Star Wars prequels mirrored much of the ot. Lucas was quite specific about it.
And the difference in Ep.VII vs IV is these characters (with the exception of Rey/Luke) are quite different. Well I guess there's a Poe/Han comparison in there too. OK we've got Fin and Kylo, that's enough, right?
People also complain about Kylo Ren not being evil enough, but I found him ultimately compelling. This is not a villain that is bad or good, there's a conflicted grey area here that works really well.

Right if this is now out to buy, what cocktail of variant releases does one need to purchase to acquire the full suite of extras? Or are we waiting on an extended edition at Christmas? As mentioned by bogatan, the only extra extras seem to come with Target's release, that according to the official site has "an added 20 minutes of bonus content, including never-before-seen interviews with Daisy Ridley and John Boyega and a deeper look at the movie’s costumes and weaponry" Other than bundling in other things (I believe Tesco has a book, Disney Store has lithographs) I think the releases are otherwise identical. One regional variation though: I see the US Blu-Ray's include a digital and DVD copy whereas here it's just the Blu-Ray. They've said the 3D Blu-Ray will be released "later this year" and I'd be surprised if that didn't include some new bonus features.

Its a bit of a rip off that the UK bluray doesnt include the DVD. At $20 the US BD/DVD combo costs the same as just the BD here. I should have downloaded the digital copy while I was in the US I dont think it will work now.

Considering how long it used to take for outside US releases to happen, I think we should be happy with what we have!
Didn't realise I got a free book from Tesco, got to go back in with my receipt!

I'll wait for that. If it's coming later it's bound to have extra tat on it, even if it's just the target stuff.

On rewatch I continue to be bermused by Daisy Ridley's acting. She sways between utterly terrible and doing a decent job. The 14 parsecs line still irks me, its delivery reveals that she's in on the joke.
Which segways perfectly to all the nostalgia. The chess table turning on, the training ball... It's all done so knowingly for the audience to pat themselves on the back that they spotted that thing that was in the previous films. It's fine to have these things, but do it with some subtlety that works with the story.
Also, I loathe the name 'The Resistance' and there are some odd dialog choices around The Force that don't match the original trilogy scripts.
Other than that, still enjoy it.

And whilst I'm ranting... Some of the humour is totally out of place. When Kylo is flipping out and the two Storm Troopers walk around the corner and then think better of it. What is this about? Mehhhhh.

I've amazed myself in not having any interest in buying it yet or seeing it again. I'd like to see it again, eventually, but at the moment, I've just no interest.

I'm not going to buy it on Blu-Ray. Not until there is a new Trology Boxed set available. I might buy it on iTunes when there is a wee sale or offer on.

It is not a remake, aside from the astromech with secret info, hero with mysterious back story on desert planet that reluctantly leaves only to become central figure in everything, big planet type super weapon that threatens the good guy's base and rest of galaxy, bar scene looking for safe passage and the death of a mentor to the new hero. But other than that they are completely different!

Martin You forgot the old mentor figure from previous adventures sabotaging the Death Star and then meeting the black-cloaked villain who was as a son to him but has 'killed' his previous persona, and is then killed while our heroes look on at a distance and go 'nooooooo!' Also Poe and Rey take turns at being Leia. The section on Starkiller base is the same as the Death Star rescue. Like. The same. Even down to trash compactor references. It's the same. It's all the same. All of it. LIKE POETRY IT RHYMES.

But other than that they're completely different! I mean, there's no ceremony to close out the film like in EpI or EpIV, but that's one thing that should have been the same.

Going through the extras I thought the deleted scenes were quite unremarkable apart from the Leia one - and that seems to be truncated (going by the novelisation). Also felt the smaller docs could have been incorporated into the main one as some of them are very brief.

So upon repeated viewings of EpVII it has become clear that Finn is the Jar Jar Binks of the new movies, who was himself the C3P0 of EpI.

But he also provides the everyman commentary of events and provides comic relief, as well as tagging along with the group after living sheltered lives up to that point.

He's only partial comic relief whereas Jar-Jar was continual comic relief. His life was not that sheltered. He makes reference to having seen Bad Stuff during his time as a Stormtrooper in the Space Bar scene.
I really am not seeing any connection.
