I wasn't that keen on TLJ when it came out but it works better when seen after TFA and has aged well. Other than the crap space casino stuff it's more decent when watched now, I thought. I would now say it is the best of the Disney episodes. Shame TROS retcons or ignores it. This bodes well for Martin who considers TLJ the worst Star Wars film of the lot. Martin

Honestly, I thought TLJ was not great at the time but think it is much better now, especially when seen close to TROS.
I enjoyed TROS but it isn't actually a good film.

Hrmmm... I mean, I really enjoyed it, but any time Iain McDaimord is doing sinister Sidious instead of camping it up I'm going to enjoy it.
They could have done more to explain Snoke other than him being a pupil of Palpatine/grown in Sith labs.
And the final showdown could have been an epic battle of Jedi padowans vs Sith acolytes/Knights of Ren. Instead we get yet again more death star tech, but now on a Star Destroyer fleet. Surely the fleet itself was threat enough? Just feel they're trying too hard for a worse threat than previously.
Luke's sabre recovered from Bespin also not explained. I mean we can assume it was in some duct somewhere, but Maz said in TFA it was a story for another time.
Also not happy with how powerful Jedi are now. Rian Johnson did well with this, but Abrams just wants them to be god like.

There were an infinite number of ways they could have made this film break the predictable formula and surprise audiences by doing the unexpected. They chose to stick to the predictable formula.
Execution: Fine Originality: Nil
Good bits:
1. Lightspeed-skipping scene. 2. Pretty much ignores the worst film, TLJ. 3. Richard E. Grant. 4. WEDGE.
Downsides:
1. Seals the deal on this trilogy's general plot structure/themes just being a re-hash/variation of the plot structure/themes of the original, only with less fun and less likeable characters. 2. Cheapens the original trilogy by effectively saying this can keep happening again and again. 3. Lando's magic fleet. Too easy. 4. How is it that fighters can take out Star Destroyers but they need ground troops to take out communication towers? Martin

Martin ranks the Star Wars films: 1. A New Hope - self-contained and all you really need 2. The Empire Strikes Back - proves I was wrong about ANH being all you really need 3. Rogue One - the best and most satisfying prequel, providing much-needed gender balance to the good Star Wars films 4. Return of the Jedi - fun, and brings the entire saga to a fitting conclusion 5. Solo - an unnecessary but well-done appendix prequel to the original film 6. Revenge of the Sith - has the best opening scenes of any SW film, and is as good as one could ask for given it had to follow on from TPM and AotC - I liked the General Grievous stuff 7. Attack of the Clones - lots of lightsabers 8. The Phantom Menace - Darth Maul 9. The Rise of Skywalker - best of an unnecessary, unoriginal trilogy 10. The Force Awakens - remake of ANH 11. The Last Jedi - argh Martin

Well, watched it. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't great. There were some ideas that I liked, but the whole thing was bafflingly paced. Like, really, really badly paced with every plot point badly set up, and a whole sequence of 'something set up and then resolved in the very next scene'.
Not quite sure why it existed really apart from the fact they had to make a star wars film this year. No big moment in it felt earned as there was little to no set up.
The best bit was when I saw the Sith Troopers and thought "oh man I bet these guys are like, elite stormtroopers but then no, no they were not.

Tell you what though... The amount of bait and switches in this film is ridic.
Chewie dies, nope. Han is back*. Rey is turning, nope. Hux will have some impact going forward, nope. Dead. Poe's love interest dies, nope, got off world somehow. Rey dies, nope.
Other random thoughts...
Needed more dark rey.
Good to see Luke finally lift his X-Wing.
What's the deal with that slug dude?
I don't like the force matter transference.
Snoke said he created the bond between Rey and Kylo, I guess this was at Palpatine's instruction, or Palpatine did it and Snoke was covering.
They had to kiss didn't they.
*I wonder if this was meant to be a Carrie Fisher scene? Harrison Ford may not have been able to dye is hair to match his appearance in TFA due to filming The Call of the Wild (which btw looks to be the Han Solo and Chewie buddy flick we all want.)

I expected Leia to die because one of the rules of this trilogy is to kill off one of the original three in each movie. I expected Kylo Ren to turn good and die saving Rey because I expected it to do exactly what happened with Vader and Luke in RotJ, except in a boyfriend-girlfriend way rather than a father-son way. It's a cop-out because like with Vader the hero can forgive them all their crimes as they die, and the writers never have to address (i.e. they got to dodge) the difficult/interesting issue of what the characters would do if the redeemed villain lived to face the judgement of all the other good guys. I hoped this film might go down an original path rather than follow the formula, but what I got was what I feared/expected - lazy clone. Martin

Not gonna get chance to see this till the New Year, so I'll stay out of this place until then. So hard not to give into temptation and click on the spoilers! Especially the 'Martin Ranks the Star Wars films' one!
The flip side of that is that it's a sign of how much I've been disappointed so far by these films, because previously it wouldn't have occurred to me to click spoilers on a new Star Wars film, whereas now, I just don't care as much. Shame, init?

It's a busy time of year. I'm never too busy for Star Wars!!! I would usually have seen a new Star Wars film at least twice by now but I have only had time for one viewing. Meeting girlfriend's family and all that took priority somewhat. I hope to sneak in a second viewing some time in January. -Ralph

This is an incredible (spoiler-filled) video all about the film! Bless, she enjoys doing funny videos about films she thinks are rubbish, but her followers pressured her into doing one about Avengers: Endgame, and she started doing it but cut half way to a rant about how hard she finds to do an amusing YouTube critique of a film that she thinks is fine and has nothing bad to say about. But it's still amusing. Martin
