I'd be inclined to ignore all the theories that are being bandied about it's likely to do with costs, nothing more sinister than that.

I hope this doesn't mean an end to the mall/eHobby type exclusives too.

Yeah me too. Although it's nice not having to double-dip, I do still want the option of some crazy from time to time...

One version of each toy means it costs less to complete a line, etc. I have no issues with this.

With stuff like Titans Return you had a choice between cartoon and toy accurate. I can't see how less options is a good thing, especially if we are going for the shoddier Hasbro offerings (thinking in particular how Takara actually painted the Titan master heads)

The Titan Master heads were the first things I thought of when I posted this news the other day. Such a minimal amount of paint can go a long way! And some of them really deserve it, like Daburu - Hasbro could have at least painted the eye patch black and the visible eye red or blue or _something_.
The variations were good as well, being able to choose between IDW Chromedome and a more traditional one, for instance. Overall, losing potential choices does feel bad.
And the Allspark's tone in reporting it is typically awful.

So my theory about them holding off on the dinobots to release all in one go was right. That's disappointing.

Not even a boxed set! Just carbon copies of the Hasbro ones!
Flip. Right then. They really are just repeating Hasbro's output. No point holding off buying domestic.

This is... odd. It must be said. I thought that the Japanese market for these things was a little more discerning, hence why they already had better presentation and deco. I'm curious as to how these'll perform.

Takara have struggled (and experimented) with their market in the past; Arms Micron was a deliberate effort to bring down costs and appeal to a younger demographic, IIRC. I guess aligning with Hasbro also brings down costs for both companies. Maybe it allows Takara to concentrate more on the MPs, too. Though I'd like them to concentrate more on Encore!

Is there any data online regarding domestic sale reports of Transformers in Japan? I'm curious as to whether there has been a downturn in that market prior to this decision.

I have seem reports of the toy industry in Japan in general have a down turn, due to the low birthrate. Would be good to see TF numbers though!

I have seem reports of the toy industry in Japan in general have a down turn, due to the low birthrate. Would be good to see TF numbers though! That certainly would make a lot of sense of some of the general trends in other lines - Bandai's heavy push at expensive, complex, high-end model kits from a number of its properties over smaller, cheaper toys suggests an attempt to refocus at a higher ticket-price/lover volume strategy which looks like it might be aimed at young adults with disposable income rather than children and parents for example. We'd really need to see numbers across multiple properties and years to get a real sense of any trends though. (If, say, Transformers sales are down but Tomica sales are significantly up that would say very different things to both of them being down for example. Karl

It's not just the waist (which doesn't look better when bulked up with the extra fists), but the shoulders jut out the arms waaaay too far.
Then the PE attachments seem to make it look bloated, much like Grimlock's robot mode.
