You don't have to buy Transformers to be a Transformers fan. Martin said that. And he is wise and often speaks sense.

This means I must move into PHASE THREE. I am in need of Erector, Flattop, Overload and the Battle and Rescue Patrols to complete the 1989 Micromaster range. PHASE THREE COMPLETE! 1989 MICROMASTER RANGE COMPLETE! City building will commence this weekend...

Building Micromaster cities is complicated stuff. The bases need more connection points! Why is one of Groundshaker's connection points at such a weird angle? Wow, this is.. difficult.
I was hoping to have this complete this afternoon, but I'm off to the cinema for War of the Stars now.

Phil, what exists in the way of additional pieces for the original Micromasters? Are there bits on Shapeways like right angled tracks with connectors either end? anything extra to help build with?

I've never looked much beyond adaptor ramps
There was an attempt at doing a Metroplex ramp a few years back that they mucked up the sizes on!
Will look.

I'm enjoying fiddling around with the various bases, but it's become really obvious that Ironworks and Hothouse's base modes are the same shape with connector points in the same places. It makes it really hard to get them into an aesthetically pleasing arrangement that includes Countdown and Groundshaker. I find, anyway. It would also have helped if Countdown's helipad had connectors on all four sides, and all sides had the little lip that allows the rocket to connect.

Do they work as a single long Micromaster street?
Do you prefer to keep your Autobot bases segregated from your Decepticon bases?
Do you feel a need to keep the Micromasters that come with the bases in charge of the bases that they come with, or are you open to reassigning them - e.g. fire engines to the fire station, construction vehicles to the construction site?

Do they work as a single long Micromaster street? No, because the connector points on Ironworks and Hot House are are right angles to each other and Groundshaker's two connectors are even more narrowly angled than that. The Decepticons can do it, but the Autobots seem to work better as a kind of square with Countdown in the middle. Mind you, that said you've just given me an idea. I do. But I've been trying to find two extreme points that will connect to make a whole city with a 'Checkpoint Charlie' in the middle. Almost got it. I have them with their own bases at the moment, but now you say that there's no reason why they can't wonder off. That's like Transformers using each other's weaponry though; it'll probably upset Ralph.

Seems ridiculous to me not to be allowed to put a fire engine in the fire station, or a tanker truck in the petrol station, or construction vehicles at the construction site, or allow jets other than Flattop and Airwave to use the aircraft carrier and airport. I owned the Battle HQ once. It's actually quite disappointing in comparison to the other bases/vehicles. Very basic, doesn't do nearly as much!
