More Rock Lord fun this morning! Pulling together four cheapo ebay auctions, I now have a complete Brimstone and a complete Pulver-Eyes! Brimstone is awesomeness. I ended up with two from multi-figure auctions, but this one has very little of his gold waist rubbed off. I can see from the transformation though that he needs a fair bit of care to stop that happening. Tight, clean and bright though. Nice figure. Shame his face isn't hidden in rock mode. Pulver-Eyes though... this one's a bit loose at the shoulder joints and proportionally he isn't a great figure. Bit of a thunder-thighs. Still, two wave two basics added! As a side effect of the above purchases, I ended up with another Granite. I remember Blue telling me at TFN the one I bought from Toy-Fu was the Japanese one? (with gun below). This one has a much lighter face. They're both in great condition and I can't decide which I prefer. I really like the bright blue face. It's hard to show the difference in a photo, it's more vivid in hand.

Oh brill! Yeah finding a Brimstone with a gold waist is tricky due to the transformation being designed to scrape paint off. Good find on a Pulver-eyes, he's one of the harder series 1/2 to find.
Yeah, you got the Japanese Granite at TFN. I really like him in comparison to the Western release!

Regular readers will know that when it comes to sealed toys, I have something of a problem opening them. Recently, I acquired two sealed Rock Lords on the cheap from Transformerland.com (America really doesn't rate these figures does it!?), with every intention of opening them because I've never experienced what these toys feel like new. Now they have arrived however, the MISB curse looms large behind me every time I pick them up, after all, these aren't just regular purchases you can make in TRU, these are figures that have remained sealed for the last 30 YEARS. So, do I open them... Do I have the right? I promise faithfully to abide by the decision of the Hub mind!

At TFN, the brave Kapow men opened a MISB Boulder as they really wanted a complete one!

As an answer, I'd say if you want to, go for it. Those two aren't tricky to come by, but at the same time, the carded figures aren't hugely expensive when compared to other 80s carded figures.
(I would absolutely say yes to opening a Slimestone and Nuggit MOSC as those two are impossible to find mint loose due to their 100% chrome coverings)

That's also why they cost a lot more on card too!
I'm also thinking these aren't particularly nice cards. Sticker residue, biro marks. They aren't something you'd want to display. I got the Boulder for the same reason as the men of Kapow. The one I got from you started me off on this, and he's one of my faves, so I wanted a good one with a gun.

I say open. If there's no real attachment to having sealed ones, then get them out to play with.
I have a sealed Brimstone, as that was my first Rock Lord, and a sealed Sticks n Stones as I like the figure [and have the Japanese one to play with].

In this case I would say take lots of nice pictures of them in packaging and then open them.

Standby to be amazed... but I've actually voted 'No, don't open them'.
It was the "sealed for 30 years" bit that got me. Sealed for 30 years?!?!?!
SEALED FOR 30 YEARS?!?!?!
But, then I read that the cards themselves weren't all that good?
I s'pose, IF the figures are easy to come by loose and in good condition, DON'T OPEN. But IF the cards aren't all that displayable, then open the rocky goodness and feel it press against your flesh....

And also much more sensibly argued than I thought it would be!

You've had enough from me already this week!
I've spotted a problem with this poll. If it's a draw, that means I can't open them OR leave them sealed, which is the kind of logical conundrum that causes universes to implode.

I kind of want a sealed Sticknstones just on the off chance Im ever (again, curse my lack of planning) in the position of getting Peter Cullen and frank Welkers autographs. But the sticker that took some of the package print with it does spoil what otherwise looks like a fairly nice card.
Then again I kind of like sealed items with a bit of wear on them in the same way you want a hundred year old piece of furniture to look a hundred years old, otherwise you might as well just get something new from Ikea.
But if Bouder was antique furniture it would be too far gone to even bother trying to restore. All you can do is salvage the good bits and turn them into a lamp or fancy doorstop.

Also Transformersland sometimes just has insanely low prices on stuff for unclear reasons.

I've had some good stuff from them cheap in the past but their general prices have risen in the last year or so. I like the way they always mark packages as 'used toys' at $10 value so there's never any customs charges.

Looks like opening it is! 3-2. This will be done. I'm impressed, I thought the response would be, "Get on with it, they're only Rock Lords". Well reasoned, chums! I don't think these are quite rare enough to worry about too much, and the cards aren't in great nick.

But would he be any use without his mates?
Hmmmm...

The main man! But would he be any use without his mates? Hmmmm... Well no, he'd just be a head. If you're aiming to get the full set, complete and nicely boxed, that will run you about 10x that though. If you just want a Jawbone then, I think around £25 is probably reasonable. You don't really see them separate that often, as they were only sold in the boxset. (of course the other thing about Fossilsaurus and the guys within is they're sometimes listed as very strange things, so half the problem is finding them, but on the flipside it's possible to get a crazy bargain if you're really lucky. I spent 6 months just waiting to see a set to buy pop up!) Fully boxed and complete sets tend to go for £250-£300. I saw one boxed set go recently for around £150, though it was trashed and missing/broken bits (and as it's mostly sold as a set, good luck in finding individual pieces) I've seen two loose sets of JUST the guys, no accessories or weapons go for around £70-80 (though in my mind he really does need the armour and guns!) So I'd say £25 is reasonable if it's just him you want, if you have aims to get the full set with all accessories, it's not worth it.

My rocky ambitions aren't that lofty at the moment. Maybe one day. I'm having fun trying to compile the basics as they're reasonably cheap for what they are, but once you get into Shock Rocks and Jewel Lords the prices start to go up. I do love em though. My current self-set target is to get the basics, the Rockasaurs and the two vehicles, although the Rock Pot seems a rarity.
This weekend I am going to open Sticks N Stones!

Oh man, I've still not found a Rock Pot!
It's not impossible to get the Jewel Lords at a good price, but be prepared to do a lot of waiting and searching. But that's half the fun!!!

Woah, if you don't have a rock pot I've got no chance. Why are they so rare?
One of the jewel lords went for £25 today with weapon in an auction along with a spike stone.

Oh damn someone got a bargain!!! The Rock Pot is rare as it looks nothing like a rock lords product meaning finding an auction is impossible unless the seller knows what they have. I'm pretty sure they were made in equal quantities to Stone Wing but stone wing is clearly a rock vehicle

Mr Bluehift sir, what's the difference between Rock Lords marked Bandai Japan and Bandai Macau? I've opened up Boulder, and after marveling at the tightness of the joints, I've realised his plastic quality isn't quite as solid as the other Boulder I have, which is marked Macau. This one is marked Japan. I remember you pointing out the matt and gloss finishes on different Tombstones at TFN - is one source noted to be better than the other?

Boulder is out! I'll give the 1980s credit for one thing here, the glue holding that blister on is just as strong now as it was back then. None of this 'we have to use sellotape or they'll fall off' nonsense like today, or those TMNT figures I bought that opened themselves, this was stuck on for good!
Feels very odd to be transforming a toy that has waited 30 years for the chance. The joints are so tight I had to work a couple in to get the rock to form right! I also didn't realise that Boulder actually has springs in his legs to push them open when in robo, er, human? mode. The other one I have is a bit... looser in that respect.
That was so exciting I may have to wait a bit to do Sticks N Stones!
