I still can't figure out why when MCU have shown how well multi movie franchises can maintain a strong consistent narrative, Star Wars sequel trilogy managed to screw it up so badly.

Good lord - that shot of Chewie being interrogated is a little harrowing.
Curious what role the brain creatures had in it.

I think people are stretching the truth a tad when it comes to the different vision for the film. You could select lots of pages from the (excellent) art book for Last Jedi and claim them to show a different vision for the film. Part of what the books do is show the wide range of concepts the art team comes up with, including for deleted scenes.

I watched this the other night. I really thought it was plain awful. Just things happening with no meaning or emotional weight. Acting was incredibly dull. I don't quite understand why a franchise as beloved as this would be treated so poorly. Perhaps I just didn't get it.
Good to see a Jawa Sandcrawler again though I guess.

Good to see a Jawa Sandcrawler again though I guess. And even that has been superseded by The Mandalorian! My daughter would like to watch ROS with me, having watched most of the other films together, and I just really don’t fancy going through it again. But it’s not like I’m going to let her down.

I have asked for the blu-ray set of Episodes 1-9 for birthday so will re-appraise 9 then. I remember very little about it other than having to look away a lot in the last third due to constant flashing lights in dim environments. It worries me slightly that not much else has made a lasting impression...

Well, tried to sit down to watch RoS for the first time since the cinema. Got 15 minutes in before I gave up. I mean c'mon JJAbrams... Was this really the best threat you could come up with? And that name for the plan? C'monnnnn.

7, 8, 9 were like a round-robin where the first and last parts were written by the bad kind of fanfic writer and the second by a talented professional (regardless of whether you think he was the right kind of creator for Star Wars, I don't think anyone could say he's a hack or that he didn't put the effort in).

Yes 8 is a real grower as much as the plot devices are weak and Canto Blight is badly realised, the arcs for the main characters actually have personal development with emotional reasoning.

Now I have seen it again (and could literally see this time the last third of it) I think I can say that for me, it is the poorest of the nine 'episodes'. It's just bland and dull. There's no life to it. Even Williams' score is unusually bog standard. The cast are trying their best but there's just nothing for them to work with. No wonder John Boyega has since went off on one about his experience on it. It doesn't link up with any of the previous 8 films: there's no flow. It's like bad fanfic. We watched with subtitles as my partner is hard of hearing and this showcases just how basic the dialogue was: it feels like first draft placeholder text.
A shame. It's watchable. Palpatine is fun, even if there's no reason for him to be there. It's not the worst SW film overall for me (hello, Solo) but it's...crap.

{Spoiler}If Hayden Christensen turns up in this in some kind of 'Ultimate Skywalker Team-up' to once and for all destroy The Emperor I'll never watch Star Wars again. Finally rewatched last night and this technically does happen. Sorry mate.

Rise of Skywalker for me was the worst of the three sequel movies. They stole most of the plot points from the Dark Empire comics from the 90s, which could have been really cool, but there was no set up in the previous films to build up to this. "Somehow Palpatine returned" sums up the whole movie for me. It was chewing gum for the eyes though.
The whole hidden fleet of mini-death stars doesn't make any sense. Why did Palpatine bother making the second Death Star if he was already making a fleet (a fleet!) of other ships with planet destroying lasers. It makes no sense.
And while I'm on I might as well rant about my least favourite part of the Last Jedi. Most of the film is a chase between the rebels, who are out of fuel and can't jump away, and the First Order who aren't our of fuel and could easily use their hyperdrives to jump some ships in front of the fleeing rebels and cut them off. And don't say they can't do that because in the same film we see Finn and co jump away to the silly casino planet and jump right back to where they were. Arrgh!

The new films are just so bitterly disappointing. Bitter. BITTER. Crushingly disappointing. Like being punched in the stomach by a big sweaty biker with 'LOVE' and 'HATE' tattooed on his knuckles and not even having the will to fight back. The two I've seen sucked my very life out of me, leaving behind a waxy, sallow husk of a Star Wars fan. Rogue One breathed new life, but it seems to be alone in a void lacking of ideas.
All that remains is Cardboard Death Star.
