We've missed having one, those of us who like the soccerball.
Damn UCL tonight and Celtic go ahead against Barcelona - pretty sure that's a harbinger of the apocalypse if ever there was one.
Man U underperforming again.

And for those of us who have joined since the last football thread died my team are Glasgow Rangers.
I supported then since I was a wee boy, because they played in blue. It's why I also have a soft spot for Everton.
David Moyes must be the heir apparent to Fergie at Man Utd.

Football you say?
Local team (Derry City FC) have recovered from a dubious stint and bankruptcy to get promoted back to top division (okay they only have 2 in FAI league) and are in the cup final this season - so well done to them on their tight budget.
Ireland have been pretty rough to watch, getting tanked by Germany (with a lot of great goals from distance) was not fun. The fact Germany went and played Sweden went 4-0 up then drew 4-4 is enough to make me sod.
Liverpool FC. Totally imploded early this season and are still tettering about struggling to find form, desperately lacking someone to score goals beyond Suarez. Not sure the documentary on Channel-5 has done them any favours either.
And thats just chatting about my favourite teams and not even going to the controversy of the day - that crazy muppet (Leeds fan) who assaulted a keeper - the furore over the action (or lack thereof) of the group attempting to get rid of racism in football (is someone who laughs and passes on a joke calling a fellow player a choc ice really in a place to make a stand? I'm not so sure).
Ah, football - providing the working man with so much controversy to chat about through the working day.
Suprised to see Celtic do so well against Barca by going ahead, 1-1 at half time, but they've had taken that before the game started I can bet.
Marc.

I think the decision to get rid of Andy Carroll without securing Clint Dempsey's services will cost Liverpool.
That documentary was a very bad idea.
Scotland have been atrocious to watch, Levein is not the man to change things we should get shot of him.

Barca bit lucky tonight - didn't watch all Utd match - but sounds like they got lucky too.
Chelsea doing poor in Europe despite being hot in premier league (almost like Man City last season)

They improved a bit, but they are very fragile. The squad just isn't as good as it was previously was.

I like a bita footie. I only realy watch the big European matches or internationals though these days. The amount they get paid and the amount they roll around aggravates me.
I don't support an actual team. I often wish I did, but I never have. Closest would be Inter Milan, 'cos I got quite into Football Italia when it was on Channel Four what seems like a million years ago. Of the English teams, I'd prob drift towards Manchester United, purely because they always seem to have a majority of British, if not English, players.

I do miss Football Italia - A.C. Milan were my team ah the days of Guulit, Rijkaard and Van Basten. Criminal that Van Basten's career was cut short by injury, one of the best strikers I have seen.

Italian football has unfortunately been in decline since Channel 4's coverage stopped, its slump along with match fixing scandals hasn't done their league any favours. Premier League & La Liga are dominant with Bundesliga possibly now in third place.
Be interesting to see if Man City can manage a result tonight.
Oh - my view is footballers get paid a market rate, other sports men and women get paid a lot too, the fact that some footballers exageratte injuries or involved in controversy? Well I see rugby players box each other in the face, eye-gouge and worse, I've seen olympic athletes throw childish tantrums (and fail drugs tests) - but only footballers seem to get the stick. Its like football is a scapegoat for a lot sometimes.

I think it's been the transition in a lot of people's eyes from football being the sport of the common man, to this rather at times glamourous over-hyped publicity machine. Which at the same time has seen football lose a lot of the rough edges and physicality. The play-acting being so excessive at times and so theatrical it's difficult to take them seriously.
However, at the moment the sport I'd least like to be involved in Professional cycling. A friend is a keen cyclist and when the last big doping scandal happened he thought Pro Cycling could die entirely as it went amateur again with all the sponsors pulling out.
I think old swingball has done that sport a damage that will take decades to recover from, if it does.

Yes that's a terrible do, ol' Armstrong. From the sports hero, to the sports devil. Very sad. Disapoining. He needs to come out and either fight it, or admit it.

I don't think he needs to come out and fight it. That would be a ludicrous position, he needs to hold his hand up.
But this is the FOOTBALL thread so...
Not a great night for English teams, Arsenal and Man City both dicked. Looks like Man City will be out, Arsenal I think will be alright.
I think Mancini has a difficult season ahead of him and if he doesn't get more than just the Premier League I think he'll be on his way.

Tough question - but!
Roy Evans - amazing passing and attacking play - defense consisted of hiring 3 giant tough men and hoping that David James wouldn't botch on crosses. Amazing to watch, but always lacked the steel to finish off the league.
Houllier - solidified the team, great in cups, but not quite aggressive enough to win leagues when mediocre teams stifled games.
Benitez - Great tactically in Champs League, bizarre decisions in premiership and stubborn nature (shocking use of Robbie Keane for instance) - lacked aggression to kill off weak teams and after much chopping and changing (and shoddy ownership) - all ended in tears.
Hodgson - Experienced manager, perhaps didn't get a totally fair crack of the whip, wasn't given that long in charge had a lot to repair and didn't get off to great start.
Kenny - never had enough of a chance, legend coming back to club with so much to fix it was never going to be easy to turn around. Totally over-performed in domestic cups whilst failing to fix league problems and that was the end of it.....
my views at least.

I'm on board with you on that. I always thought Benitez was a complete prick. It's a straight toss up between him and Wenger for manager least in touch with reality at times.
Dalglish was never going to work, and I cannot believe the transfers that went down on his watch.

One of my favourite parts of todays football - someone throws a pound coin at Suarez - he points it out to the ref who seems dis-interested - so Suarez puts the coin in his boot! Classic! For all the stick footballers get, there is one who knows the value of money!

Football needs to move with the times.
We need goal line technology and a video review panel after every game which can discipline players. You dive - 3 match ban, it will soon sort things out. This should also extend to shirt pulling.

I didn't bother watching second half of Arsenal match - wow, what a game I missed.
Football is going to get goal-line tech of some short eventually. Not sure how far things should go - American turned rugby into American football which is totally different.

Yeah, it was, I thought Chelsea were gubbed. Sadly though, that memorable scoreline already eclipsed by more racist allegations.
Rangers got pumped 3-0 last night, which was entirely predictable as we are now a 3rd Division side, but there were still some idiots who thought it an upset.
