But yeah, they look pretty naff I'm sorry to say. Have you ever owned one Ian? Naff doesn't even begin to scrape the surface. Both barrels when I can get to a PC! No, Phil, no! Everyone loves the Throttlebots. -Ralph

Tough choice. They are all good but the only true winner is...GOLDBUG.
GOLDBUG.

Things in the Throttlebots' favour: 1. Well-designed, individual heads that you can shine light through.
2. Fun pull-back-and-go action
3. Er... rubber tyres.
4. Interesting tech-specs. But other than that, they look awful, especially standing next to Mini Autobots in robot mode. Martin Martin said Mini Autobots before I did. Yes, one of the big problems this lot have is they look dreadful in comparison to the Mini Autobots whose place in the line they are effectively filling. They might have gotten away with that if they hadn't made one of them the reincarnation of one of the original mini Autobots which then inevitably produces direct individual comparison between the others. Functionally they're the latest toys in a line which began with the Jumpstarters in 85 and continued with the Battlechargers in 86. Unfortunately it's a line with a downward trend. Where the Battlechargers loose the Jumpstarters articulation and weaponry, albeit while gaining proper earth modes, these loose the really killer part of the gimmick, the auto transform. We've done pull back motors in TFs, we know what to expect and these don't deliver. The articulation is shockingly $#!+3, there is none. The robots are squat and all share the same basic design & transformation with the same massive wheel base sticking out the back of the feet. Aesthetically dreadful, but I can almost forgive it thanks to it providing the robot modes with power. Lots of greys and blues on the heads, which indicates some early gang moulding. The car design.... Oh Dear. The chibi super deformed element was always there in the original mini Autobots vehicles and it's back again here, but worse. A whole load of round chubby cars. They're all a single colour of plastic too - I'm assuming the windows are stickers or paint? The exception is Wideload, with two colours of plastic used. Hmm, have we see orange and blue together before? A real low point for the smaller carded assortments. The previous year's were better, and the next year's are a distinct improvement on this.

Right, voting is ridiculously easy this week.
Goldbug, Chase, Freeway & Searchlight are effectively the same toy with slightly different car detail. A friend has Goldbug when I was younger and it was shocking. I think I'd seen it in GIJoe vs TFs before that, not sure.
I've owned both the remaining toys - Rollbar turned up in a mixed lot and I had Wideload as a kid, bought to get the Shockwave decoy. Wideload is something different, an Autobot truck, and he looks better in both modes due to the colours. Wideload by a country mile.

I did think my first Throttlebot (Goldbug) was broken as it didn't auto transform.
I like the Throttlebots proportions. Again, I wish they were drawn like this (or the box art at least) in the fiction. They also look much better as 'small' characters next to the larger toys than Mini Autobots did who looked like they were from a different scaled line (which they were). The Throttlebots were nice and chunky toys and I remember playing with these more than I did most of my more complicated toys at the time. I also liked the fact that they could transform standing up (if that makes sense). Anyway, Goldbug gets my vote as he is another beetle.

Goldbug had some serious coverage in the comic of course, but will vote for Wideload since that's the only one we have.

NO HE DOESN'T!!!!
Shockprowl has had a Throttlebot, and was UNIMPRESSED.
However, I am drifting towards voting Goldbug, 'cos he's the only Throttlebot who's worth a damn. And I remember I got him because he was Bumblebee reborn. The first time that a character had gotten a 'new form'.

I like the Throttlebots. They aren't a patch on the Minibots, but they're from a different era of Transformers to those. They were easy targets at a point I had pocket money to burn, so I bought all six at the time and still have them. They're clunky, yes, but they aren't out of place with the Transformers of that time.
