm suspecting there's a loose connection or cable break inside the case, the laptop screen would occasionally go blank at times in the past.

Does anyone know where I can get a version of Windows Movie Maker to run on this thing? The in-built Photo video editor is a pain in the bum to work.

Movie maker was retired a long time ago. It isn't part of windows any more.

Indeed though parts of the web tell me I can download older versions and run them but don't want to risk downloading something dodgy. WMM was really easy to use. The in-built Photo App has a movie maker but it's not user friendly.
I just want something as easy to use as WMM that works on 10.

Having a little trouble with my win10 desktop machine.
All's fine until I go into a window, or click into a text box, with scroll bars either down the side or along the button. When I do that the window, or text box, starts jumping around all over the place.
I did think it might be the mouse, but everything else is working fine, and even if the clickwheel on it was bust I'm not sure it would account for the left/right movement.
Any ideas?
