The big pants are off putting it has to be said, but when you consider that Takara are really using the animation models to guide the design of these figures you can see why he looks the way he does. Hip panels aside (bottom prototypes are the Voodoo ones):

Hmm, the Voodoo one is looking pretty good there actually. Yes, it's the big nappy-pants that bother me. Also, Takara looks a bit fat in the belly. I think Voodoo have done a better job in that area. I just think Takara have gone too Sunbow here.

His groin doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Really?!?!
I gotta tell ya, guys, I'm getting a touch of The Fear over this figure, and its inevitable mold mate. Years I've waited for these toys, decades! And it's not right, not right!

If anything, I prefer the proportions of the MP. To me the 3P looks a bit off - the van front looks bolted on to a too-small torso like it's trying to force Ironhide to fit a body type, whereas the MP looks a bit more "integrated" and natural. I may not be articulating my thoughts here very well!
Either way, I'm probably just waiting for Ratchet.

I wonder if Ironhide is one of those toys that is better in hand than in pictures.

The vodoo one scores points for a smaller groin and not having wheels on the back, but loses points for the chest looking wrong and the for the lower legs and feet looking a bit pants.
Ironhides groin does look too large and I cant think of a reason it needs to be like that, but my main grip is going to be the back, those wheel look awful and there doesnt seem to be enough bulk behind the chest so its looking hollow even though it isnt.
In fact I wonder if the wheels and hip panels were originally intended to fold up? Panels would fill in the sides of the torso and the wheels would become a black band just below the uppe torso, which the animation model sort of has.

Either way, I'm probably just waiting for Ratchet. Yeah, pretty much the same here. I mean, Ahhnhahd's awesome, and all, but it's not like he's Megatron's true nemesis, or anything...

My enduring memory of Ironhide is him digging Megatron out of rubble, it's always the first image which comes to mind when his name comes up. And just with thinking of that, his desirability notched up a bit for me... MP as a line will not be done until we can re-enact all of Target: 2006 (and that includes Fang and the piano). -Jim

My enduring memory of Ironhide is him digging Megatron out of rubble, it's always the first image which comes to mind when his name comes up. Here's hoping that the Hasbro version comes with a "his own grave" accessory. Although given that the Takara version doesn't come with a slavishly-movie-accurate "vapourised head", I'm not holding out too much hope... And just with thinking of that, his desirability notched up a bit for me... MP as a line will not be done until we can re-enact all of Target: 2006 (and that includes Fang and the piano). Luckily we'd also need an MP Giant Unicron Killing Gun, or something. Still. That'd be nice, though... Oh there's a masterpiece we'll never get. MP27a twisted and conjoined tormented soul Ratchet. Aye, sadly so. If it's not Sunbow, they ain't gonna do it. That said, that sounds more like the sort of thing they should put in the Hero Mashers line. Get it? Eh? Get it..?

I'd be up for a Masterpiece Requim Blaster! That qualifies as a Unicron killing gun!

Hip panels aside (bottom prototypes are the Voodoo ones): I think the real problem here is the head: It's too thin on the toy. Be interesting to see the toy and work out where the hip panels are in vehicle mode and try to figure out where else they could have gone.

Good spot with the head Phil, you're right. That image is very low res, but I've fiddled with it out of curiosity to correct the problems we've identified: lowered the chest, removed the hip panels, made the head slightly larger/wider. Hey presto - all of a sudden it's exactly what it should be:

You've totally nailed it there, Gentlemen. The head is way too thin. Oh dear oh dear. I'm really getting The Fear, guys! Head too thin, nappy pants, thighs too thin, fat belly, crap back.... NNNOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sooooo... Bumblebee's mould takes us back to the three uses per mould rule for Masterpiece cars, which Takara noted Wheeljack would break because he was part funded by good sales of the previous figures. So what's the betting here then? Ironhide, Ratchet and... black Ironhide?

The problem is that'd nearly be Ironhide. The only other nice Ratchets I've seen have been red, and that's also too close to Ironhide! I suppose you could do an orange one like the search & rescue Armada Powerlinx Red Alert www.tfu.info/2003/Autobot/PXRedAlert/redalert.htm

I guess the question is whether Ratchet and/or Ironhide ever appeared in the Sunbow cartoon in different colours for any reason. 'Cos that's what they'll go for.
