Flogged a load of mine when I got hitched. Paid for the wedding it did.
Then been cutting down what I've got on similar lines to you recently. I want a BW set, and I'm working on that. The only other things I really want to hang on to are Micromasters, RID, a set of Minicons, a few select A/E/C figures and the classics.

Yeah, I purged my collection, not for financial reasons but simply because I disliked having so many (approx. 100, without any clear theme to them) and knew I would get more pleasure from a smaller, more streamlined collection. First I got rid of all my post-1986 TFs (Pointblank, Cloudburst, Pincher, Quickswitch, PM Prime, Chase, Freeway, Cyclonus, Scourge, Springer, Hot Rod, Quake, Nautilator, etc.), then much later I ditched my Special Teams, Dinobots, 1986 Mini-Autobots, 1986 Spy Cassettes and Metroplex, so now I just have a manageable 55 TFs, all from 1984-5.

The only thing I couldn't stand having was Armada/Energon/Cybertron. Bleh. Oh yeah - and Alternators/Binaltech bleh too (way too skiny robot parts).
But other than the trilogy, I'm pretty much a completist at heart.

well - the key word here is "at heart."
At the moment, the lines which I am most in love with and therefore have are the Japanese Beast Wars (II and Neo), Generation 1 Encore/TFC/Hasbro Commemorative and Animated.
Beyond this - I'm not very interested in anything. Possibly having all of the season 1 Beast Wars figures - but the Transmetals I can do without.

It's not so much that I'm a completist so much as once I buy something I don't want to sell it it. Barring dire financial crisis I couldn't part with my childhood toys, which is anything bought before 1996. Even then most stuff up to about 2000 has sentimental value as most of my collection was bought during family holidays and the like. Since then its more of a mixed bag.
A few months back I sold Energon Jetfire and Ironhide? which were the first Transformers I bought from a shop to add to my collection then went on to sell.
I'd like to scale my collection back, but I know is not going to get down to a manageable level, so I just have to except that until I get my own place (still aiming for before 30) its going to remain boxed up filling up my room.

Same here. They have to be in storage for now, but that way, when I do get them out it's nice to rediscover them. I can't imagine getting rid of any Transformers. I tend to be of the mind, you can't have too many Transformers, only too little space! To that end, I do intend having a purge of other things. My Transformers collection is now so big that I can't see me having the space to display much else, so when I get the time I will be clearing out some of the things I've collected in the last ten years or so. The first things to go will likely be those that I liked as a child but never actually collected and have bought since - Turtles, original He-Man (I'll be keeping my 2002 toys as I have pretty much a complete set), Manta Force. I'll probably thin out my Action Force. Star Wars might be scaled down at some point, but there are others that'll go first.

I've pretty much given up buying toys at the moment due to lack of space. There have been some toys I've seen in FP and on the internet but I have resisted buying them. Like most people here I think that the less toys you have the more you appreciate them.

I have very much reached the point at which I feel that the number of toys I have is restricting the enjoyment I actually get out of them. Therefore I am in the process of a mighty purge - but then it isn't just related to toys. Books I never read, VHS tapes I have no further use for, DVD's I don't watch, comics that are just sitting in a box... all of these things are being overhauled and slimmed down. It does feel quite good to have less stuff in the house. I find that I feel less constricted that way. I am being pickier in what I buy as well - not so much that I am specifically focusing my collection on any one line or era , but that I am cranking up the bar in terms of what I expect from a toy. So although the Animated Deluxes are something I have been acquiring the majority off, I haven't bought most of the larger toys from the line. Likewise, a lot of the current wave of Universe seem quite nice but I'm going to skip over them and let them go by I think.
Actually, this reminds me that I need to go back and have another look in the boxes for a final pass over the collection to check I have it down to where I want it to be.

I'm actually pondering whether to reduce my Transformers collection to zero...
Have I gone crazy? Do I need sleep? Will I regret this in the future?

I don't think it's unwise to have a reduction every now and then, clear out some stuff, but not to zero. DEAR GOD MAN, NOT TO ZERO!
I've been recently thinking about a reduction, as I have lots of stuff I don't use/display/fight/want anymore.

Well...my reduction phase is over. My collection has been reduced to only G1 reissues. I thought that would satisfy me... but.. oh well.. Maybe I just need to go work out and eat some chinese food? Also...what would I do with the money? Just drink it away or spend it on some girl. Neither is worth it Pete

I've thought the unthinkable on several occassions. I've also considered reducing my Transformers collection down to zero once. In the end I think it comes down to the question of whether owning them gives you pleasure, if it does then there is no sense in disposing of them needlessly. If you don't get any pleasure out of owning them then there is, likewise, little value to keeping them. I sometimes come across things - transformers, other mecha toys, books, video games, DVD's, videotapes - that I no longer get any enjoyment from. In that case they are culled ruthlessly from the herd. Conversely, if they do still give me pleasure then I keep them. Unless I have no space for them, in which case I resign myself to the fact that they may have to go. I'd agree with Shockprowl though, a clearout every so often can be a good thing in moderation. It encourages a collection to evolve after all. Also...what would I do with the money? Just drink it away or spend it on some girl. Neither is worth it Pete Depends on the girl surely? I'm fairly sure there are one or two of them out there that would be worthy of it........ Karl

Having cleared out once before, several years ago admittedly... I now regret it muchly. Perhaps just putting them in storage is a way forward and focusing on somethign else for a while

I do prune from time to time.
Anything post-1995 is pretty much a semi-permanent fixture, since it's rare that there's a "character" attached to any one.

I think it's wise to have a cull from time to time, for space and also to make sure what you're keeping is what you really want. I tend to have a big cull once a year and the odd smaller clear-out from time to time.

I think it would be impossible to reduce my collection to absolute zero as there'd always be something left in some box or other. Maybe a nuclear detonation would do it.
I've never considered it, in fact the only TF toy I've ever gotten rid off is a broken G1 Megatron (binned him). I'm a terrible hoarder but have been able to curb my hoarding instincts (or at least avoid them) by buying less shite to begin with.

I'm still thinking about selling them all off in spite of not thinking about it either way for the last two weeks - or however long its' been since writing in this thread. I basically put the idea on the shelf to let it be chewed over for a while...
And now, as I go back to the idea, my heart is saying:
Pete only like Macross, Gurren Lagann and Gundam models enough to actually have some of those.
I'm sadly finding there's no place in my heart for Transformers...
at all...
so...
that said...
I shall be putting the whole lot up for sale in the Stock Exchange thread shortly.

1000 + ?!!! Blimey!
I've never approached 4 figures in just TFs, all together I'd wager my toys used to number in the 4 figures. But yes yes, several purges later feeling really good about my collection. Not just TFs, Marvel, Action Force, all sorts going. My collecting is far more structured, my tastes having, well, matured I suppose. Even when a collection takes a massive jump forward, such as my modern Star Wars collection recently, it's always with a clear plan in mind. Less is more people!

Seyla! I am very much in that camp. Well done at getting thy collection so well trimmed Ralph. My own Reaving has stalled a little recently whilst I make arrangements for the disposition of the stuff which is to go. But I have a feeling that there will be another disposal pass before this year is out. Karl

I don't think that is strange at all. I am in much the same boat in many of my interests. I still love Transformers, and get a lot out of the toys but like yourself don't feel the need to own them all - or even necessarily retain everything I have ever owned. Likewise with Macross and Mospeada mecha - I still love them dearly but I have no burning desire to own all of the toys, model kits and whatnot that are available. Indeed, the new YF-19 may actually turn out to be a capstone piece for my Macross collection and I'd not had any burning acquisition desires past that before I became unwell and haven't had any sense of that changing since.
I think it represents less a diminution of interest in our hobbies and more of a change in the way we relate to them. Or possibly I am talking epic cobblers, that is possible as well.

I'm not that keen on reducing my collection, but as I'm sharing my life with someone else now I'm trying to be pragmatic and reduce the sheer volume of space my collection takes up.
In all honesty I've always felt the TFCC/Botcon stuff was a little detached from my regular collection and therefore its that part of my collection that I've been purging (along with the odd toy I have more than one of and a few Binaltechs I've realised I've never particularly appreciated).
I suspect I'll always have a large TF collection, but right now its shrinking...

I just realised one day that I had so much stuff, again not just TFs, but alot of it TFs, in boxes in the loft THAT I NEVER USED/PLAYED WITH! So, time to move it on. It feels so good! Just to have the collections I play with/display (in what very limited space I'm allowed by Mrs Shockprowl) and care about.
