I cut back on Lego for the same reason. I realised that of the sets I've bought new I've only opened maybe half, I've got three star Wars sets I bought well over a year ago and another almost as old. The Pirate of the Caribbean set I bought this week was the first since the Star Wars Advent Calendar in November, which I also haven't fully opened.
As most were bought only for the minifigures I haven't had the urge to build the sets. And at this point a few are worth more than I paid so if I can convince myself I don't need Lego Ewoks they may go on ebay.

Looks at pile of 9 unopened deluxes. Ooops. With me it's partly time, and partly the misb/moc trap. I fell into this with the Doctor Who figures because the clamshell packaging means that once they're open, they're open, they can't be put back in the box. It's not that I'm trying to retain the value because I doubt I'll ever sell them, but once you start down that line it's incredibly hard to stop it. If only my pile of shame was just 9 unopened deluxes. I reckon I've got about 25 boxed unopened Transformers sat behind me. Part of me says 'play! now! toys!' and part of me says 'moc! dust! space!' Thing is, if any of these are damaged I'm stuffed for replacing them. That happened with the Enemies of the Third Doctor box set for me. I noticed recently that the Omega in it has two left hands, but I've no hope of replacing that now.

I always open everything always. The most things may have to wait is a day. But I don't think I get as much actual stuff as many of my other Cyber Chumbs. I also get a lot of my Marvel and Star Wars figures loose.
Free them!!!! Free them from their prisons!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only MISB/MOSC I have are a couple of various Prowls, which I also have out as well. For The Collection. And a couple of figures I got to sell on at a later date, investment wise, but not much.

Amusingly, the biggest incentive for me to keep them boxed is that if I open them, I will inevitably start playing with them and spark the question from my wife, "When did you get that honey?" To which I have to reply, "Ohh this? Had it for ages. Was gonna sell it in the box but fancied opening it and have a fiddle instead." The alternate answer is, "This? this has been out on that shelf for ages..." The sole reason my Metroplex sits in his box right now is that if I open it, there's no way I can blag that it's 'always been on that shelf'. Gutted...

Wow, there must have been a pretty impressive sleight of hand to get your last order in under the radar then! That lot must have come in a pretty big box! My missus can recognise a Forbidden Planet Dalek at fifty paces these days. Didn't help either that today's order arrived in a Hasbro transformers shipping carton.

Obviously, if she ever cottons on or sees an order I've made and left open on my laptop, the reason I get it delivered to my work address is that there's always someone there to sign for it.
Obviously.

The Clearout Paradox
No, not the one where you clearout a load of stuff but end up with more by the end than you had at the start.
I've discovered that my recent decision to start paring down my collection has had an unexpected side-effect. (In essence I am going through the collection and asking myself "Have I had this out on display in the last two years? If not, what is the point of having it?" Mostly I'm finding that the answer to the second question is quite often "dunno, just kinda do". And things like that I am in the process of placing in the "move on" piles of one description or another.)
What I am finding is that it makes me appreciate the portion of my TF collection that I am going to be keeping a lot more. For example, knowing that I have pondered, considered and decided that of my Jazz toys it is reissue Jazz that will stay and RTS Jazz which will go has made me appreciate Re-Jazz more - because I know that I had options and he is the version I have decided to keep.
Anyone else had this experience where parting with some things actually makes you appreciate what you retain more?

Indeed.
Thankfully I've only evee had to clearout for good reasons, 'cos I wanted to, and I know exactly what you mean, Karlos. I've been steadily reducing my various collections for years. I realised I had boxes of stuff I just never looked at anymore. Also, I realised that it's ok to move stuff on, you enjoyed it at the time, but now you're collecting has changed, and it's time to find it a new home. The result has been that I do indeed get far more out of the things I've kept.
It also keeps the Mrs happy....

I'm almost certainly going to do a big TF clearout (and likely MOTU Classics, Doctor Who books, etc). In the past I've gotten read of bits here and there but my collection is growing and growing as I buy more Ark crew characters, more MTMTE characters, more Fembots, etc. I am now living with a MASSIVE collection of stuff that I have no space or need for. (Serious point) I've also gone through a few things lately that are making me re-evaluate a fair few things in life (serious point over.
So I think I am going to get rid of almost all of my TFs, but wouldn't mind keeping a small number to represent my many years collecting the line.
I know there are a few clearout threads on here. Can anyone suggest any criteria they may have followed in their own clearouts? FYI: except for a shelf-full of Lost Light crew for a couple of weeks last summer and Generations Arcee by my desk nothing has been on display for literally years.

Firstly, all Rock Lords go to me! Seriously though, I've had quite a few clearouts in the past. Anything that has spent the last year or so in a box is fair game. Anything without any sort of personal connection or that I've forgotten I own is fair game. Anything that's part of a set where I don't own the full set is fair game.

Something like that has to be personal and what feels right to you. If I was doing that I'd be inclined to cut entire sets, say, my Beast Wars or Armada toys haven't seen the light of day for years, so they might as well all go. But equally you might want to pick cherished figures from a range of lines and cut the rest so you have a handful of representatives of different ranges.
I don't think there's an answer anyone can give you, it would have to be what feels right to you. Being me, and if time permits, I'd also make the decision and sit on it for a bit to see if it still feels right a few weeks later.

Can I get first dibs on your MOTU Classics please? As for the rest I can't help you, I've only been collecting for about 11 months so haven't reached the stage where a clearout is needed but I'm rapidly approaching the stage where some stuff might need to go into boxes for a bit.

When I started my big clearout my first port of call was figures that were still boxed or in the cupboard. If they've been left there I have no interest in them. I then went looking at what was left out on display and what I liked and wanted to keep and was pretty harsh. Most of the Transformers toys I bought, I bought out of habit or seeing on the shelf and going - ooh that looks nice.
As Pinwig says though, it will generally end up being what feels right to you.
If you do plan on getting rid of a lot do let Nick or Bogatan know as it may be of value to Toy-Fu.

My advice would be if there's anything you're not sure about selling that might be worth something then hang onto it.
I've sold stuff, regretted it and found some things impossible to replace now at a decent price. BW Metals Ravage. Dinobots. Headmasters. BW II Seacons. Brave Max, but I got lucky getting them back.
If you're selling privately get the money in advance, even from people you know. I got stiffed by someone I knew in the pre wedding sale!

My take on it is probably a bit more drastic than that of others. I'm in the process of working through and asking myself what is the over-riding reason why I shouldn't_ get rid of something. For example, my 84 Skywarp is staying because he is one of the survivors of my original collection. Generations Jazz meanwhile will be going because he offers me nothing that reissue Jazz doesn't, BWII BB & Starscrem are just the survivors of three different versions of the same mould, and whilst I've enjoyed owning them I don't feel an over-riding attachment.
Basically I've taken the view that things will go unless there is an over-riding reason to keep them. Part of the reason I am looking at it with such ruthlessness is that I've realised that the volume of stuff I have crammed into boxes and wardrobes in this house is actually feeling quite oppressive, and also means I have a huge volume of stuff that I will never likely have on display, and that personally isn't for me anymore. Better things go to a good home who appreciates them than sit unloved in a box in my house. At least, that's the way I'm looking at it.

A general rule of thumb is that when you go into a box you have not opened for quite some time and see a thing inside which does not give you the reaction of 'Nice to see that again!' then it goes. There is also the practical issue of having X space to fit Y things in. I have noticed myself that piles of things are getting out of hand again so I will have to have another cull when time allows at some point in the summer.

Nick walked out the door with 3 boxes of stuff yesterday. FOC, Botshots, Movie. I houghtthere was some Prime but he may have had those previously.
The problem for me is that the storage space in the loft is increasingly inaccessible and I can't get any more in the house.
There's a cupboard above the stairs with all my G1, Micromasters and LARGE toys in. Above the wardrobe are 5 crates of BW, RiD (original) and Generations. There's two crates of CW with more on display round the room.
The problem is is there is genuinely no room for the new Max in the above the stairs cupboard!

I am about to cycle some things and relegate more stuff to the loft. It's not that I don't want to keep the TF:Prime stuff out, I just don't have room for it and Titans. The same as Animated had to go away to make room for Prime. Clearing stuff out wise, the first time I did it, I went pretty much cold turkey and got rid of everything I had except reissue G1's and a few Galaxy Force toys. I have since repurchased what I could afford, and kissed goodbye to the rarer stuff I had, never to be reclaimed.
I am now in the process of boxing up more stuff for rehoming, he criteria here was simple. It's all 3rd party, and was there an adequate TT/Hasbro release of it?

Having established previously that Phil does not need Earthrise Op we turn our attention to previous versions of the recently commandered Ultra Magnus. So does Phil need to keep the following: * Siege Ultra Magnus - I have the Netflix version of the mould * Kingdom Ultra Magnus - I have the SG/Powered Convoy version of the mould * Legends CW red thighs Ultra Magnus with Alpha Trion - I have the white thighed MTMTE version with Minimus Ambus and at least two other Alpha Trions * Siege Galaxy Force Optimus: I have the original which is miles better, and I have the Nova Prime tweaked version of the mould. But I am aware of a Cybertron Capsule coming A larger Siege conversation may also bee necessary....
