And for the second year in a row my best guess at when it will be for early holiday booking was off by a week! Hopefully will be fairly easy to change with new folk in charge at work who are considerably less cunty that the bugger who's made such trouble in the past.

Fingers crossed that they new bunch are more considerate. I shouldn't have too much difficulty - 30hr contract means that I only absolutely need the monday off (I'd like the Thursday, but if all else fails I can just donder over after work and still get to the Hilton at 7ish) and at the moment I'm swimming in holiday because I am saving it for whenever I end up moving. My boss is pretty good though, so I shouldn't have too much of an issue getting the time. *crosses digits*
And Phil, I agree with the whole eyestrain thing - I thought it was just me who was getting them though. (Those are not that far removed from what 3D films look like to me, in case anyone was wondering).

It's a deliberate choice to do those (mine I should add) and don't worry there will be more elegant images going forward.

Thanks. Last year when we did the reboot thing - it went a bit binary and digital and I thought rather than go that route, perhaps go back and do a more analogue inspired way, so a combination of test screens and vhs interference.
Just trying to keep things fresh and mix it up a little.

Nice. I'm impressed that ticket prices are staying at this years level - that is a really good rate, all things considered. When you consider the amount, and variety that TFN manages in terms of a program it is really rather good value for money.

That was a dark and mysterious couple of hours! I do feel sorry for the TFN peeps, their job is made so much more difficult by everyone who wants a Hilton room needing to be there dead on 12 in such numbers as to destroy the internet.
I have officially booked a twin room from Friday to Monday morning as that was the only option left, and was originally going to cut the cost by sharing with another friend who is likely to only show up for the one night. But, two people who actually needed the double room but had only been able to get two singles on Friday and Saturday have agreed to swap for those days as it works out cheaper for all of us (£140 for two nights rather than £160 for me, £160 for them rather than £280). For me it'll just be a pain having to move to a twin room on the Sunday (though I may pump for a single at the advance discount rate instead) and working out exactly who owes who what as we all pay.
No Stan Bush for me in the end, I thought it'd be fairer to let the people who really love his stuff have the space. I like his two TFTM songs, but even having seen Bloodsport last weekend (long story. But every song in that film sounded like a Stan Bush song even though he only did the one for it!) I don't think I could cope with the full Bush.
Still, with all that sorted for now, I can collapse in a mildly contented heap.

I haven't dared try yet, Hilton have forced a pretty annoying policy on them this year regards booking a family room and I just don't have time to sot on hold for 3 hours to book the room right now

Welp. I have got weekend tickets booked for the convention, and I booked for the concert... unfortunately it seems that the Hilton is entirely sold out for that weekend. As in, no rooms are not available - as Kate would say - "For love nor mon-ey".
I am pondering whether to get a hotel out at the airport - which might be feasible. Or whether to simply stage from home as I did for a lot of last year. Trains run from Birmimgham International to here till around 11ish, and even getting a taxi from the station to here it would only work out at £26 a day - vastly cheaper than a Hilton room... Either may be an option...
Wasn't going to be online at High Noon exactly to faff about - seeing as my sister was up to see my new home and things today. Family is more important than plastic robots.

Worth keeping an eye on the website Karl, I remember in previous years more rooms appearing later as people cancelled/more got added to the block. It is a pain that it's not in the city centre anymore, restricting the number of nearby hotels

Aha - found a room at the Ibis at Birmingham Airport for £270 for the four nights. Only a short ride on the Robot Train (or Travel Tube if you are an old Moonbase Alpha veteran...when we _had_ a moon of course...), and does breakfast and things. Yeah, that'll work. And they do free cancellation right up to the 14th of August - so worst comes to the worst I just cancel it if my plans change.
Also, it is near to the aeroplanes - a win in my book!
Sorted!

It is a pain that it's not in the city centre anymore, restricting the number of nearby hotels I will keep an eye on it definitely - as it stands the entire hotel is showing as booked for that entire period on the Hilton's own website! But yeah, I shall keep an I/BA/LL pod peeled. :-) Karl

The frustrating thing is that there are actually loads of hotels nearby. Probably nearly as many as where near the Holiday Inn. And like the Holiday Inn, The Hilton is about the midprice range.
The problem is that when the NEC closes trying to get past it or across the train lines to where most of the other hotels are becomes much longer and more difficult. Its a maze of winding roads with all the shortest routes shut off.
If they haven't already TFN could really do with sorting out a detailed guide with the most direct walking (and probably driving routes) to all the local hotels for both during the day, when the NEC usually provides an easy short cut, and for nights when it doesnt.
People really shouldn't be put off from attending or being able to stay late just because they cant get in to the Hilton.

I would imagine booking websites like lastminute and Expedia will still have rooms. I also know that when I got a room at the Hilton in 2016 it was about a fortnight before the con, which I put down to cancellations or the hotel just holding rooms back to closer to the time.
Last year I was on the other side of the railway, but I did ask the security guard in the throughway from the station to the NEC how late that passage stayed open and he said it's 24 hours. It was a twenty minute walk from the Arden to the Hilton, which isn't too bad but I think I did that about eight times over the weekend and it got monotonous. That was largely why I never got back to the Hilton on the Sunday night; Mrs P and I just chilled at the Arden instead.
She's not coming this time, so I'll be hoping to hook up with anyone eating in the evenings!
