Points off for the colour art not matching Action Master Prime's established colours. Andy Maybe it's Flashback Prime, here to recap for all of us who are too old to recall the distant events of the late '80's?

What does this mean? What is Free Comic Book Day? Martin It's when comic shops give away special free comics, usually timed to be a Saturday when a big film is coming out. Its generally very poorly promoted. Not all shops participate (FPE doesn't) so Ebay is the best way to get them. The only way to get this comic will be online or by turning up at opening time and hoping that the shop is carrying it. Within 15 mins the free stuff is usually gone (based on past experiences with FPG). -Ralph

Within 15 mins the free stuff is usually gone (based on past experiences with FPG). Yeah, it's a decent idea, but poorly executed. The main problem is the lack of promotion to the people it's trying to reach [non-comic readers]. It's supposed to entice new readers into shops and let them try something they might like and hopefully make them become new customers for the shop. However, the comic companys have now started putting new material in their FCBD books, meaning that the people who already read comics then want to get all the FCBD stuff, and they're not the people it's aimed at. Add to the fact that the shops have to pay for the comics they're expected to give out for free, then there generally isn't that much free material to go around. I think the publishers should go back to just reprinting good material that represents what they publish, along with suggestions of trades/etc which are good jumping on points, and maybe some of the cost of the books that all participating retailers pay can be used as an advertising budget to spread the word. But if anyone does miss #81.5, it'll be in the TPB.

Something about the cover didn't look quite right, so I fixed it: Heavily influenced by #331.

I find this tremendously encouraging. To be a 20-issue wrap-up of the whole Marvel TF series, rather than just Furman's run, it needs to consider the whole run. Martin

The first couple of free comic days were big deals but it has dwindled in significance. One of the problems, too, from a UK perspective the comics aren't free to the shops (I think) because they have to pay for shipping and freight costs anyway, I reckon that's why some FP doesn't go along with them anymore.

I think it costs US shops too. Admittedly they're not that expensive [around 5-20 pence an issue], but it soon adds up if you're not getting much in return for it.

I really, really hope this becomes a commercial success... even if it sells 30K issues a month, but enough to keep it going past the proposed issue 100.
This series, for me, is 50% faith in the creative team and 50% faith in the strength of the characters and legacy of issues 1-80.
Since the end of IDW's "Revelation" and with the exception of LSOTW and Ongoing 22/23, the Transformers themselves (the characters) have bored me to tears.
Plots can be deep or stupid or halfway in between, but it's the characters that readers come back to every month, they're the heroes whose adventures we want to read about.
The Marvel series had some amazing characters at its core, and I'm very much looking forward to getting reacquainted with them again.

That's true for me for much fiction I read, but it's not paramount for me with Transformers. The characters in Transformers can't compete with the characters of great literature - no Transformers writer has ever been that good in my opinion. It's the imaginative, original, mind-expanding concepts and ideas where Transformers done right prevails over all else. Keep coming up with quirky concepts, don't humanise the robots themselves too much, and I'll keep coming back. Martin

Points off for the colour art not matching Action Master Prime's established colours. Andy Just to clarify, the book is set a little while after the end of 80, more than enough time has passed for there to be some changes from his AM getup (you'll see more physical changes to him on the preview page like his back parts). I did originally do him with the blue arms though. A lot of stuff has come out a lot earlier than expected so it'll be a while before things are put in context...

I'm excited and optimistic about the story, from having heard that Simon read every US issue including mini-series as preparation.
However, the preview page gives me no additional indication as to whether the story's good or not.
Or whether Simon is acknowledging (or at least not contradicting) the history of present-day Ultra Magnus established in the UK comics.
(I am happy with the art, but I already knew Andy could still draw.)
