So, I guess BW Scorponok is the first to be an obviously new character with an old characters name.

I must admit I have always liked Polar Claw, but I can't quite get over the fact he looks like he's wearing furry shorts and has a bear leg slung over his shoulder. However, Scorponok used to annoy me because from the word go that bloody cyber-bee claw never stayed shut.

Scorponok was a little disappointing in the plastic. I also don't think the colours are nearly as good as the other BW toys. He LOOKS like a toy animal whereas the others seemed to be trying to look as realistic as they could.

So, I guess BW Scorponok is the first to be an obviously new character with an old characters name. Possibly. But when he came out they were going with Primal & Megatron are Prime & Megatron and I think it's ambiguous enough that it could be real Scorponok. Absolutely unambiguously new is Razorclaw, Jetstorm & Inferno the next year

Never really been a fan of either of these two. Easily the weakest of the first years toys. Both tempremental and poorly balanced, (if these did start life as Autorollers that would explain the top heaviness) not helped by often floppy joints that dont hold together very well.
And finally they are probably the weakest colours schemes of either mould.
After the remenants of automorph tech was dropped from the class they got much better.
But which is better? Hmm. Polarclaw is generally more solid. But Scorponok is....... better?
But Batscout is probably better than Cyberbee and doesnt leave PC armless.
I dont know.

Both toys are repainted in other lines: Optimus Primal in Universe under the same name, Megatron in Beast Machines as Dinobot T-Wrecks Both have more show accurate remoulds And both are on your shelves now as reissues! BUY THEM!

I want to speak for Megatron, which is a really good toy:
A big chunky purple T-Rex dinosaur, the first in Transformers to have the modern way of standing. It's got an opening mouth which contains a water pistol and that form his right hand. His left is a claw formed from the tail and both hips contain missile launchers.
The *ONLY* thing wrong with the toy is it doesn't have any actual hands!
Well that, and the fact he's not Optimus Primal, which is my favourite TF toy of all time!

I know both these toys and have these toys as part of my small but perfectly formed Beast Wars collection. They are indeed both superb.
However, I agree with you Big Phil, Megatron is a great angry looking toy, a brilliant 'Megatron', but the no hands thing let's the toy down.
Optimus Primal on the other 'hand' is incredible. So many play features and weapons! They really don't make 'em like this anymore. I'm not convinced by the very G1 looking Optimus robot head/face, they maybe should have done something different there- the red and blue doesn't work. And although the transformation is basically him just standing up a bit and his ape-face falling forwards, overall he's a fantastic Transformers toy.

This should be very easy, but as ever, I'll try and judge these based on how they look in the catalogues, and not how I know them to be in-hand. Megatron certainly looks the better toy initially - he's a purple T-Rex! What's not to love? But look more at his robot mode and it's certainly lacking... something. Optimus Primal, on the other hand, clearly has two, good, articulated modes, and his robot modes appears to be (and indeed is) packed with play features - and it is much more visually interesting than how that Megatron looks. So, inevitably, this will have to go to Optimus Primal. Who is, of course, one of - if not *the* - best Transformer toys ever.

Primal is indeed a very nice toy, but the transformation let's it down a bit. It's just a beast standing up - and has always looked like Optimus Prime in a furry gorilla suit taking a breather. Megs has a much more interesting transformation scheme (sort of evocative of the original G1 toy) and looks different in both modes. Looks scary and has a glove puppet so he gets my vote.

Sadly I don't have experience with either of these - will pick up at least a Primal reissue if I see one at a good price - but from how they look and what I've heard will go with Primal. I've always found the Megatron toy to be slightly awkward looking, even if it looks fun.

Proving that my younger brother got everything, my son's box has both of these. I can never get Megatron to transform correctly so it's a vote for Primal.

So Optimus: Beating chest gimmick which can be converted to spin the arms in robot mode while he holds the weapons.
Flip up missile launchers from his back
Swords concealed inside the missile launcher cavity which can be held in either hand or both in the same hand
Ball & chain concealed in his right arm.
Another double barrelled missile launcher in his left arm

Yeah, Megatron has no hands as a robot. But what would he need hands for? Oh yes - to hold weapons. Which are there instead of his hands anyway. Problem solved.
He can also eat his rice crispies in the morning and brief his minions at the same time.

Well, Megatron might still win this one. He does always have multiple back up plans or a trump card to play when it looks like he is losing.

I had never thought about it before but Matts right, Megatrons transformation is sort of similar to the original g1 toy and really really similar to Browning. Part of me wanted to vote Megatron, because in a lot of ways it is slightly more interesting toy than Primal, but I've never liked how the arm to tail works and the whole figure is less solid than Primal.

Optimus Primal wins 12-1! HUGE margin of victory. I expected him to win by some distance but that much.... That may be the largest margin of victory yet!

Over the three assortments of Beast Wars Deluxe released in Europe we got a reasonable selection of toys. OK, yes, the UK missed Wolfang as we've discussed. That's Hasbro UK's fault for not getting their finger out early enough and being too obsessed with Action Man However by the time of the final Euro assortment fans were getting twitchy... Despite this decent selection there are FOUR Beast Wars deluxe toys not released in Europe, the only absentees in the main Hasbro range. They are all straight repaints of the original four deluxe and most came out later in 1996 in the US Week 186: What is the best Beast Wars Deluxe Repaint Maximal?Tigatron tfwiki.net/wiki/Tigatron#Toys is a repaint of Cheetor. When initially shown at Toyfair 1996 he was Orange and Green but by the time he reached US retail he was a more cream colour. However his cartoon appearance was a bright white so when his Japanese version came out the colours were tweaked yet again, a change that carries over to his 10th anniversary repaint Grimlock tfwiki.net/wiki/Grimlock_(G1)/toys#Beast_Wars is a repaint of Dinobot. He was only sold in Western markets so ths is the only deco this BW Character has ever had. Sadly his gold parts are prone to GPS. I say "Grimlock is a repaint of Dinobot" but he's actually a slight remould: the chest has been modified to accomodate an Energon Chip Rubsign. As Tigatron was a show character and Grimlock is a much loved original Transforer their absence was much felt by UK fans. Although Grimlock wasn't sold through Hasbro UK or Hasbro Europe, he did make an unexpected appearance on UK shelves thanks to TRU grey importing a couple of US Carded waves at Christmas 1998.
