Hauler was orange ONCE when someone got Grapple's name wrong Did they get Grapple's name wrong or Hauler's colour wrong? While my every instinct is to maintain that Shockprowl is right and the toy wrong, and that the cartoon colour takes precedence because it came first and invented/defined Hauler, upon further consideration I cannot. Because... Rumble. If Hauler had been orange in the comic, it would be a different matter. Martin

Hmmmm, yeah, good point about Rumble (I have this argument with my well brought-up kids all the time).
Hauler is still not green though. I deny that reality.

Before the lazy stupid wrong colour repaint, I always assumed Hauler was orange like Grapple (which he was) but just had a completely different robot mode. Like Prowl/Streetwise or Ratchet/First Aid/Fixit. Or Scrapper/G2 Roadblock.

Well, as I've said before, Solar Storm Grappel repurposes into Sunbow Hauler.
If one is inclined, which confuzzles me why one would be so inclined, since Sunbow is always wrong.

And I got him when you suggested using this figure as Hauler when we talked about this the last time. My children love him.

Hauler and his chums are just that guy who is always around at college or uni or the staffroom at work, and who you may even quite like, but who you were never actually introduced to and then time goes on and you still don't know his name but he knows yours and it's way too awkward to ask until you reach THAT day. That absolutely mortifying day when you have to address him by name and you just sort of flail wildly at a name and he looks at you with baffled hurt in his eyes!
Hauler's real name is Paul Jarvis.

Hauler is green, because ehobby liked making new characters out of sunbow screw-ups and unused diaclone decos. But since they can't relabel Grapple (Hauler would be an identical deco), call it a new character and expect people to pay exclusive prices for it, they gave it the standard go-to repaint for construction vehicles: constructicon green.
There are two plausible explanations for Hauler's appearance: 1) Hauler is Grapple under a working name, and was probably pulled out of launch for whatever reason too early to be written out of the script. - Inferno/Grapple was the last diaclone mold made, and was still being used in Diaclone atm. It may have been bumped back because the tooling wasn't available for the first year. The decision was likely made to late to get him completely out of the animation. Given he was never seen or mentioned again, this is logical.
2) They needed a crane transformer for one scene and one scene only, and so invented one. - Given how they liked to invent convenient random retractable wrist mounted tools, this seems unlikely as it would be more practical to give one of them a wrist mounted grappling hook.
Either way, whatever you believe, a Hauler toy cannot be yellow, because Grapple is yellow. The green Hauler is canonically Hauler.

Hauler toy could also have been done from Grapple in the same (correct) orange colours but they could have given him a neon pink head, neon green fists and neon purple pants. Possible a 'Hauler Rules!' Tattoo somewhere too. Then he would be acurate but different.

Sunbow couldn't get anyone accurate to anything. They got rumble wrong, hotrod wrong, gave Ironhide and Ratchet heads, and really got Swindle wrong, so eHobby is just retroactively making Sunbow Hauler correctly inaccurate, as was the style at the time!

Sunbow Hauler being inaccurate to the actual toy is the most Sunbow accurate thing they could do!

As a kid it never clicked to me that Hauler was a "missing" character. And I never even knew it was a thing until the eHobby toy was released.
As a kid I always thought they just went and "borrowed" a crane they found. And that Cliffjumper wasn't calling a name, he was saying "Hey, haul 'er up!"
I never knew the controversy existed at all until the early 2000s.

The portrayals of Shockwave, Hauler/Grapple, Reflector, Frenzy and Rumble in the pilot all suggested they were working on imperfect information about which toys would actually be released in 1984, how they would be coloured and what their names would be.
Hauler was bumped to year 2 and his name changed to Grapple.
Shockwave was bumped to year 2, and they didn't change his name.
It could just as easily have happened that Hauler remained Hauler when his toy was released a year later but Shockwave got changed to, ooh, I dunno, Cyclops.
And there's a parallel universe in which the toys were released with Rumble blue and Frenzy red, but Sideswipe yellow and Sunstreaker red. And all three Reflector robots were red and black. Could easily have happened.
