TFA was about finally moving the story forward on film after 30 odd years. It was, which was why it was disappointing that it was just a Star Wars remake. Rogue One might actually be original!!!!!

TFA was about finally moving the story forward on film after 30 odd years. Exciting. Rogue Ones just filling in more of the back story which hasnt worked so well for Star Wars. Apart from Clone Wars that was fantastic. At least thats been my feeling on it so far. Having said that I am eagerly waiting to book tickets for Imax. Wh-aat?! Remember Shadows of the Empire. That was good.

Its not TFA fault that the original Star Wars trilogy was already quite repetative and when they tried to expand the formula no one liked the prequels. Whats a film to do?

I gave my parents a copy of TFA on DVD and asked them what they thought of it. There was a long pause before Father Unit replied with: "We thought it was going to be new. We didn't know it was a remake before we watched it."

I only experienced Shadows of the Empire via the comic version. I thought it was crap. Sorry, Andu!

It was literally the same though But.. but it wasn't. Deathstar - Deathplanet. Luke was hardly in it. Er.. No Ewoks. Leias accent. Stormtroopers with personalities. Rey didn't have an Aunt or Uncle that died horribly. BB8 wasn't part of an android double act. Er.....

I get that TFA wasn't as original as some hoped it would be but I really don't get the hate it receives for it. Decent enough film, far superior to the prequels and SW for a new generation. Good experience.
Rogue One... a story not needing to be told (on the cinema screen at least) unless you're a higher end fan.

Good experience. Well yes, I mean of course it was a decent film, it was a remake of a good film. But disguised as a sequel, which was what annoyed me. This may be controversial but I'd rather they have just straight-out remade Star Wars properly if they were going to do that, rather than act as if they were making the most unimaginative sequel in the world.

I agree. TFA was fine for what it was though it was so obviously a remake I didn't understand why it was called Episode VII.

If you can't think of anything new, just leave it alone.
Fat chance.
This new one can't be as disappointing...

I'm still struggling to care and I don't know why. I'm not even seeing it opening day as there is a live stream of a theatre show that day I am booked for instead.
It's a Star Wars film. I should be feeling excited!

I know what you mean, Doc'. I used to feel that way about Transformers movies too.

But this has Felicity Jones! Ralph likes Felicity Jones!
I think part of my problem is that I'm just not interested in another prequel, especially after Episode VII was a remake of Episode IV. I'd rather see what Old Man Luke is up to.

I can't say I've been _excited_ about a new Star Wars film since the run-up to the (disappointing) Phantom Menace. But I have higher hopes for this film than I've had for any other Star Wars film since Episode 1, because it looks like being the first old-style Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi with an original plot.
The big Star Wars story (the war against the Empire) and the story of the young hero learning to use the Force (Luke Skywalker) have been told and I don't want films that repeat that or try to out-do it, as it just cheapens the original trilogy. But I would like to see lower key spin-off stories set within the Star Wars universe, showing us people and places we haven't seen before.
Hopefully this film will do that, and if we get two more like it, I might just end up calling them Episodes 1-3 in my head.

I'm very unexcited by Rogue One as err, we know how it turns out. Well, you could say that about the other prequels, or any film of a book you've previously read, or any film of historical events, or etc. Doesn't mean the journey/execution won't make it worthwhile. Martin

It usually does though! Very very rarely do prequels work as there is no suspense as to how they end.

Yes.

Yes but they'd be aware of that from the point they chose that as the story to do. There'll be more to it than that.
Er, won't there?
I've got the chance to go and see this on the morning of the release day again, with 400 kids. Last time I did everything to avoid that, which included the unprecedented decision to go to the cinema on a school night to avoid being spoilered. But I guess this time it doesn't matter so much!

You never know, it could be the X-Men: First Class / Agent Carter of Star Wars.

To be fair, visually, if the tech, ships and costumes are properly 1977 Star Wars, that's all I need.

Two days to go. I have the day off work for the first 2D showing. I have two action figures of the lead character. I am avoiding all spoilers. Not reading any reviews.
Still not feeling excited though. I'm just not feeling any buzz. It's a Star Wars movie damn it. I want to feel excited!
I even got the fever before Revenge of the Sith came out!

Curiously enough, I have the same lack of anticipation.
Lurgied up and have a half day off on Friday but the way I am feeling I might just end up coming home and lying down.
