A more difficult one this, since there isn't a side-by-side catalogue picture to compare with, just the stock photos. I've got the Japanese version of Tigatron, who is indeed very nice, and whilst I've never handled a Grimlock I do have Dinobot, so I do at least know what the mold feels like. But from the looks of them, from those photos... I'd have to go Grimlock. And not just because he's Grimlock (because that doesn't necessarily win here - Tigatron was an actual show character), but because he's a velociraptor with a funky spotty paint job. So yeah, Grimlock wins.

Optimus Primal wins 12-1! HUGE margin of victory. I expected him to win by some distance but that much.... That may be the largest margin of victory yet! That's what Megatron wants you to think. Don't be fooled. Don't let your guard down...

That's it in a nutshell. He's a very good toy but Ultra Primal IS one of the all time greats and was always going to win

Week 186: What is the best Beast Wars Deluxe Repaint Maximal? On the Western toys as they stand as new this is easy. Tigatron is a repaint of Cheetor that doesn't work. The cream looks dreadful and the original orange & green colours looks much better (Orange and RED as BW Hooligan?) Grimlock's deco looks much better and it is DEFINITIVELY *THE* Grimlock. And it did get a grey import here. Plus I voted Dinobot over Cheetor so I think I prefer that mould. So Grimlock gets my vote. HOWEVER Grimlock has not aged well. Lots of GPS reports, with the hips being especially vulnerable, which is ever so sad. I sold mine in a early 2000s clearout and know it'll be hard to replace. And if I was allowed to use the Japanese Tigatron then that would win my vote over Grimlock as it looks stunningly good in hand .... but again the Japanese version hasn't aged well and is prone to yellowing so much it looks like the US release. I have the Telemocha version, with a slightly more metallic green that somehow isn't quite as good. And, inadvertently, Tigatron's absence in the UK may have done us a HUGE favour driving us towards the Japanese market early to get him, frequently in his vs pack with the likewise absent show character Blackarachnia

I started posting this earlier but didn't finish - but I think the opposite to Phil.
I find the Tigatron repaint works much better than the Grimlock - who I feel is just a blatant name slap. If Grimlock joining the Beast Wars is the big deal it should be, then he deserves his on mould. And at least be T-Rex.
I like both Tigatron colours - although my Japanese one obviously likes his US brother's better than his own as he is slowly trying to mimic it.
Edit: Tigatron is a crap name though isn't it?

Stoopid Hasbro for not trying harder to sell their wares to impressionable young children with addiction-forming catalogues. If I'd not had catalogues to pore over, would I have gotten hooked? Who knows... Still, if they were still producing pack-in catalogues they'd have to know what the whole line was going to be in advance, and then where would the fun be in leaking releases from stolen factory items?

Edit: Tigatron is a crap name though isn't it? Quite a few of the show names are. Tigatron, Waspinator, Cheetor, Rhinox - they're really not trying very hard. It'd be like calling classics Jazz and Sideswipe "Porcher" and "Lambor". Um. I think we've come to forgive them due to how good the show was. But yeah. Kind of a D for effort on those ones.

Definitely on the He-Man level of names. Cheetor is the absolute worst, but as you say, those are just their names now so we don't really think about it much anymore.

I thought the names were rubbish back in the day until I saw the cartoon and then they made sense to me. Though, to be fair, these types of names would probably appeal more to the children of the day!

So what were the characters' names before they got their beast forms and renamed themselves according to the animals they turn into?
Maybe they had really cool, clever names before.

I believe some of the names were 'No-Spots' 'Rhi-No' 'Not-a-rat-yet-otron' Unfortunately, Rhi-No then got a cheetah transformation, No-Spots became a rat, and Not-a-rat-yet-otron ended up as Waspinator. Such is life. Martin

Guess it really was a case of nominative determinism in action then. Although you do have to wonder what happened when they were named on Cybertron. "Rattrap? I guess maybe that'll make sense one day."

I guess maybe that'll make sense one day." Absolutely. My friend Lee's Dad was called 'Lee's Dad' and I often wondered why his parents would have named him that when he was born and also if that determined what Lee's Dad himself called his son when he had one.

Week 187: What is the best Beast Wars Deluxe Repaint Predacon?Buzz Saw tfwiki.net/wiki/Buzz_Saw_(BW)#Toys is a repaint of Waspinator. His Japanese version is slightly different with his green becoming grey and the purple getting darker Blackarachnia tfwiki.net/wiki/Blackarachnia_(BW)/toys#Beast_Wars is a repaint of Tarantulas Her Japanese version is slightly different with her green becoming grey and the purple getting darker Blackarachnia has a further repaint in the Japanese BW Telemocha (10th anniversary) line brining her much closer to her show colours. She also has an unused Halloween Horrorcon repaint. The same colour changes from US to Japanese versions on both toys show that these two moulds are, or rather WERE, gang moulded. There's 3 frames shared between both toys:
| Wasp | Spider | A | Head, Chest & Upper Arms | Head, robot legs & heels, gun top | B | Shoulders, Shoulder Hinges, inner body & Waist | Upper Arms & hinges, Neck & robot inner body | C | Wings, Missiles & Lightpipe | Beast Eyes |
Between the two toys we can track the same colours being used on each toy for both them and their repaints on both US and Japanese releases:
| Waspinator & Tranatulus | Buzzsaw & Blackarachnia |
| US Release | Japan Release | US Release | Japan Release | A | Grey | Darker Grey | Purple | Darker Purple | B | Olive Green | Brighter Green | Green | Grey | C | Clear | Clear | Clear Green | Clear Green |
The mould was broken in two, or gated, for the remoulded release of Dirge Gun. Waspinator is then used by himself in Fox Kids. Tarantulus doesn't return till BW 10th anniversary (though had a planned use as Halloween Horrorcon Blackarachnia) Did the Tarantulas portions of the mould have to be rebuilt?

I got Mr Dallas to do me some pics a few months back which nicely illustrate what's going on with the gang moulding Mr Dallas provides the goods! First US Blackarachnia Here she is with US Buzzsaw Then Japanese repaint Blackarachnia With her US Counterpart I knew about the green/grey swap but this confirms my memory the purple was darker too So so far we have the US versions of all four characters:

Blackarachnia.
Buzzsaw's colours may pop in an extreeeeeme way, but it's Blackarachnia's deco that really says "90s" to me, especially "mid-to-late 90s". I love it.
