What? No, it's a GOOD thing they didn't make the unhelmeted Juddoon, Sontaran and Dalek Sec ultra rare chase figures as threatened. That would have been insane!
The money is on them being used in troop builder packs, the new Argos catalogue is out soon, maybe there'll be packs of 4x helmetted villain + 1x unhelmetted leader, and 4x bronze daleks and 1x Dalek Sec.
That's far more preferable to '500 unhelmeted Sontarans ever'

Post by Philip Ayres on Jan 10, 2013 9:59:43 GMT
Oh yes far better.....
And don't forget that the unhelmetted Sontaran is effectively Strax while 4 Bronze + Sec is Cult of Skaro
Was stupid they were going to be limited anyway

Did they ever say these were going to be the limited figures? They just showed them with S3 and a S3 promo image didn't show them so we all assumed they were the chase figures....
Not sure about making Tennant in spacesuit rare though.

Sorry. Misunderstood and thought those figs had been dropped entirely. -Ralph They still might be, I guess it depends if any stores want to pick up the troop builder packs (which again is only conjecture but it makes a HELL of a lot of more sense than making them 'super rares' which would have been insane even for CB)

Hear the tale of Phil's dialogue with character. As you know my Dalek Saucer was short one Bronze Dalek Drone. Mr Jon Slater, occasionally of this parish, had the same fault and character gave him a replacement. So I emailed them: From: Philip Ayres Sent: 10 January 2013 09:48 To: Customercare Subject: Missing Part
Hi Guys
I bought the Doctor Who Character Building Dalek Spaceship set www.character-online.com/products/Character-Building/Doctor-Who/Character-Building-Doctor-Who-Dalek-Spaceship-Set/ from John Lewis in Kingston while staying with my mother over Christmas.
I've got back home to Swindon and opened it up to build. Unfortunately there's only one of the bronze Dalek Drones in the box where the packaging says there should be two. Any chance of a replacement?
Thanks
Philip Here's the response I got Dear Philip
I write in response to your recent e mail concerning the purchase of a Character Building Dr Who Dalek Spaceship Set.
I can confirm that Character Options Limited released a very small number of these sets with a Gold Drone Dalek and a Red Dalek Drone (the packaging states includes 2 Drone Daleks).
If you wish to return your Red Dalek Drone with a copy of your proof of purchase to our freepost address below, as a gesture of goodwill, we will be happy to swap for the Gold Dalek Drone.

This is applicable to UK customers only.
I hope the above is of assistance, and may I take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

PThink before you print - only print this e-mail if absolutely necessary Whoa, did I say I had a spare Red Dalek Drone? No, I don't. Assuming the customer has something and telling them to return it? Hmmmmmmm Now as it happens I do have a spare part in my Saucer box. But it isn't the Red Dalek Drone they specified so I'm loathe to send it back to them and especially AT MY OWN EXPENSE.. And I know Jon had a double of the same part and they didn't ask him to return that either when he told them what it was. From: Philip Ayres Sent: 10 January 2013 13:13 To: Customer Service Subject: Re: 171397-CB-Ayres
Got a Bit of a problem then.... As there's no Red Dalek drone in the box either: I've just checked! Fortunately their next response was a bit better: Dear Philip
Further to your e mail.
I can confirm this is an isolated incident and if you provide your full UK postal details I will organise to send a new Dalek figure in this instance.
I hope this is satisfactory.
Regards

2 different types of 11 Doctors is a bit weird even this year, especially as the first box set wasn't hard to get.
The five packs are strange the Angels New York one seems to be just the standard blind pack figures so at this point seems redundant, who is buying these who wont have gotten all of series 2 in the last 18 months. The other set is more interesting because I want 3 of the five and 2 of those three are variants from the blind packs.
The vehicles and playsets all seem a little uninspired.

Still, one shop does not a pattern make, nor one data point a trend. -Nick

I really like the two five-pack sets. Primarily because they'd make perfect gifts for my sis.
I can happily ignore the blindpacks, since I've already got a few 11s, and the 11-pack finishes me off for all the doctors.
The consol set makes me happy, but not as happy if it were the RTD era consol. May try for it if BBTS gets uit and puts it on sale (Or if Bogatan doesn't mind finding it on sale)
The Dalek Skimmer looks fun, and if it comes with half the Cult of Scarro, then it'd be a great buy. Cyberman Skiff also looks fun.
The Cyberman mask made me laugh, but it's nothing I feel the need to own.
But I sorta feel that they missed a few opportunities here. Why not do minisets with all the doctors? Maybe instead of the entire control room, each doctor comes with one or two of his companions, and the central tardis consol tower? Maybe bring in some of the most noteable villains, like The Master, The Rani, and Davros? Why not K9? Or do some sets based on pre-11 storylines? I mean really, the fiftieth anniversary, they should at least do one set that features the first doctor and the original cast. Maybe even just a special set? The Tardis, 1st Doctor and his granddaughter all in grey scale?
Also feel they missed an opportunity to jump on 11's new companion. Assylum of the Daleks, with Oswin. Clara, Strax, and the salurian woman and her wife (I'm sorry, I don't know their names).

Hmm. Not impressed with Characters offerings for this year. Two different versions of the 11 Doctors seems especially silly. Doesn't really look like there is anything particularly attention grabbing in that line-up overall (and one or two things in there that ought to be available already and seem like they will not benefit from being pushed so far into the relative future)

I wouldn't mind more CB variants of the Doctors. These could have easily been brought out a year and a half ago.
I still hope for other characters/companions/allies etc.
Those 5 packs come across to me as recalled and repackaged s2 figures with a couple of new faces.

Tesco had series three. Got two packs and now own an Ood and scribble on face Amy. The new packs may prove harder to feel, there are a lot of armoured chaps with dome head/helmets, but soon I will have a Sontaran.

Based on the pics of the monster pack the Sontaran and Rhino chap (and the Ood) will be easiest to identify by their weapons/ball thing.

Nah! I think they'll be wide spread, with a big Who push all year. Tesco are in the middle of a big restock and the series 3 figs weren't even in the system yet. They've probably been holding off as they cleared out all the old stock, CB who and all the other toys lines that have been reduced since Christmas.

Been thinking about this a lot lately. And I know I've said this earlier or elsewhere, but the more I think about it the more it makes a measure of sense.
Aside from a few specialty e-retailers who dabble in imports, Character Builder has no representation in america. But, over here Lego has such a hold over the Building Block genre that only a juggernaut like Hasbro is brave enough to attempt to gain a share of that market. And so far, only Megabloks have been even remotely successful in gaining a foothold. Hasbro, even with a juggernaut franchise like Transformers can't get a foothold, and Megabloks really has only succeeded in becoming to Legos what Gobots used to be to Transformers.
So, I don't think many companies really want to attempt it. They don't want to spend the money on development, production costs, and all that, just to have a potential failure. And on the flipside, I think this is what keep CB out of the american markets. So the more I think about this, I wonder why some company that's already present here doesn't make an alliance with CB in the way that Hasbro and Takara often work together? For hypothetical example, Bandai (I think Megabloks is Mattel?) could work together with Underground Toys to bring over and distribute CB products in the states. It's a potential loss for both companies, but also a potential boon as well. Neither company has as much to lose if the endeavor failed, as they would if they tried it alone. Benefits for both could outweigh the risks. CB would have a much bigger market, which could boost their production allowing them to be able to make newer products faster, by allowing Bandai to worry about the distribution and related costs to the states, and they could potentially gain access to Bandai properties like Ben 10 and Gundam. Bandai of America would be able to tap a market they currently have no access to, without having to spend money on product development, and wouldn't have to spend as much money on production costs. This wouldn't be just for Doctor Who, they could also gain access to CB's military sets (With some mild deco changes would easily be able to be turned into sets representing American Armed Forces), and potentially CB's other licenses (They have Scooby-doo, right?)
I don't see this as a win-win scenario, but like I said earlier... neither company would stand as much to lose as they would if either tried to go into the american building block isle on their own.

Sort of gave up on this line after being unable to find Series 3 packs anywhere.
I did however find that The Entertainer are doing £10 'Value Multi Packs' of 5 x Weeping Angel, 5 x Cybermen (2 of them variants), and 5 x Silent all together. I picked one up today.
The package is basically 3 army builder sets wrapped together. I think the Cybermen part was at one time an Argos exclusive?
