The episode of Top Of The Pops that was on the day TFUK 1 was published is repeated this Friday on BBC4 at 19:30 and Saturday at 01:00 & 23.55 www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b097xsnwTonight! Actually looking at the 1984 list we're quite fortunate to be able to see this one: the one before is Tree'd and the one after is Smiffed, so neither can be shown!

Tree'd? Smiffed?
Is this a disgraced presenters thing?

Tree'd yes, as in Yewtree.
Smiff'd .... Mike Smith refused to sign the consent forms for TOTP repeats some years ago. He then died and his widow, Sarah Greene, won't sign them on his behalf. Unfortunately this has created some confusion with those whose shows are banned "for other reasons" which seems to the opposite of his original intent!

WHAT.
Really? Did he give a reason for not wanting his shows repeated? that seems weird as it'd be free money for him surely?

Didn't want to be associated with those that were bad 'uns?

|
|
Post by Philip Ayres on Oct 13, 2017 19:39:23 GMT
That would appear to be the reason!

But... But... That sullies the good name of TOTP altogether! Like we should be ashamed of one of Britain's great musical institutions!
Not all the presenters were paedos! (Only most).

WHAT. But TOTP was always on Thursday. <checks> Huh, right, so the first four issues of Transformers are dated Thursday and there's a 17 day gap between 4 and 5 to shift the publication date to Saturday. I've never noticed that. WHAT. Another secret jump in time! It's the Eleven Day Empire all over again! -Ralph

Absolutely cracking show this week www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b099tcd1/top-of-the-pops-041019844th October 1984 We get a Judge Death T-Shirt, Paul McCartney's best solo effort, some Dave Gilmour guitar in an odd place and one of Freddie's best solo singles. This is proper pop music that I remember when I was younger. I enjoyed it last night ..... and then discovered they'd cut the best 3 songs from the 7:30 showing which usually needs to fit 30 mins. Thankfully restored for the late night one.

I shall have this on in bed after Discovery. I've been on a real 80s kick since going to that festival in the summer. Bought loads of Human League, Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones.

Watched the 40 minute version with the missus last night. Putting dates on these things always intrigues me. I bought No More Lonely Nights on seven inch single (still have it), but summer '84 was when I heard Two Minutes to Midnight and my love affair with heavy metal began. I stopped buying 'pop' soon after that, so lonely nights must have been one of the last seven inch chart pop singles I bought. It's weird to think Transformers was kicking off at the same time. And we were in that gap between Twin Dilemma and Attack of the Cybermen.
Gosh. Transformers didn't exist until Colin Baker was the Doctor. That doesn't seem possible.

Top show wasn't it? Did you spot the Judge Death T-Shirt and Dave Gilmour guitar?
Big Hits 1980, 1981, 1982 & 1983 are all currently on the iPlayer and well worth a watch.

I spotted the Judge Death shirt, but not the Gilmour. I've realised by looking that the TOTP repeats are on iplayer back to July, so I shall be watching them all. There must be a Maiden appearance in there from August when Two Minutes to Midnight came out.
That Adam Ant performance was a bit mental. I wonder when it was he lost his ants.

Oh my god. That is just amazing. I'd assumed being guitar it was McCartney, but no, that is totally Gilmour!
It's like a veil has been lifted.

Is it the 18/10 edition this week? Julian Lennon! What happened to him? Rocking out to Meatloaf at the moment.
Oh Ultravox. What a band. Love's Great Adventure would be in my top five pop anthems of the 80s.

Yup 18/10
Got a 12 inch version of Love's Great Adventure here which does the entire song as an instrumental and the again with the vocals!
And if I hear right, that,s a bit of the 12 inch version of Electric Drams playing over the DJ bits - subtly different to the 7inch version.
No More Lonely Nights video snipped from the earlier showing, should be in the late night repeat.

Weird watching Wham now. You know I always used to think Andrew Ridgeley was a dead ringer for Sylvester Stallone.

Nik Kershaw tonight. Brilliant. Not sure why he needed the guitar though. Good to see Maiden in the chart.

Oh F***
When the BBC decided they couldn't take the scissors to the 84 edition with Glitter in and instead skipped it I thought we'd dodged the F***ing Frog song.
No such luck. F***ing f***ing s#!+3

Doing this by iPlayer I'm losing track of which one was actually on the telly tonight. Slade's All Join Hands is ten times better than the usual Christmas track.

Big Hits 81 repeated again tonight, in the lead up to them doing Story of and Big Hits 85 on Jan 5th.
I presume the remaining, Christmas, 84 episodes have been scheduled for the Christmas Holiday!

Ooh thats a coincidence. I've got big hits 1981 on now, but only because it's been on iPlayer for ages and as you say, no new old shows at the moment.
