The tampo on Hoist refers to a (alleged) crime by the Hasbro team which is fun I kinda want to buy a Hoist now. You should, it's a fantastic toy

Now then. This is where it gets tasty. What an amazing bunch of figures.
That said, I don't think I opened Smokescreen.

He had to go somewhere.
There are several places in Armada where categories had to stretch or be defined in very specific ways to do everything. Fortunately a very large coincidence helped me out of the biggest "what the **** do I put this with??" hole

Pinwig has realised several things this morning: 1. It's Hoist I have still sealed (with CD Rom); Smokescreen I opened. 2. Hoist isn't a Smokescreen repaint, which is probably what my thinking was in not opening him originally. 3. I have a toy Phil rates as an all time great and I've never experienced it in hand. When I bought a BM Tankor on that basis I got very excited indeed. 4. Hoist is an odd remix of BW Dinobot and RiD Grimlock, which makes his name very silly, especially as Hoist would be a better name for Smokescreen, who can, well, hoist things. 5. This thread is likely to get expensive for me when we reach the handful of Armada figures I don't have. How on Earth did I think this was just a repaint. Or did I? I can't remember now. I probably assumed it because of the fiction.

Do you know what else you don't have? Yes Hoist would have been a better name for Smokescreen. Smokescreen's TFWiki entry says tfwiki.net/wiki/Smokescreen_(Armada)#SmokescreenA bit more thought might have come up with a better name but by the sounds of it this was a quick last minute decision. That probably reflects a bit on some of the other naming decisions, with intended names not passing Trademarks Examinations and decisions being taken quickly which perhaps didn't take in the full consequences. Returning to Sideswipe, that one suggests something else as the intended name, Nightbeat, WAS used for the Minicon on the same toy - was the bike meant to be Sideswipe and the names got swapped? That still doesn't solve any problem with Wheeljack's name but there's a lot going on with that toy and, as we'll see when we get to it next week, some of what we've been told looks a little odd when scrutinised

I want to see Hoist opened and played with on the call tonight. Right, well that depends on whether I get a chance to get up in the loft and dig him out; that Armada box is probably well buried! Of course. I'm a Transformers fan; where would I be without wants lists? It's pretty much all the (now expensive) repaints. I've got all the original moulds. Powerlinx Optimus Prime (with Corona Sparkplug) Powerlinx Jetfire (with Comettor) Powerlinx Red Alert (with Longarm) Powerlinx Hotshot (with Jolt) Powerlinx Cyclonus (with Crumplezone) Powerlinx Thrust (with Inferno) (Hasbro Reverse Dirge) Powerlinx Thrust (with Inferno) (Takara/Euro Red) Powerlinx Demolishor (with Blackout) Nemesis Prime (with Over-run) Airazor (with Nightscream) Cheetor (with Cliffjumper) Predacon (with Skidz and Side Burn) Terrorsaur (with Ironhide) Plus a load of the minicon sets, but I was never quite into those as much. I only have five of those three packs. Of course now in this new enlightened era of discovering the joy of Micromasters, I'll probably be all over those if I get some out. Rhinox is the only BW repaint I have, which is typical that he seems to be one of the cheaper ones to get now.

Powerlinx Optimus Prime (with Corona Sparkplug) Powerlinx Jetfire (with Comettor) Powerlinx Red Alert (with Longarm) These all came out in the UK as did Predacon (with Skidz and Side Burn) Terrorsaur (with Ironhide) the latter in an assortment with Rhinox and Hoist. Powerlinx Hotshot (with Jolt) Powerlinx Cyclonus (with Crumplezone) Powerlinx Thrust (with Inferno) (Takara/Euro Red) Airazor (with Nightscream) These *didn't* come out in the UK at the time but a year or so later the Entertainer got a case with these 4 in. Needless to say the Thrusts went like that and the others did not hang about Powerlinx Thrust (with Inferno) (Hasbro Reverse Dirge) Powerlinx Demolishor (with Blackout) Nemesis Prime (with Over-run) Cheetor (with Cliffjumper) These *DIDN'T* come out in the UK and Nemesis Prime was especially hard to import. The other toy that never made it to UK shelves as far has been documented is Wheeljack. He should have been in the Rhinox/Terrorsaur/Hoist case but wasn't.

Ah, that would be why my Wheeljack is a Takara one. I wonder if I knew at the time he wasn't coming out over here, or if I just bought that version because it came with one of the mini-con teams. There was, over the road from Woolworths, a comic shop where I was living that also imported Japanese toys. So bits here and there of my Unicron Trilogy collection are Takara versions. Most notably Optimus I think, and I have both Takara and Hasbro versions of Jetfire.

It's gotta be Laserbeak. This is a range with great play value, but sometimes the toys look horrid, or weird, or are just a bit ridiculous. The only one of this lot apart from Laserbeak that I would keep in the collection is Optimus, who looks nice and beefy and well proportioned.

I retrieved Hoist from the loft last night because Phil demanded it. I got Smokescreen at the same time to and have since been playing with him. Hoist still not open...
But, what a smack in the face these toys are to modern sensibilities. Supercons, what we'd call a deluxe now I suppose, and he has a firing missile, plus a minicon mechanism to extend the launcher and flip it out. Then on top of that a working winch that works by itself when you roll him forward. It's just amazing what these toys had.

Then on top of that a working winch that works by itself when you roll him forward. It's just amazing what these toys had. I've seen Supercons sold at the Deluxe price point in Universe. I've also seen a Deluxe + a Minicon sold at the Supercon pricepoint in Armada <screams> Far superior to the 2024 line by a country mile. -Ralph The Armada toys are proper toys with play features as opposed to the Transformable action figures we have now Sadly I know nearly exactly where this happens as it coincides a bit with other things happening. We didn't notice it at the time because things like missile launchers did tarry a bit after that

A thought: are the Armada toys top of the tree for play features? Has there ever been a point where toys have had more?

I've texted Nick and asked him what he can remember as he's the one who bought the toy. I'd say I don't think images exist of Euro carded Wheeljacks BUT I don't recall off the top of my head how to tell the difference for Armada any more! I probably could tell you what was what if I had multiple images of US and Euro stock in front of me. I know at the time the cases that were showing up nationwide that we expected him to be in were just the first two beasts, Rhinox and Terrorsaur, and Hoist and lots of people were looking for Wheeljack I also know there were some very odd things with Armada distribution - Matt never saw a Scavenger for example while the rest of us saw the left over Scavenger mountains. I saw one Overload and that wasn't in SW London where I normally shop. But it looks like the Voyagers post wave 1 were all solid cased, deluxes were in assortments

Armada probably takes it on variety. Energon was mostly powelinxing, and Cybertron... I just remember things flipping out, whereas Minicons did a bit more than that. Nevermind that a minicon is more a toy in it's own right than a planet key.

ARMADA!
When did we get into Armada?!
At last things I known about and remember!
And the answer is LASERBEAK!
Superb toy- operative word being TOY!
I got the youngest one a few years back ('Cos she doesn't like the fact that Laserbeak Laserbeak- is a baddie). It's a brilliant fun TOY!
