I look forward to the special but...Robo Hunter? Really? That's still going? Not in any real sense. These specials are test beds for new talent aren't they? they're a place for people to play with things that don't really matter any more. At least that's my understanding.

More detailed thoughts in the 2015 cinema thread in the film/tv sub-forum when time allows but I was fortunate to be able to make it to the UK premier of the documentary film 'Future Shock: The Story of 2000AD' at the Edinburgh Filmhouse. It can't cover everything in 105 mins but it's very entertaining and light-years ahead of the usual 'bif pow comics aren't for kids anymore!' crap that is usually farted out when film makers try to cover comics. Manages to be enthusiastic about the subject matter without being fawning.
Hopefully it will get some decent distribution and not vanish into oblivion.

The hunt for the sci-fi special has begun!
I remember the glory days of comic specials on UK newsstands. Good times, good times. Always liked a Special.

I enjoyed the special. Just about managed to stay awake in bed last night long enough to reach the end. Good selection of tales but the Dredd one seemed a bit simple narratively. I enjoyed the return of Ace Trucking, and the art did evoke Belardinelli, but I don't think I can see that returning as an ongoing strip in the weekly prog. It's a product of its time.

I thought Ace Trucking was the highlight of the special and worked wonderfully as nice one-off return.

I agree it was the highlight of the special and it felt like a one-off.
A love letter to a strip that I think would struggle in the modern prog.

Picked up the partworks book featuring the start of Day of Chaos at FPG. Hot damn that is good stuff. Not even a sadly crumpled page in the book could dent my enjoyment. Gripping and thrilling stuff and very clever moments when events could have been prevented if only folk had metaphorically turned left rather than right. Well worth a tenner. I must get the next volume in that story when it comes out!
In other news, the local RS McColl has started to get the partworks series in again from part 12 (having stopped at part 4) so it will be easier to pick up the books in the series that appeal to me.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Democracy Now book at the moment. It's fascinating seeing all those stories drawn together in one volume, complete with some early Garth Ennis, and I'd forgotten how Dredd is a complete bastard in Revolution. Shockingly so. That is not the Joe Dredd of the modern era.

Oh yes, it's interesting to see how Dredd has evolved over the years.
I hope the partworks print The Question of Judgement 3 parter and Tale of the Dead Man. Some of the most interesting insights into Dredd in his earlier years.

One of the problems with recent Dredd is it is dominated by THREE all time great towering epics: Origin, Tour Of Duty and Day of Chaos. All three are superb. Does the partwork Day of Chaos trade have the issue where Dredd visits the Academy after he's injured? It's missing from the softcover trade and to me is a bad omission.

Will check later.
Book 13 has also turned up in the newsagent so I guess they are keeping in orders for it. Hondo City Justice though, so I can pass on this one.

Burns got me a free copy of the Dark Judges one a few years back, which was useful as I didn't have the Anderson strip within. The print size is tiny, about 1/4 of the original but what's in them is good stuff

A quick check of my Dredd spreadsheet says I have all of them bar Direct Action. The pre 1000 stuff is in Case Files, Sabs is in The Art of Kenny Who and I've got the digital progs of Mega City confidential.

The partwork Day of Chaos book is one of two volumes by the look of it. This one has 1700-1704, 1740-1751, 1753-1764 - so no, it doesn't have Downtime in it from 1752, which I think is the story you're referring to?

It's only just occurred to me that these partwork books cover quite a lot of ground. The two I've mentioned tonight cover 28-30 progs worth of Dredd each, and there's 80 books in the series. So that's between 2200-2400 progs worth overall, roughly. I know a good chunk of the total will come from other strips, like Anderson, Insurrection, Waugh etc, but I had it in my head that this partwork would only really scrape the surface of the Dredd canon, but in all it should cover quite a lot of it.

I missed Day of Chaos at the time. After reading huge swathes of back issues from a friend of my mum's of issues from the start to around 86ish my regular time on 2000ad was late 80's to late 90's (and the first 100 or so Megazines, The Best of 2000a and Judge Dredd: The Law in Order) and I've tended to dip in randomly every few years since then. My last big spell was a 3-month Ipad digital sub just after Day of Chaos in 2012 and the occasional collected edition from the library.
I only came back for Dark Justice in Dredd for the art and seemed to have been sucked slowly back into consistent reading ever since though in printed format (there's something nostalgic about picking up a weekly comic from a newsagent). Even reading the Megazine again and picking up some of the Hachette partwork books. I seem to have been sucked back into the world of Tharg...
