It's a strong choice. Kubo was really good.

It's an unexpected choice, given that he has no track record in live-action films. That said, the sheer technical audacity of "Kubo and the Two Strings" suggests that he isn't going to be phased by dealing with a technically challenging shoot. I'll be interested to see how it comes out.

Transformers movies are every year now. -Ralph I think I remember something about it now. The utter HORROR of the MANEVOLENT GROWTH of the cursed Bayverse caused my mind to try to block it out.... Let us sit upon the ground, friends, hold hands, and mourn the passing of our once great franchise....

But Kuvo and the Two Strings is a cinematic masterpiece.
We've never seen a TF movie without Bay's hands all over it (and I actually don't mind him being an executive producer, the TMNT movies have been pretty fun).
If bay doesn't do take-backsies, then I might actually become excited for this. IDW proved the Bayverse can be interesting with better creative teams.

Kubo only showed in 3D near me so I did not see it so I can't comment on the director's past work. Interested to see who a new director handles Transformers on screen though.

Well thanks to the yearly free films weekend in St Andrews Square in Edinburgh I have now seen Kubo (the event only runs 2D films). It was pretty good. I hope Mr Knight brings some of that quality of storytelling to his Transformers movie.

Christmas movie! I'm really hoping that it will have lot's of heart and not be anything like the previous films. But we'll see...

So, given the time frame of this movie, and what I've picked up about the Last Knight, does that mean that the whole premise of the first movie (Transformers first arrive on earth chasing the Allspark) has been retconned away?

Not so much retconned as ignored.

I don't think it's incompatible. Remember in the first film Buster Spike Sam just bought Bumblebee from a car dealer; there was no reference to how long he'd been on Earth. Megatron had been stuck in the ice for years. Also, TLK made out Bee had been on Earth fighting in the Second World War. It's a retcon, but it doesn't break anything.

Was it not Bumblebee that busted the Mars Rover? Implying that his arrival was fairly recent, and the search had only recently narrowed to Earth.
Also: Why do I care?

And as for Bumblebee being around in WWII and the 80s, it's only a retcon as far as IDW and the prequel novels go. As no movie before TLK has ever established anything about 'Bee before he rolled into into Uncle Bobby B's used car dealership, there's nothing to really retcon. A retcon is when you intentionally change established fact. This is just simply filling out backstory.

The early IDW comics were one of the best things about the movieverse. Sad to see them cast aside as they were meant to be official.

Bay can't even be bothered learning a robot's name outside of Optimus, Bumblebee, and Megatron. The fact that no one regards little comics is of no surprise to me.
But otherwise, yeah. The surrounding fiction was much better than the actual movies. Particularly Starscream! He was competent! He was a good leader! Until RotF had him acting like just another sniveling G1 knockoff.

I didn't get to the end of those comics. Were the later ones like Sector 7 worth reading?

It had tappered off by then. Reign of Starscream and the prequels to RotF were fairly decent and nice world builders.

I going to re read them all again. Does get confusing with the 3rd film ones where they are showing the same point in history but different events.

...It's a retcon, but it doesn't break anything. Hey, do you think Micheal Bay could retcon my ass a littler smaller? I've put on weight over the last couple of years, AND I'M WORRIED I DON'T FIT ANYMORE!!! I NEED TO BE SHOE-HORNED IN TO MAKE IT ALL FIT!!!
