I remember using combiner back in the eighties as a kid. I think it's just a logical term that's always existed. Careful, round these parts if you don't say 'Special Team' you'll be hung up and burned alive. ITS OKAY PHIL WE WERE TALKING ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS, NOTHING TO SEE HERE (Yeah, combiners is a better word)No we don't mind Combiner here. It's Ralph who gets rabid about Special Teams!

Where'd you guys get "special team" from anyway? They're called Sub-groups, as per Marvel's run. The toys were heavily promoted as 'Special Teams' back in the day, especially in the comic. Hence why I was confused why online fandom called them gestalts for many years! -Ralph

It actually annoys me that COMBINER WARS isn't called SPECIAL TEAMS WARS.

Gestalt is a german word that basically means combiner. A group that operates as one, or something.
I've never heard anyone call them Special Teams until here. Makes them sound like they're mentally handicapped, the way the word "special" gets used stateside. I tend to get annoyed at "combiner" as a group name. Marvel introduced the term Subgroup for all thematic teams. Dinobots, protectobots, headmasters, actionmasters. "Subgroup wars" sounds silly as a title, as does "Special Teams Wars," but Subgroup sounds considerably more official and technical than combiners or special teams. To me, "combiner" is a thing, what a particular group does, not a viable title like Targetmaster or Protectobot.
I'm not sure what I'm trying to say anymore. But I never heard anyone use the term Special Team in this manner, before I came here.

I assume its inspired by the special operation teams in the military.
I dont use the term often, but I have always liked it, it just seems to fit.

That reminds me. When did Combiner start being used all the time in fan circles over gestalt. It used to be gestalt this, gestalt that... Probably after RiD Ruination. Toys had a Combiner logo and everything. Before that, Combiner would be more likely to refer to the Micromaster fellas.
