My brother had both of these when we was nippers. Decent figures actually, but I'm sorry I care naught for either character.
Toy-wise, the concept of other figures riding about on Wreck-Gar is attractive. Problem is, no G1 figures had the necessary articulation! I remember Rodimus having good solid punching arms, and I liked his big double-cannon (which NEVER EVER EVER was actually seen in any fiction, slow hand-clap).
I dunno. I care not. Not sure I can vote...

It'll definitely have to be Rodimus for me. Yes, the toy's got a much simpler transformation, but I do like the look of the sports-car-truck-winnebago thing because it's just so nonsensical. Also this was the first time we'd had a character evolve into a Prime, so that was kinda exciting also. Although it did puzzle younger me as to why they'd release both him and Hot Rod at the same time.

Wreck-Gar is an oddity. He is classified as an Autobot, and has rank 7, presumably in the Autobot command structure, but he's also the leader of the Junkion race, so wouldn't that make him rank 10 in the Junkion command structure? Are all the Junkions considered to be Autobots, or is it just Wreck-Gar who has dual Autobot/Junkion status, as a kind of honorary Autobot? Would the Autobot Leader be expected to reciprocate by becoming an honorary Junkion and accept rank 7 in the Junkion command structure? Martin

The cartoon was more helpful with this than the comic, which I know counts for nowt around here. They were implied to be the Quintesson service and repair department, so historically share an origin with the Autobots but aren't the same 'tribe'. Post movie they are allied with the Autobots. So although Wreck-Gar is their leader, he commands an auxiliary army attached to the Autobot military structure, hence being beneath the level of the full blown Autobot command.

I very strongly suspect that Wreck-Gar might be the better robot.
But emotional attachment - buying Rodimus in Zodiac toys as we came out of seeing TFTM at the cinema - makes me vote for him.
I've owned at least 3: original, sold in 1994 and regretted, Japanese reissue, sold in 2004 and regretted, and Commemorative Series. Possibly a 2nd hand one between getting back in during BW and the reissue. Love the Mobile Defence Bay! Oh for a version with beefed up articulation!

It's worth noting that although these two are being done as part of their appearance on the US 1986 catalogue they did, like Jetfire the previous year, very definitely get a UK release this year. It's also obvious these two are a pair, and they shipped as such in both the UK and US despite not appearing together on either US catalogue But this is the second week on the trot I've had to resist throwing Sharkticon in as an option. He shipped with the Predacons in 1986 - see www.fredsworkshop.com/1986.html - then themeatically he's similar to these two.

I always thought Gnaw should have been in the same assortment as Rodimus & Wreck Gar - but then they didn't have Autobot & Decepticon characters together in assortments then. Or did they? Would the cassettes this year have been both? Were the Special Teams mixed or shipped only in teams? Edit: Just looked at the link. So were the Special Team members really a carton of 48!? And going by that list, there is no reason Gnaw couldn't have been shipped with the other new Movie toys. (And that would have meant we got him in the UK.)

I'd have rather have had Sharkticons over Autobot Heroes.

I like how Rodimus's tech specs seem wilfully riddled with contradictions! "Experience is the benchmark of maturity" says the leader who was transformed from a hot-headed kid in seconds by a magic doo-hickey. His sole purpose is to protect other living creatures, but the next sentence tells us that his compassion for others is his biggest weakness!
I have no hands-on experience with either, but I really, really wanted Rodimus Prime as a kid so it has to be him.

Wreck-Gar's Techspecs is fairly good actually, but yes, Rodimus Prime's is drivel. Look at those values! All 9s and 10s! A step back.

Yes, Wreck-Gar's is kind of fun! I didn't know til now he has a gun which makes people stupid, however roundabout they phrase it. That could have been fun to see in action (unless it has been and I've forgotten).

I went with Wreck Gar in the end - purely on the fact that he is a better made toy - quite articulated, nice realistic colours, not plasticy like Rodimus and can do the Cy-Kill in bike mode.
Obviously had a shave the morning he was called in to model for his action figure sculpture though.

Yeah going with Wreck-Gar too, 'cos theoretically others can ride on him, and he has the better Techspecs.

I'm going to have to go with Roadimus Prime here. I really like the character as depicted by his original toy bio (a somewhat different figure to anything we got in spin-off media). The idea of an Autobot Protector - a wise seneschal figure who holds down the fort and guards hearth and home is a good one.
I also love the look of his toy - the humanoid form has an interesting presence to it, and I like that he has a defensive emplacement component. The fact that he basically turns into a hot-rodded Camper Van is just the icing on the cake.
"Roadimus Prime. Optimus Prime. Something strange has happened..."

I always thought they missed a big trick with Rodimus Prime in fiction. There's a fantastic riff on King Arthur in there and nobody did anything with it.

Well I always liked Sky Lynx in the comic, but that's the first time I've seen the original Sharkticon toy so that'll get my vote.

The first of a few weeks of "what's the best of a bad bunch" for me.
I've played with Sharkticon and Sky Lynx a couple of times and both were a disappointment. As I said when the modern toy came out I've always preferred the longer more fish like Sharkticon design rather the the fat, almost piranha like thing shown here. In the plastic it's definitely been on the pies.
Sky Lynx.... now this should be great, multiple modes & combinations, walking, dinosaurs space shuttle. Yet in the plastic it's disappointing. My ming is saying there's somethig odd about the shuttle mode's plastic in hand, am I remembering right?
Predaking.... just like the individual robots he really doesn't measure up to the design I saw first in Trasformers Universe. I think I really did expect him to be a missing Special Team combiner. But the design is closer to the comic interpretation than the limb bots and big & bulky counts for something.
So it looks like it's Predaking by default almost.
