I will read all of these!
I was going to keep my MM buying to the '89 Hasbro releases because it felt like a nice set. But... that might now only be the beginning.

<checks> Oh Dear, Ironworks is the one that got repainted in Brave [Phil mentioned this in the Select thread, but to save him from moving my post...] Very, very minor, but due to gang moulding and the recolour of Ironwork's base, the quad gun that comes with the Brave version of Greasepit's base is a different colour to the TF version. They all have different stickers too. I'm still missing the Brave version of Airwave's airport, but once I have it I'll do a full comparison with the TF versions.

OH MY GOD. MOTORIZED CATERPILLAR TRACKS! OH MY DOUBLE GOD I JUST REALISED THE TRACKS MAKE HIM WALK IN ROBOT MODE!!! This is such a good figure. Compared to Ginrai even with God Bomber this is a different league of fun. His chest opens and Hot Rod fits inside! Armada Prime felt really odd to me when I first got it, but I see the heritage it was coming from now in these earlier figures.

Armada Prime felt really odd to me when I first got it, but I see the heritage it was coming from now in these earlier figures. When I was building my Hyperdrive custom 10 years ago it really made me look at the evolution of the Prime/convoy design. Star Convoy despite being unknown to most western fans at the time had a huge affect on the Primes we got after that. Long nose truck became standard. Action Master, Hero, Laser, Armada and obviously Movie. Energon was the only new mould before classics to go back to the 84 toy for inspiration. Which is mad to think after getting nothing but boxy Primes for the last 5 years of generations.

They were everywhere cheap for years, as was Captain Shark, thanks to the Korean versions. Now...... Part of me still regrets selling Death Garry. A bigger part of me regrets never picking up a korean Captain Shark. But at least I have an okay second hand one.

Is the red L-shaped connector piece for connecting Star Convoy to Grandus/Sky Garry? I can't find a use for it but I read Star Convoy's mechanism can drive a lift in Grandus? It isn't shown in the instructions.

Possibly even more mad is that the only other time they went back to the original Prime for inspiration it wasn't for a Prime but for Thunderclash.

They also have a function in base mode! So I see. Tip up ramp, conveyor transport and off down the second ramp, which has ramp connectors on the end to connect other bases! This is magic. Why aren't modern toys this cool.

Star Convoy:
Why is there no evil Black Hole Convoy with Micomaster Black Rodimus repaint?
You'd have thought that would have been easy money when they did the reissue!

Because things have to be app-enabled or have pointless sound chips in or something instead. Because kids don't like stuff like moving ramps that can zoom cars around. Apparently. (They do.)

I thought I was safe when he got the '89 box out. I'm almost done with '89, I knew he couldn't get me there. But then the 90 stuff came out too. And the Galaxy Shuttle KO, and Sky Garry in his Brave deco. And Phil just laughed.

Japanese toys are a whole different thing. I really liked Galaxy Shuttle, it's a nifty looking shuttle and as a robot it at least has separate legs - but the cheapest on eBay at the moment is over £400!! even the KO is almost £80!

Been reading. So Galaxy Shuttle is a Victory toy but snuck into Zone through being reissued because of his compatibility with Micromasters, but must have been designed from the outset as being compatible with the Zone line because he fits on Countdown's base. Right, got it.
So the Japanese only Micromaster moulds are the Big Powered trio from Zone, Star Convoy, Grandus and Sky Garry from Return of Convoy, plus Galaxy Shuttle.
Well I suppose getting the originals of those is unfeasible, but the Siege Micromasters are well served with Big Powered and Star Convoy available in modern forms. If Omega Supreme is now Countdown's base then we need a lovely big Decepticon shuttle equivalent to be Skystalker which can then be repainted into Galaxy Shuttle.

Right, got it. And there were Micromasters in Japan in 1989. The Rescue Patrol were regulars in the Victory cartoon, flying around on Galaxy Shuttle. TFWiki seems to think that the Galaxy Base that Galaxy Shuttle was based on in the Victory cartoon has Countdown's rocket base at its core: tfwiki.net/wiki/Galaxy_BaseMartin

The Star Convoy reissue can be found easily still for around £60ish. It's nicer than the original.
Instead of Sky Garry you could go for a Death Garry, the Brave repaint. Toy Fu had one for YEARS that hung about boxed at £50, only sold this year. Sky Garry himself isn't massively expensive, a load of boxed ones appeared on the market about 10 years ago after a warehouse find, you can probably pick one up for £150ish now Grandus goes for mad money but the brave repaint Dug Base is cheaper (though lacks some of the functionality esp. with using Star Convoy's motor to power the lift. There's a decent KO of Galaxy Shuttle, Phil has it.

Aha! It seems the Japanese version of Countdown came with the Rescue Patrol. I can't for the life of me remember, but did the Galaxy Shuttle/Rescue Patrol bit come at the end of Victory? I will have to rewatch this now.
