The trains to/from the Burger will do a roaring trade once the bus station shuts down.

Live update: The east end of Princes Street leading to St Andrews Sq. still looks like a bomb site with raised sections of tram track but, err, no road around them, only gaping holes.
Good luck with opening that by next week!!

It's alright, Councillors don't have to use buses there. Nor do they have to work in that area and worry about their jobs if their workplace closes due to the large drop in footfall in retail.

I love the way the media now describes Princes Street as being open... when the east side of it is still closed and inaccessible.

I can confirm it is impossible to get through there on a bus or on foot.

Yes and that road is right next to where the other major roads will be shut down due to the trams.
Today, I proved I could walk a city route in half the time the buses take. Not because the buses are bad (Edinburger has an excellent bus service) but the tram works are causing massive delays.

While flicking through my 2009 published A-Z of Edinburger, it states that the trams will run from 2011. Ahhhhh....

Last week they were talking about extending the network out to Dalkeith. How I laughed!

Wow, those Spanish trams are cheap. We must be getting gold plated ones.

Lunar Titanium, and they have Linear Cockpits for the drivers....
The tram works are now even starting to mess with the pavements - each week it is a mystery as to what the exact route through all the fences at Haymarket Station onto Dalry Road is going to be. It is as if they generate a new labyrinth every weekend ready for the start of the working week.

York Place to reopen this weekend. I wonder if it will be 'open' in the same way to traffic as Princes St/St Andrews Sq was (i.e. railings down, traffic stopping cones up)?
In other news one of my friends from work had a shock a few weeks ago when his youngest found all the brightly coloured, loose and open cabling for a tram stop to play with courtesy of a workman neglecting to close up an access panel. The city council have assured him there was nothing to worry about as the cabling was "not live" at the time. And then sent him some guff about how great the trams will be (great enough to offset electrocuting your kid??).

Trams by May!I'll believe it when I see it. I like the way they say that we have to get through a Scottish winter first before we can fully commission the trams. Are they expecting them to not work if it is a bad winter??

Bollocks. The last Council statement claimed that driver testing was happening In September and the line would be open in December, specifically for bringing people to Princes St for Chrimbo trading!
Amazed that heads continue to not roll on this.

Are they expecting them to not work if it is a bad winter?? One would think after taking years longer than was planned, having spent several million pounds more than was planned, and cutting the system down from 5 lines to half of 1 line that someone in charge might have thought: 'Uh, but will it work in the Winter time, uhhhhh dunno.'. -Ralph

Much hilarity will soon begin I expect. Princes Street looks a total mess now with those jet black tram lines and poles all along it.

Um, seriously? It is going to take almost another half a year to actually do testing and train the drivers... If other developments proceeded at this rate we would still be waiting for them to finish the Channel Tunnel I suspect. It isn't even as if the tram line is going to be that useful once it is finished, seeing as it is already going to places that are well served by existing public transport networks. If it was heading out to places like Firrhill who could do with the extra connectivity I could see a point to it.

Do Politicians live in Firrhill? That may be related to your answer.
And yes, six months to test and learn the half a line. There is forward and reverse to cover after all!
