Woah. That's a moment and no mistake. I did not know that and I've owned Cyclonus since '86.
This is a fascinating discussion! Brilliant reading. I'm undecided. Cyclonus was the one of the pair I got when they came out and I have many fond memories of that, but when I got Scourge a year or two back I was blown away by how cool he is.
Hmmm.

I know one man here who almost inevitably... wouldn't have. Whether he knew the wings were interchangeable or not is another thing. NO TO SWITCHING WINGS!!! -Ralph

Its always seemed like some kind of abandoned concept, even before I knew that such things happened in the design process.
I cant think of any other transformer from that era that came apart like that without a purpose.

Can you attach them on the opposite sides to angle the wings back?
(Mine's AWOL so can't check)

Zero in-hand experience of either, but Scourge has always appealed more.

Difficult one for me, this. I'm trying to go on my feelings from when I first saw these toys, and would have seen them in a toy catalogue. Stood next to the existing see- attack planes like that, they both immediately look more interesting, simply on account of not fitting in. Whilst it's true that Cyclonus initially has the more sleek looking jet mode, Scourge is more interesting on account of being a flying ice-lolly mold - and that is more futuristic.
Of the two, I've not had much hands-on experience with Cyclonus. But Scourge I have, and despite being a shell-former, that never bothered me. The shell formed wings, which was interesting, and his robot mode had elbows - ELBOWS! - which immediately put his articulation above any of the jets. And, as has been pointed out, he's the first with a beard. But-
Ah, who am I kidding? After all that, it's gotta be Scourge.

Human, I fear your logic is faulty. Cyclonus has the superior elbow articulation!

In my own little world I always heavily associated these two with Unicron. Scourge was Unicron's hunter, picking off those who may have escaped a planet's destruction. And Cyclonus was Unicron's Herald.

I don't know. Dreamwave was doing something similar, but... I'm sure this is something I heard when the film came out. Like the toy adverts maybe?

Wouldn't this just make them upside down but still facing the same way? I think the suggestion was to swap them without turning them upside-down. Which would be great, if it was actually Cyclonus's wings that come off. But it's not, it's his entire arm (including wing, engine and tail-fin) that comes off. So if you swap them over, keeping them the same way up, you end up with his engines facing forwards. Martin
