Utter farce.
Political vanity project, much like the new parliament building. It would seem every few years we get a new one I wonder what's next? The Edinburgh International Space Port?

It's all about the urge to see trams on Princess St, due to a much-repeated political delusion that it is "one of the world's premier shopping destinations." No it isn't, it's a dirty hovel. Locals go to the shopping centres, tourists go to the Royal Mile. The flagship store is a Primark!

Oh good grief. So the whole of the city-centre is going to be disrupted for a pointless piece of engineering which will do nothing to improve the transport infrastructure even when it is completed. Good grief.
The next thing was going to be the mag-lev connection to Glasgow that they were talking about a couple of years ago (direct non-stop connection between Edinburgh and Glasgow which was supposed to improve journey times for everyone in the central belt. How traveling to Edinburgh to go to Glasgow instead of just going straight to Glasgow was supposed to improve my journey times.... ). That was knocked on the head but I'm sure that they will come up with some other terrible white-elephant scheme.

A device that can launch Glaswegian rugby fans at Murrayfield like a railgun is a better idea than tearing up a massive chunk of Edinburgh for years in order to get people from the shops to... somewhere a couple of miles from the shops along the same route that about 16 regular buses already take.

I guess the point of the tram is that so tourists can point out of the window and say, "ooh, I want to go in that shop" then walk halfway back down the street to it once the tram stops.
Or for cheeky guides to tell gullible visitors that it was originally intended as a way of giving the castle's soldiers a moving target for practice.
A non-stop Glasgow-Edinburgh link? Well, that seems jolly useful for the people of Stirling and Falkirk. I think I'll request something similar between Swansea and Cardiff.

I believe the proposed caber-based launch system proved unfeasible.

I believe the proposed caber-based launch system proved unfeasible. It kept tossing them clear out of the park so we had to change contractors and there really wasn't anyone who could match the McCullen bid for some reason... Karl

No, it really doesn't. And remember, the current 'build one half of one line' plan isn't even destined to conclude until 'summer 2014!'.
There will one day be a very good comic movie made of this.

Oh I have no love for the tram farce, especially as it eats away at public funds. If only such determination was shown towards preserving, maintaining and improving public services.
But looking at it from a certain perspective, it's a gift to writers.

The amount of money that they have spent on the ever shrinking tram-line could have supported a huge array of now-vanished and valuable services. The whole boondoggle has now passed into the massive white elephant zone. I doubt that you would need more than one hand to count the number of people who can honestly say they still want the thing.

As someone who wakes up on their train to see the works related to the Incredible Shrinking Tram Service five mornings a week.... I am just going to put my head in my hands and let out a lament for the sheer waste of time, money and other resources that this project has consumed for a gain that it entirely illusory frankly.

And just in time for the Festival Invasion too That would be why they have reopened Princess Street. York Place is a bit behind where most Festival things are. Still, Haymarket is still shut off at the other end of town. And someone decided now was a good time to do Bridge works on all the routes that could be used as diversions from there. Wahooo! Edinburgh!!
