I'm seeing a lot of people (including my friend) think that this backs their optimistic but baseless belief that "WfC3" will be beast wars.
Here's what I think. Studio Series is being used as an overflow dumping ground for ER and "WfC3."
The "WfC3" line will be movie themed. But like ER, Siege, and even PotP, most of the toys in it will not fit this theme.
Meanwhile, the toys that do fit the theme, that they don't have room for, will be movied to studio.

IIRC DVD's still outsell Blu-Rays, for physical media. Also, some Blu-Rays are poor quality or hard to get.
I can't buy Thunderbirds on Blu-Ray as the UK release has the picture cropped to 16:9 (the show was made in 4:3). So I bought the DVD's instead (lower quality picture but good enough for viewing copies and in the proper aspect ratio).
For 20th Century Doctor Who, if anyone wants to buy a DVD they remain in print years after release. The Blu-Rays sell out on pre-orders.
Sunbow TF never came out on Blu-Ray in the UK. Did it do so elsewhere? Come to think of it, have any TF shows been released on Blu Ray?
So DVD as a format still has some life in it yet, for those who want physical copies.

I'm pretty sure there was a BR release of season one of Prime here and there may have been more in the US, but those are no use because region locking on Blu-rays is harder to overcome than DVDs. As far as I'm aware the original series hasn't been issued on Blu-ray anywhere.

Anyway, difficult as it is to admit this, I'm actually excited at least for a Grimlock with a little Wheelie. It might at least be good. And it's been a while since we've had a decent Generations Grimlock. If ever. So now's the time. Although honestly, what's the point of Studio Series and Earthrise being different if they're just going to do exactly the same thing? The point of Studio Series has been, for the moment, that it's conveying a totally different aesthetic - and that's what's great about having both lines. But make them the same and what's the point? Unless these models are not going to be slavish reproductions of the original '86 animation models, in which case... what's the point. Very strange. Unless, as you say, WFC3 isn't going to be the movie at all, but will instead be Armada/Beast-Era, or something else. We can live in hope that we won't have three entire lines dominated by Sunbow homages. Still, at least there's always Rescue Bots and Botbots... |

I don't follow SS very closely. Have they run out of live action movie robots yet?

As just said (the joys of asynchronous posting) there's all the characters in the opening moments of Bumblebee to be done yet. So still a fair few to go. But I doubt also that they'll bother with those. And I don't think they've done any of the Dinobots other than Grimlock. Still a fair few left to go. |

Maybe this will give us a chance of a decent, G1-styled Bumblebee that won't look as monstrous as the recent MP. (Yes, I know I'm mostly fed up with G1 stuff, but G1-Bumblebee is my one weakness.)

I just hope if this is a new outlet for G1 CHUG style figures that they fit with Generations aesthetically and are designed to complement rather than stand alone. We don't need another new style on top of RED.

Studio Series 86 I think is a subline designed to go with Unicron in the same way Jabba's Palace, the skiff and the smattering of Jedi Tatooine figures came out at the same time as the barge. But all of those releases fit in with the existing Vintage Collection range. It'd be nice if Hasbro are doing a movie subset that they slot in to Generations too for consistency. If these are ultra-Sunbow then you've got to look at them and say, well what's the point of RED then? If they look like the natural progression of the Generations style, just like the original 86 toys were a progression from the Diaclone style, then it'll all work together. I'm just not sure how you create a third new style that's half way between Generations and RED. That's a pretty slim differentiation to make.

But they can't do that, it's not movie accurate! Like the studio series is supposed to be with all the triple changing Drift and Shatter and Dropkick... Oh
Still, can you imagine a Springer that's super screen accurate but only turns into a car or helicopter?
