Has anyone here seen Steven Universe? I put off watching it for ages just because lots of people said it was amazing, and in my experience that means something is terrible. Also the first few episodes are kind of terrible.
But it's actually amazing. Like, holy crap amazing.
The show is about a kid called Steven Universe and his magical Gem friends who he fights monsters with. Sort of. The problem with trying to 'sell' the show is that pretty much everything about the setup is a major spoiler. It starts like an Adventure Time reskin, and the early episodes aren't that good (though they are only 11 mins long each so that's not as big a problem as it could be). The only reason I stuck with it was because I was assured it would get better, and by episode 25 (Mirror Gem) it becomes consistently great. The season 1 finale is one of the best television episodes I've seen.
It feels a lot like Transformers Animated (do you remember that, when TF shows were good?) but a lot more interested in exploring characters than having fight scenes.
Also it is basically Rock Lords. WE ALL LIKE ROCK LORDS.
But yes. Trust me. Seriously. It's great. It just takes a bit of time to get going.

Steven Universe is all kinds of wonderful. I absolutely love it. And I love all the characters. I love that none of the humor is dedicated to belittling any character, and that each one is shown to be believably flawed.
I don't think it really compares to TFA very well, but I'd certainly compare it to MLP before the bronies made it too weird.

No no, see by the end of season 1 it is clear that it is literally a Transformers show. Like, it has the same plot as the current Robots in Disguise. A small group of heroic inorganic space aliens have made Earth their home after a big civil war. Their people wanted to drain Earth of its resources (assumedly) but literally didn't care about the people there. Their leader is dead. They spend their time mopping up stuff from the war. They have a spacebridge. There are combiners. Then the bad guys come back.
I think it is just that Steven Universe had a better solution to 'how to put off the bad guys appearing sporadically/till the end of the season' with real focus on character drama and comedy rather than weird superhero filler.

Oh, I've seen most of the early eps, and all of the later eps. So I'm familier with the plot. I just disagree on the TFA. It doesn't vibe TFA at all, as the general themes and positive messages are far more MLP:FiM. The plot of the show may be similar to a generalized transformer series, but the spirit/nature of the show could not be further.
Also, general warning, this show is struggling BADLY. CN treats it like shite, and gives all it's attention to Uncle Grampa and Clarence. It's chances for ratings barely exists. On top of that, it's US fans prefer to watch it from illegal online sources, which means it isn't getting support CN sees as valid. On top of that it's very popular with girls, and we ALL know how CN hates carering to girls. I'm genuinely shocked it's made it to a second season.

The ratings don't seem that different from other Cartoon Network shows, but yeah don't scare me man It looks like the end of season 1 has got a lot of interest in the show from everywhere, and as we're only a few eps into season 2 I guess it means there's at least time for it to build up more interest.

For anyone keeping score, there's a new episode every night this week.
Today's was suitably incredibly gay, I am happy! I was worried Cartoon Network might have been cowardly!

I know right!! I'm so glad to have been so horribly wrong about where that plot was going. Especially after Wednesday's episode I was all ready for Peridot to betray everyone. I think it's great she got a redemption plot which at the same time is entirely in line with her character. I hope she sticks around Also, man, Yellow Diamond is huge!! And what are they doing about Lapis??!?!

I think the cluster takes priority over rescuing Lapis.
Also, I've a feeling yellow Pearl is why Peridot hated crystal Pearl so much.

Something I've noticed, is that Garnet is becoming an increasingly more active character. In the first season she quite often had only one line per episode. Maybe a bit more if the action was more intense. But since Jailbreak, she's become really talkative, and more of a central character.
I wonder if Estelle was less available then, compaired to now, if she's become more comfortable with voice acting, or if it was a conscious story decision to keep Garnet more mysterious until her big reveal?

Careful Mr Jetty, most people on this forum are still way behind in early season 1!
But I think it's probably a little from column A, a little from column B

Sure does look like her. Peridot: In regards to peridot, while everyone's ecstatic about her telling off yellow diamond, I've seen almost no one comment anywhere on one of the most remarkable part of her growth. She tried to be the peacemaker. Before she disobeyed YD, she tried to get everyone what they wanted. She tried to insure Earth and the Crystal Gems would be safe, then she could go home and serve her master. Steven: One thing I loved that my mind keeps going back to on Steven's birthday, when he was upset that she'd grow up and he wouldn't? It's very sweet and very telling of him that his fantasy for the future is that he's gonna marry Connie, and that SHE is gonna be President. His fantasy isn't for himself, it's all about how awesome Connie will be. Pink Diamond: I read an interesting fan theory earlier today, that Rose isn't Pink Diamond. But Lion is. Pink Diamond was damaged in battle, and became a corrupted gem, like the monster gems they fought early on.

Pink Diamond was damaged in battle, and became a corrupted gem, like the monster gems they fought early on. Yes but Lion has a mane and so is male. That said yeah, the Diamonds do seem to be SUPER big. Rose was big but not that big, of course then again Gems can shapeshift.
We still don't know what the dealeo is with Bismuth (the bubbled gem inside Lion's mane)

I honestly see no problem with Lion's mane. Technically, gems are all genderless shapeshifting space rocks that can present however they want. Amethyst has taken male form more than a few times. I'm not sure if Lion *is* Pink Diamond, but I thought it was a unique enough theory, and one of the better ones. Certainly better than the "Rose is evil and Steven's a gun" theory.
I *do* think Steven was a calculated and tactical move, though. But one born of boundless love. Love of humans *and* gems. I believe Steven exists to unite both species. He's already doing it. He's gotten Beach City to accept the Gems, and he's gotten the Crystal Gems to become a more active part of the Beach City community. He's gotten Lapis to believe in him enough that she sacrificed EVERYTHING to protect him. He's taught Peridot how important organic life is, to the point where she chose to protect him over going home. Like Lapis, she sacrificed everything for him. But he's "turned" these two just by love and acceptance. By believing in them. Just by being himself, and without violence. And I think that's exactly what Rose wanted. What she, the leader of the rebellion could never do, because she is the villain in Gem Society. Steven though is a natural bridge.
I also think that Rose will return at the end of the series.

Peridot is now officially a Crystal Gem, and it's a forgone conclusion Lapis will eventually become a Crystal Gem (for Steven). But I wonder if Jasper will eventually get a redemption arc, as is the popular fan belief? Ordinarily I'd say she shouldn't, because the gems need some good strong villains. And that some people are beyond redemption. But SU is all about flaws, and character growth. All about making mistakes, and forgiveness. The Gems forgive Peridot for the wrongs she did to them, when Peridot realizes that all life is valuable. Lapis hasn't forgiven the Gems yet for trapping her in a mirror, but they kinda regret it thanks to Steven, and we know she probably will. Jasper plays right into this theme.
