Early episodes are weird and silly, but very fun. Later episodes become really intense. It's definitely worth investing in. Watch the series and choose your patron gem! Mine is Peridot.

I don't think I've ever been in this thread before... is this... true? ROCKS? Alien gems that can take on physical magic humanoid forms, Spoiler who rule over a vast intergalactic empire. When they set their site on Earth, a gem named Rose Quartz led a rebellion to protect Earth and all the wonderful organic life on it. These are the Crystal Gems. 5,000 years later, Homeworld is gone, and Rose Quartz falls in love with a human. They have a son named Steven Universe, but Rose and Steven can't exist at the same time due to gem biology. Leaving Steven to be raised by his father, and her surviving Warriors, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl.
The episodes are very short, only 10-12 minutes long. Early episodes are weird and silly, but very fun. Later episodes become really intense. It's definitely worth investing in. Watch the series and choose your patron gem! You might want to edit or spoiler most of that explanation. Half the fun I had with the show was that it jumped in with next to no explanation what was going on and watching it evolve and fill in the back story as it went.

Admittedly it not going to be seen by many people all the way on page four that either haven't seen it or haven't had bigger spoilers readinghte previous pages, but still.

Yeah, I mean I was quite convinced by ep 25 that the Gems were the villains, or at least Garnet was! Though at the same time it's not like this is a brand new show, tut tut come on people!

And I am up to date. I still kind of enjoy the Onion episodes. I still half expect him to turn around and gut someone., but thats part of the fun.
The other Beach City residents Im less of a fan of. Or maybe its just the settings, having them iteract with the Gems more or in new ways might stop them feeling like cheap bottle episodes which make very little sense in a cartoon.

The Gems are just such better characters though! In every way, shape or form! But yeah, I'm not quite sure why it is either Steven and the Gems or Steven and Beach City. Mix it up a bit! (more Peridot!!!!)

I like Peridot, but at times she feels like the Gems version of Drift. Sometimes its the Im too cool for school original version that feels really forced, sometimes the far better written MTMTE version.

Actually a lot of my favourite episodes are the Greg flashback ones which are usually not Gem heavy. I think the townfolk are just kept away from the the gems to keep them grounded which the show needs, but the balance is often not quite right.

Like I said I like her fine, but she was thrust front and centre very early on and for quite a while. She already seems to have had more starring episodes than Amethyst. It just feels like less of a gradual addition or developement than Connie, Greg, Lapis or other reoccuring characters.

That could be a result of watching them all in a short span of time; in broadcasting terms that stuff took about half a year all told, thanks to Cartoon Network's genius scheduling!

I know for a standard show nothing you said would be overly spoilery or at all(except to people like me who want as close to zero information about a show as possible beyond the most basic premise) but they clearly made the choice not to reveal a lot of that information right away.
For me anyway, if its backstory or story arch stuff not revealed in the first episode its spoiler territory.

It did occur to me while watching that there probably had been time between her first appearances and her concentrated block of episodes that enough time had passed for it to have been due to fan feedback. Either way is fair enough, shes a popular character that does shake up the dynamic in a good way. But watched back to back the character really feels shoved down your throat.

Nah the first few episodes are rubbish because Steven is a HUGE jerk. Possibly the least likeable lead character since Ally McBeal. The weird and disconnectedness of them is the only thing that kept me watching.

Couple things. Early Steven- I've been thinking a lot about this lately as SU has been really pushed on CN the past couple months (airing several times a day now instead of maybe once a week), which is now mixing early episodes with current ones in 1-2 hour themed blocks. I don't think Steven is a jerk, but he has a very narrow world view. He doesn't see, or think much about anything beyond himself. He's also been a bit spoiled because Garnet, Pearl, and Greg dote all over him. He's never cruel to anyone, or uncaring to anyone else's feelings. But these things just never occur to him until someone points it out to him. He's very much a young kid. But around the time when Connie is introduced, and listening to her story, as well as the other things happening, he started to grow as a person. (I honestly have a lot more to say about this subject, but typing lengthy posts on an iphone is exhausting)
Beach City Episodes- There is one really great thing about Beach City, and Beach City episodes. It's a place where every weird child can see themselves. It's a place that normalizes and even celebrates non "traditional" families. A family can be a kid, a dad, and three moms (i say this as I feel Amethyst is a sister figure) A family can be two daughters, a father, and grandmother (the pizza family) A family can be two sons, and a dad. (The frymen) A family can be a daughter and a mother (sadie and barb) A family can be two half brothers, a mother, and stepfather. (The onion family)
Normalizing these things is something that is extremely important.
Other- has anyone here caught that the onion family is one massive pun? Sour Cream+Onion= Potato chip flavor Yellowtail= Fish Fish and Chips. (Yeah, i realize our chips and your chips are different, but the pun still works)
And since Blue didn't realize Onion was autistic coded (i didn't either until it was pointed out to me), the transgender community believes that Lars is transgender coded, though it's a bit more iffy (because if he is, it's deeply coded). But I can definitely see what they do. And I wouldn't put it past Rebecca Sugar to be playing a really really long game with this one. (Though honestly I feel that's Lars' only redeeming value. At least to me)

But watched back to back the character really feels shoved down your throat. Meanwhile I genuinely think there are not enough episodes with Peridot! Also I got the children's book that just came out! Mostly to see if it really was as gay as the episode it's based on (it is! I thought they might chicken out by not stating Ruby was a girl, or that she and Sapphire were JUST GOOD FRIENDS but they dont)

So I finally found the uber cute Funko Mystery Minis ( comicsalliance.com/funko-steven-universe-mystery-minis/ ) I want Peridot (naturally). But I just knew I would get Onion. I always gwt whatever I want least, in droves (don't matter how rare). So I got it and got out to my car, ripped it open. It's gonna be Onion. It's always gonna be onion. (Why did they even make Onion? Why not Jasper? Or Stevonnie?) Get the box open, and it's sealed in a black bag. I feel it as I get ready to open it. Bulbous giant round head. It's Onion. I grumble. Of COURSE It's Onion. Maybe I can find someone who has a spare anyone that I can trade him for. Onion is literally the only one I don't want. I tear open the bag, dump it out in my hand, and IT'S ROSE QUARTZ! It's not Peridot. I'll NEVER find Peridot. (I've bought more blind bagged ponies than I'll ever admit to, found every rare character and main character, but have NEVER found Rarity. The only one I really wanted) But Rose is sooooooo much better than Onion!

Well done! Those don't seem to exist in the UK yet (and trust me, I've looked!) There seem to be another range too, in packets and they have noses. It's a shame those are mostly season one themed, as I prefer the season two character designs a lot more (though obv Pearl gets hers early!) EDIT: These things. They look super tiny though!
