1. I think the club lost what it, and botcon was for, a long time ago.
While giving us updates of g1 characters Hasbro would never touch is great, hasbro's been touchibg a lot of those for years. To keep up with this, FP would have to really start dipping into non-G1, which is something they've historically been extremely reluctant to do.
I had a friend, who actually had a lot of pull with the club. The two of us came up with the idea of Robots in Disguise: Season 2. We'd write it, and basically would cost the club NOTHING. This was back in the desert days when the club never could get their toys out on time, had virtually no fiction to read, and had little for members to be excited over.
We were going to use Toy Only characters like Jhiaxus, Bludgeon, and Megabolt, as well as put in some exclusive fodder they were under no obligation to produce.
But Pete refused to have anything to do with it. Vic said in a bit of desperation, Vic said we could incorporate using the upcoming Seacon set (which neither of us were enthusiastic about using), and only then did Pete show even a little bit of interest. And only then to take the idea from us uncredited and have their writers write it.
We gave up on the idea.
Later, this was repeated almost exactly with another friend and I, as we tried to develope Beast Wars Animated for them. Again, a series of self contained stories that filled out a "season." Again, Pete wanting to have nothing to do with it.
All the while Pete complained publically that the club relies on member participation and member submissions, and no one ever submitted anything. No one ever engaged the club to create content.
It was after BWA that I was completely disenfranchised with the club, and their hypocrisy.
Botcon is best for concepts hasbro would never touch.
Prebeast, continuing older "dead" franchises, SG (much as I loath it), and the like.
It's also best for new characters, which they also don't like. They'd say "No one wants new characters. No one gets excited for new characters." Well, you have to MAKE them want new characters, by writing new stories for them, by developing their characters. Which 3H would do, but FP conpletely throws away and only does the minimum effort necessary to market *anything.*
Never mind that Fractyl and Packrat were really popular, and those old original 3H characters still command pretty high dollar in the second hand market. And that FP has done at least THREE homages to them (Packrat, Shockoract, and Apelinq), all while bitching that OCs aren't popular.
Botcon lost it's way under Brian and Pete. Yeah, Hasbro is doing Botcon type exclusives now with the G2 sets, but only because this is the kind of stuff Botcon has come to. Botcon is stepping on Hasbro's toes, not the other way around.
I love Ultra Mammoth so much, because that's exactly the sort of thing Botcon gave us pre-FP, and tge exact sort of thing that made botcon exclusives so great.
Who in their right minds really wanted a DotM Megatron from TFP Breakdown?
2. Isn't this conversation inappropriate for this thread? Better for it's own, or for one of the other FP threads? This is basically a wishlist thread.
