I got Windows 10 last night & had quick look round. Don't like how recent docs is off the start menu - you get it all in full screen file manager format. Then this morning my 3usb dongle does work & it doesn't with Windows 10 because no drivers for it & cost me £30 every month to get device that does work. So be cheaper just to go back to windows 7.

The Windows 10 cinema ad is easily the most vomit inducing one since the Facebook one. It doesn't make me want the product!

There's enough bad reports to convince me that staying put is the best thing to do.
Win7 still the best version for my money. Love the recently used lists off of each start menu item.

I've upgraded my Mum's laptop to win10 overnight to test what it's like. Very annoyed to discover I can't pin programs to the left side of the start menu like you could in the preview versions. The feature in question is described here: www.howtogeek.com/197836/8-ways-to-customize-the-windows-10-start-menu/interestingly the tool tip changes when I drag it over the start button it just doesn't pin This was the killer sales pt in upgrading my home machines from Win7 that that functionality would be preserved and it appears it's been removed at the last minute :-( If anyone knows a fix lmk. In a related note the settings tab for the start menu appears to be missing from the Taskbar and Startmenu settings. Otherwise win10 looks an improvement over win8 but 7 is still the winner for me.

Basic is a programming language, not an operating system!

One thing I like about Bill is that he did a good front end & you didn't need to type code in to get the computer working. But it is all this trying to make it fancy & then it doesn't work instead of just giving us a front cover while it gets to work behind the screen. Apart from getting the blue screen of death.

Who came up with the blue screen of death - someone must have had the job to program it for this page of text to appear when something does wrong. I wonder if he has a blue plaque outside his house like they do with TV series locations.

Phil - you can pin to the right side of the start menu, just right click on the link in "All Apps".

You don't get the jump menus then.

What the frig are jump menus?
You can still add folders with shortcuts in them to the task bar (right click->toolbars->new toolbar), will this do what you want?

If you've got win7 to hand you'll see a little arrow to the rightof eacvh of your start menu pinned programs. Click on them and you get a recentlyused documents list for that program allowing you to jump straight into the file when opening the program. VERY useful

I found a youtube video that showed me how to find Windows Media Player. They should bundle fucking manuals with computers.

Ralph learnt hieroglyphics by watching Stargate SG1 reruns. It's not just a written language to him, he can speak it fluently.

So....
Mum's Win10 Laptop stopped talking to her internet. Wouldn't connect to the wireless box. I couldn't get it to do a thing on site. I could however get my iPad and her spare laptop to connect so thought "The laptop must have got damaged" and brought it back home with me to get m'learned colleagues to look at it.
I wanted to see if it would work over the ethernet cable (didn't have a spare in London) so set the laptop up, turned it on ..... and unexpectedly it found my wireless network and connected just fine.
So any ideas please as to why it won't connect to her wireless, which it has done up till now and other devices still can, yet can connect to mine!

Mine did that the other day. I reckon I'll do it eventually before the free period runs out, but I don't want it deciding for me when it's going to happen!

I wouldn't.
10 is pish.
Not as pish as 8 but still pish.
7's still the best Windows version by a country mile.
