I mean, if the vote was which of his most-prevalent, in-media heads was better then of course the answer is white crest with a red head. Shiny red head wins every time around. But in this case, no, it's got to be the toy head. It just looks so alien. Which is fitting considering this is, you know, an alien robot. A true Masterpiece Ratchet would be a version of that Ratchet from issue #1 that's been posted above. Alas, Takara are too big a bunch of cowards to do it. And only I would buy it. Ironhide continued to be drawn like the toy in the UK comics up to and including Decepticon Dambusters, a story in which Ratchet had his humanoid look. Though that was a flashback, so it could have been a deliberate move to show that they were humanoid in 1985 but had been more alien back in ‘84.
Ironhide’s animation head is boring.

I agree. Ironhide humanoid design is boring all over. Just so generic. And the toy is just a red Ratchet to me.

Least glamorous vehicle mode from the first two years. They should have made him black with a red stripe down the side.
Why they selected him for the first wave of Classic Heroes is beyond me.

I do think it would look even better with a red windscreen! (Albeit less realistic!)
I have a weird relationship with the Ratchet and Ironhide toys. When I was little I couldn't understand them at all from pictures. They looked so weird and alien
When I was older I was all "hmmhmm they dont look like the comic/cartoon model hmmmhmmmmmmmm"
Then when I learned about the diaclone drivers it all clicked into place. They're easily hurt the most by the lack of a driver!

It's staggering that some one looked at this and thought that it needed to be redisigned into a block with a face.
Saying that, do you think the designer mistook the forcefield projector behind his head and assumed it was the (flat) top?
