Apparently this is being announced today (NX might not be the final name but that's what they're using at the moment).
I hope it's a giant robot spider.

If it's being termed NX now it had better be called The Nintendo Excelsior or they'll be trouble!

Ah. Ok, so they are staking their claim to the "take your gaming everywhere with you" ground. Actually, not a bad move, it is something no-one else is doing and is the sort of platform where they can leverage their more "casual gamer" friendly design expertise quite effectively but also make a play for the living-room space as well. If they can make it work that seamlessly in real-life I can see a lot of people going for it.
(now, give us a Dynasty Warriors:Gundam, a Macross Game or a Godzilla beat-em-up on that, Nintendo, and you might even get me interested).

Colour me interested, but it will live or die on the battery life! If the entire console is in the handheld, how much battery power will rendering all that take (unless removing it from the dock allows for a lower-cpu intensive mode)

That seems to be the optimistic theory. Its going to be about games for me. I bought the Wii U almost straight away but never got in to the habit of using like I did the Wii because the few games to interest me were spread so thinly.

It genuinely took me a year to realise that the Wii U wasn't just a new controller for the Wii

Interesting concept. I note they're using adults to promote it rather than kids.

A wise move. If Nintendo hope to recover from the Wii U disaster, they need to target a new audience. We also have to consider the price. A 20-something audience will pay £350 at launch, but many parents will go for a cheap Android device for their child instead.
Given Nintendo's child-friendly reputation and the fact that children ngravitate to portable devices that don't use the main TV, I expect a lot of young children will find it under the Christmas tree in 2017, irrespective of whether Nintendo promotes it to them or not.
I can't believe Nintendo have trademarked 'Joy-Cons' as the name of the detachable mini-controllers.

I am confused. Is this a handheld Gameboy type thing that also plugs into TV's? I couldn't hack more than 30 seconds of that awful music before I had to hit the off button!

It's a console/handheld hybrid. Two controllers either side of the screen, which are removed when it is placed in a bigger dock, so you can hook it up to a big tv.
This could be tempting...a half decent Mario Kart and I could see myself getting this.

It's a tablet that plugs into your TV via a base unit. Its unique feature is the controller, which can be used in various configurations (standard game controller, tablet handlebars and as two mini controllers). It has a proprietary cartridge slot and supports SD cards (allegedly a SDHC slot, which would limit you to 32GB of storage). Details of the base station functionality and online services are a bit vague at the moment.

I'll nab one at launch if it's cheap enough [around £200 would be nice]. Especially if Zelda Breath of the Wild is a launch title.

Fingers crossed that will be the price point. Andy Nah, I bet it'll be £249 at the very least, probably around the £300 mark.

For the market they're after they will need to compete with the PS4 slim, which is £220.

The market, at least part of it, will be 3DS owners being convinced to upgrade to a more powerful portable system and some of those aren't much under £200 even now. So I'm guessing £250-300.
I do think this will be the first Nintendo were I wont get it asap. I'll wait till theres a least a few games I know I'll play regularly, by which time hopefully the price might have come down a little, or at least better bundle offers will be available and I can pick one of the randomly coloured versions that always show up after I've gotten the standard boring one.

Nothing official yet, that could've been a bundle price or just Tesco messing around.
Earlier "reports" [read: speculation] on reddit were saying $299 basic unit, $399 bundles, which is similar to the WiiU. I'd prefer the Gamecube's £130 or Wii's £180 launch tag, but I'm sure the devalued £££ will make the price worse.

Personally I'd prefer just a cheaper unit without the dock that just plugs into the TV, but still excited. Unfortunately by Wii / PS3 / PC unplayed library is still way too big. But then again, this Zelda does look incredible.
