I'm pretty sure Galileo was put on trial for breaking an agreement not to teach the (at the time) largely unsubstantiated heliocentric model of the solar system. And for being a dick about his former pupil who was now the Pope.
That he was put on trial/convicted of heresy is only a myth from the Victorian era that sadly continues to be propagated today, mainly to inflame unnecessary tensions between science and religion.
For this crime of crimes I must now change my vote here to... GUILTY.
