The Pretender Monsters were Woolies exclusives (Devastator, Overlord)
My recollection was *much* earlier than 91 - I went to University in 91 which expanded my toy buying horizons and I'd seen them before that - I think 1989 would be about right.

I got my Overlord from Toys R Us in 1991 for £29.99. (It was a toss up between him and the Classics "Original" Optimus Prime.)
So you reckon 1989 for the Monsters? I'll take you on your word for that.

I got Overlord from an independent toy shop, or by then possibly part of Toymasters so that wasn't an exclusive.
The only time I remeber seeing the Pretender monsters was around the time of minibots and Devastator at Woolworths but I was so young I wouldn't trust my memory it could easily have been a year or more either side.

I'm with Phil on this as my mate had the warthog chap whose name escapes me when I was living in Bo'ness and I left there in July 89.

Looks like they used the child with the smallest hands possible to try to make the toys look bigger!

Yes. Yes I do. I did not touch his tusks but did pat him on the head. Luckily, I was distracted by a nearby Bomb-burst. -Ralph

Start and end with the 1988 Pretenders. Then you'll never have to have a Longtooth.

The entire range includes LONGTOOTH!!!! HAHAHAAHA! Andy Balls! Never! I currently have Grimlock, Skullgrin (need his belt and weapon) and Waverider's inner robot. I never realised Pretenders were such fun (in an amusingly tatty sort of way) until I went through that huge box of Pretenders Nick has (available for sale at AA, plug plug). -Ralph

I really wish i could go to AA to see this majesty of Toy-Fu - argh.
The only Pretender i had was Catilla- and I used to pretend he was the liason (or whatever word i used in lieu of liason when i was younger) between my Transformers and Voltron toys.

I've been clearing out a lot of my old stuff on ebay, and am thinking about filling some of that empty shelf space with Pretenders. I've owned a few, and always thought they were neat, both the giant spacemen and the monsters.
Am I insane? More imporantly, does anyone have any advice if I decide to try to collect them?

Be warned that some of the year 2 figures (Bludgeon and Thunderwing specifically) cost a fortune, and some of them have a testicle-gratingly irritating number of wee fiddly bits like belts and shoulderpads that detach for no good reason and you will never find. You can either pay more for a complete one, get an incomplete one and try your luck with parts sites/parts lots/swapping on forums or get an incomplete one that has all the bits you care about and say 'meh' to the rest.
On a related note, Toy-fu will have a wide variety of Pretenders from 1988 and 1989 available at Aut- *sounds of a man being dragged out of the thread*

I have grown to love Pretenders. Crap kids toy, fun adult collectables. Especially if I like the character. Heck, mostly because I like the character. I have Bomb-Burst and Submarauder complete and incomplete Skullgrin, Grimlock as well as the inner robots for Waverider and Strangehold.
I crave more though! MORE!

I also like Pretenders, even though they are crap toys, but mainly for the characters. I've always wanted to have Thunderwing, the three Decepticon Double Targetmasters, and Nightbeat, Hosehead and Siren just to have the main players of Matrix Quest 1.
And a nice statue of Miss Fatale, and some good poseable figures of all the gangsters would also be appreciated.
Sadly, Hasbro prefers to issue more low quality toys....

The basic toys were crap but I think after the first line, Waverider and his kind along with the beasts, the concept improved. The smaller sized subgroup including Bludgeon were much better toys. THe smaller size made the detailing more impressive and the robots generally more interesting. Admittedly they all just turned into blocks until the extra parts were added, but once added they did look like something.
I always found Vrooms combining gimmick a lot of fun too. I never had any of the larger vehicle pretenders but looking at them in the shops they looked great fun to me.
Then of course the classics showed exactly what potential the line could have had. The little guys werent perfect but I only owned Grimlock in its original form and all 4 of them were good substitutes and showed the line could have had "real" transformers inside all along.
