I thought that. I was quite surprised. I'm wondering if this will shake things up a bit by having other characters in other locations from the start. It'll need something to separate it from the original. Surely they can't just rehash that. Or are we in remake rather than reboot territory?

Those are a bit higher res than the ones Kapow posted. I see now in the final panel Jetfire is approaching in the distance. That at least is something different.

Based on those previews - I'm a little disappointed with this both art and story wise. The art reminds me of a full-colour, less well drawn CG2 #25-26 (don't get me wrong, I love the art in this but Nick drew it when he was 14 and it's better than this preview - so I'd expect more from a modern professional comic) and the story just seems very Sunbow G1 meh.

Some notes from DWJ's interview on the 11 O Clock Podcast:- He's only drawing 1-6, but will script at least 1-12.
- The pitch came from Skybound - they had notes to the direction up front and the series will run on when he is finished.
- Kirkman at first said he didn't want to write it (too busy) but then tried to get in as co-writer once the work began, but DWJ said he wanted to do it on his own as that was why they had employed him.
- The silhouette reveal artwork was the first he had drawn for the job and were all done individually - marketing put it together (looking at you Soundwave with the thing on the wrong shoulder). He can't look at it now as he's gotten into the job. It was also done before he had completed a single script so the 'teams' are likely to not exactly reflect what happens in the book.
- Hasbro's only ask re: cast was at least one female, hence Arcee.
- He got into TF via The Movie and Sunbow which he watched daily on telly after school in the 90s
- As of 2 weeks ago he was drawing #3
I still have some more to listen to…

Yes he wouldn't have got far if he was in the UK. I didn't get to what the whole G1 series until we finally got it on DVD. We got the whole Beast wars/machines, RID, Armada before G1. But he doesnt know too much about the comics does he? So maybe we dont end up with a high Furman kill rate that we love. Has he seen any UK stuff?

There were no questions about comics in either interview I’ve listened to. I’m the same- I saw a handful of G1 cartoons, and even then usually just half thanks to their habit of being shown in two bits. I have the dvd set now but haven’t watched much. It’s all about the TFUK for me.

Read it. Liked it. Strong start for something people feared was going to be a mere retread.

US review says most art is "Geoff Senior style" too so should be good for the first few issues that he is drawing & writing.

Aaah, it's really not.
It's just similar in that it's very clear, very dynamic, and quite gritty. But it's not Geoff Senior any more than Jack Lawrence is Nick Roche style.

It does look like the last beast wars comic to me with the line art style. So 31 covers with the 5 2nd prints added. Or could be more if those foil covers do come with out logo & with - if so then be an extra 3 covers at least.

I enjoyed #1. I found it pacy and compelling, with some interesting twists and spins. But I found the art and writing variable. At turns it felt like less than polished fanfic, or like an unsophisticated early eighties comic, or a thrown-together licensed strip, or had emotional depth, or had panels that jumped out. I expect it'll find its footing before long. Some of the art, I found reminiscent of past comics, particularly some early UK strips such as Man of Iron and Enemy Within, as well as Wildman's later Marvel US work. I liked the colouring. The paper stock gave it something of a retro feel.

Finally managed to read it, and I'm generally optimistic about things. The art is certainly the best thing about it - it's got a real dynamic look to it that feels fresh, and different to what we've had sincce the Dreamwave years - whilst also still evoking the Marvel stuff. It's also an exciting and fast paced opener with plenty of jeopardy, and things being familiar whilst also just different enough to keep me reading. There are a couple of "howevers", however, which I'll talk about below. But for now I'm feeling hopeful about things. So in general I quite like the new setup, with Prime and the Autobots having to be on the run from their own ship as the Decepticons had the upper hand. Made a nice change to the original Marvel comic where everyone just stood around saying their own names for a bit, instead of making the most of the situation they found themselves in.
What I like less are the number of deaths in this very first issue. Now obviously they needed to show that the Decepticons were an actual threat, but Bumblebee's death so early in just felt like a really cheap and cynical move, given the character's general universal presence and occasional appeal. (Also annoyed me a bit since G1 Bumblebee was a favourite of mine, but I'm trying to be objective. And failing.) Unfortunately this also sours Jetfire's death later. Again, I can see the reasoning behind it, but two deaths of major characters right at the start just feels a bit like shock tactics for the sake of it.
What I liked even less though was Starscream's bloody murder of a human. Whilst it again highlights just how dangerous these big alien robots are, stuff like this just always feels out of place in Transformers, and feels like a cheap tactic to make this a "mature readers" comic. I wasn't a fan of it when Dreamwave had Megatron do something similar, and I'm still not a fan here.
At the moment these negatives aren't enough to put me off the comic, and I'm hoping that they'll drop these tactics and do more interesting things as the series progresses. So I'm going to keep giving it a go, for now.

I enjoyed it, I've said it elsewhere but it's very much the Ultimate comics approach to G1. Sunbow dressings, but closer to Marvel UK in tone. Love the rough edges of DWJ's art and it's very kinetic and flows. {Spoiler}Regarding the deaths I absolutely approve - it's a war - no-one should be safe, and this sets the tone of that correctly, and shows you the desperate situation.
The bit with the Matrix gives you the out to walk the death's back later, and Bumblebee absolutely had to be the one to die. It's the only Autobot death that gives you the jolt and impact if you were either a lapsed/casual fan who remembers the cartoon, or a long term fan who has seen the position of the character in the brand.
As for the dead human - no problems there either. (As an aside the BS Marvel tried to pull when the introduced Amadeus Cho into the Hulk and said that deep down Banner influenced the Hulk and nobody really died - GTF with that).

I have read this, after two different attempts to download the digital edition (the Kindle app insisted it had completed a download, but had omitted roughly 15 pages, after four and a half hours, the ComixologyAnAmazonCompany app took approximately thirty minutes on train wifi to download it all).
I thought it was ok. The art is quite nice, there is a rough-edged style which gives it a definite sense of energy. As far as story content goes...I'd agree with Andy. I'd call it a remix more than anything. It is more different than say Gundam: The Origin is compared to the 79 anime, and more a case of an ultimate style "keep the fundamentals and change up the details". A sort of Transformers: SEED kind of thing, or, yeah, Ultimates or Ultimate X-Men.
It's fine. I'm not sure that, given the price-point of over £3, it is enough to make me pick it up on a weekly basis. It may be something I consider in trade format, if it does get collected. But it is competent enough at what it does.
Karl (Honestly it probably didn't help it's case that my immediate prior comics experience was a re-read of the first trade of Lazarus (not by plan, down to the fact that Lazarus is one of my favourite travelling comics, because it is very easy to disappear into for a while whilst I han around on stations). A lot of things are going to suffer by comparison.)
