GRAND MOFF MARTIN. Thank you. Thank you for TRYING to make some sense out of these RIDICULOUS Techspecs.
My Godfathers, they're utterly stupid, abominations, hurt the mind they do. And they're part of the reason why I just don't give a hoot about these figures or characters. I loved your post above, especially how you described Kup, echoes my own thoughts. These figures, to me, seem to begin a 'dumbing-down' of The Transformers, that The Movie excellerated. But maybe I'm being too harsh. I can only say that from my point of view, the idiotic and heretic techspecs of these three Autobots totally TURNS ME OFF them as toys and characters.
And I don't think there is an answer to their techspecs. I think...
I think we have to make up our own...

Why is Hot Rod's function 'cavailer' anyway? Does he help King Charles? Is he a courtly gentleman helping the ladies? Or is it his attitude? And why would that be a designated function? (unless the Decepticons gave it to him in order to assist in Optimus Primes death).

Two excellent pages of discussion! I love the idea Hot Rod is a cavalier because of his attitude. That is utterly brilliant.

Why is Hot Rod's function 'cavailer' anyway? Does he help King Charles? Is he a courtly gentleman helping the ladies? Or is it his attitude? And why would that be a designated function? (unless the Decepticons gave it to him in order to assist in Optimus Primes death). This is purely dredged up from my own head (and from some dialogue in an uncompleted fan-fic series that lurks somewhere on my hard-drive), but I tend to assume that it is a miss-translation of a peculiarly Cybertronian term for a kind of "light cavalry" with a reputation for a "devil-may-care", grand-standing, approach to war and battle - with this attitude being likened to the popular image of Cavaliers as foppish nobles contrasted with a disciplined and professional "New Model Army". (The popular myth regarding the English Civil War when I were a lad). Thus like "Jazz" being an alias due to humans not being able to articulate his real name, "cavalier" is a "close-enough" translation of a term we just don't have in English. (Kind of like how there is no complete single-word translation for "Sempai" and "Kohai" into English, so we get either handwavy things like "big brother" or just skip the term entirely). [ I identified a few other TFs as (former) members of Cavaliers units in that story - notably Excellion and his best bro' Hotwire, on grounds of them seeming to fit that same kind of mould] Karl

I always thought that it was because he shouted too much. But then I remembered that I'm not that good at French, and so that probably wasn't right...
Tech spec madness aside (because it's too early in the morning for this sort of thing) I'll just go buy how the toys looked in the catalogue, as I've tried to do before. For me, although I always really liked Blurr's vehicle mode, because it does scream "Speed!" I've never been impressed by his robot mode, because it screams "Brick!". Having never handled Kup properly, I was never confronted with the full disappointment of his robot mode, and as a consequence I actually like it - and mostly for the reasons that Phil hates it; the vehicle mode makes no sense, which works perfectly as an alien car. And then Hot Rod... nice, sleek, futuristic car, and an attractive looking robot mode. So clearly it's an obvious choice.
By which I mean I'm actually voting Hot Rod. As opposed to the usual "obvious" for me, which would be to do something utterly different.

Bah. I hate Hot Rod.
I'm voting Kup. Mainly 'cos I hate Hot Rod, but also because I liked pressing the cold metal of his diecast against my lips. Surely I'm not the only one that used to do that?

Today I learnt *my* Hot Rod has been lent to a lad friend of my boy’s. This story does not end well.

Hot Rod, easily, though I only saw Kup in-person when the TFC reissue came about and I've _never_ seen a Blurr. I still vividly remember the first time I saw stacks of those three on the shelves of our nearest ASDA in Derby, before I even knew anything about the film. Hot Rod definitely made the biggest impression.

It is pretty academic at this point, but I am actually voting Blurr here. I actually have grown to quite like his GEV-styled vehicle mode, it feels far more high-tech and space alienish than the other two, and I quite like his humanoid mode as well.
Also he talks incredibly fast, like I used to do when I was anxious (so about 75% of the time then...).
Yeah, Blurr has it for me.

Voted for Rodders because he's the best toy of the three, but I feel dirty for deserting Blurr and Kup. They deserve more.
