Curiously enough, I have the same lack of anticipation. Lurgied up and have a half day off on Friday but the way I am feeling I might just end up coming home and lying down. Andy Go outside and shout STAR WARS three times at the moon

I'm quite under the weather with seasonal lurgy so had to go for a lie down straight after. I need to see it again as I know I did not take it all in due to sickness but I generally enjoyed it. I found the last half an hour to be quite nail biting.

Saw it this morning...
Right now I'm finding it hard to find fault with Rogue One. This to me is the Star Wars movie I've been waiting for, sure we don't have Jedi's doing Jedi stuff, but it's not necessarily needed. There are acknowledgements to the power of the Force and certainly it would seem that it guides the actions of at least one member of the Rogue One band and this is certainly enough.
From the opening we have no crawl which is great. Yes, it felt a little wrong it not opening with the Star Wars theme, but this movie shouldn't have these things. The crawl coming from episodic Flash Gordon, it should not be in a non-episodic movie.
The humour and nostalgic references are much less in your face, except for in a couple of instances. We have Pig and Butt Face from the Mos Eisley Cantina making a cameo as well as one of the silver droids we saw elsewhere in the original trilogy (but I'm forgetting where right now). These two are realtively obvious, the first being drawn out slightly longer than necessary as if to say 'make sure you notice these guys!' and the latter is cut back to again in a later scene. Humour is driven by K-2SO given a matter of fact opinion of events, in a way combining the role of R2D2 and C3PO (who also make a brief appearance meaning that Anthony Daniels keeps his 100% movie appearance rate!).
It may be a minor thing, but even the late 70s haircuts of Rebel Alliance members on Yavin4 was a great touch!
And also everyone dieing. Good times, ends on a downer, ah EpV how we love thee.
2 major highlights -
1 - Peter Cushing is back. I was amazed at how good a match appearance wise the actor was they got to play Moff Tarkin, then on leaving the cinema I was told it was done with Special FX. Given that I thought it was a double is testament to how well done it is.
2 - Vader's decimation of Rebel fighters in a 1 vs many combat situation. This is what I thought we would see in EpIII as Vader hunted down and destroyed the Jedi. Instead we got General Grievous because someone no doubt showed Lucas some concept art of a cyborg fighting with 4 light sabres and he thought it was cool. Here we see Vader at his most powerful, brushing blaster wielding opponents aside like they were life size dolls. The great thing about this scene was that all we have up to this point was Vader doing some more force choking which we've seen in EpIV and EpV. It happens so late, you wonder if that's all we get and then BLAM, red light sabre, let's go! It's not often a smile breaks out on my face in the cinema, but it did here.
If I have complaints they're very minor-
1- Vader making a pun, WTF? Also in the sith temple scene, he didn't really move quite like David Prowse did. And was something off about his helmet? He looked like he had a huge double chin.
2- There seemed to feel like the movie wanted a discussion of the cost of war and how far can you go for what you believe in. It certainly painted a picture that some Rebels were in a grey area, but this was never fully discussed. Given the setting of Jedha, you could be forgiven for drawing comparisons to real world events. There seemed to be something coming out of Cassian shooting a resistance member to protect Jyn, but this was never expanded upon, nor him deciding to disobey orders and not shoot Jyn's father.
3- I'm not really convinced the end fully fits with the story Vader gives us in EpIV. 'You weren't on any mercy mission this time' and the plans were sent to the frigate in this movie and then handed to rebel fighters evacuating to the Tantive IV. It kinda fits, but I always imagined the Tantive IV being a lone ship rendez-vueing with the spies.
4- 3D ruined the picture. There's a lot of dark scenes in this film and with the lower contrast, it became difficult to see details. We had booked to see a 2D showing (it even listed 2D outside the Screen Room!), but Odeon has a bit of a mess up. We were offered a 2D showing, but they didn't have the seats my buddy wanted.
5- No Kyle Katarn!

I saw 2D as always (Ralph does not do 3D glasses on top of regular glasses for longer than 5 mins). The credits confirmed it was shot in 2D and post-converted to 3D for that version (as per Disney's policy for all their Event Movies) thus making the 3D naturally pointless. It certainly felt while watching that it was designed to be seen in 2D (which would fit the period it's set in).
As an aside when I saw Doctor Strange my one complaint was that though it was shot in 2D it was obviously designed to be seen in 3D. Few things are as distracting when watching in 2D for things to SUDDENLY COME TOWARDS YOU AND GO AWAY WHILE CONSTANTLY MOVING. The 2016 version of 'The BFG' suffered from that extensively.
Anyway...Star Wars!

Yeah, the 3d is very poor. Didn't look particulary any better in imax either.

Seemed a bit excessive that the Empire would destroy the entire Imperial Archive.
And why was there an interface for archive disks on a satellite on top of a massive tower?

Rogue One, then: this is much more like it. Not without it's flaws certainly, but it managed to do and be a wholly new and individual thing, and the cast was likable and excellently played. Managed to tie heavily into the original trilogy without being invasive of it, and the unexpected return of a player from the prequels helped to make this feel like a natural bridge between the two 'main' series rather than something entirely standalone or throwaway. The music started off pretty jarring, like a John Williams tribute act that forgot how subtle Williams could be, but soon settled in and suited the louder set pieces perfectly. There was one thing I knew leaving the film immediately that I knew I would have done differently with the climax that would A) not actually change anything from it of importance and B) made the opening of A New Hope flow better from this. I don't think you could watch them back to back and have it gel. Biggest mistake this movie made in my opinion was the use of fully GC created characters that looked unnatural upon a first viewing and are certainly going to look worse as the years go by. I understand that there were some reshoots made after Edwards wrapped on this film, and I suspect the larger roles given to these characters may have resulted from that... I think he's a smarter director than to have made these decisions.
TL;DR: Better than Episodes Two and Seven, mileage will vary on whether you like it more than Episodes One and Three. Had potential to par up with original trilogy, but just falls short of the mark.

Saw it last night in a packed (supposedly) Imax screening. Loved every second of it. I can't think of the last time I saw a movie were the room felt so tense by the end. I agree the music felt weird for a while, though it probably isn't actually bad, its just that Star Wars without a Williams score feels unnatural. I'm looking forward to seeing how well R1 and A New Hope gel when watched back to back. I know it wont be perfect but for films made 39 years apart and that are tonally so different Im convinced the best way to watch either of these films is now to watch both. CG characters not perfect but not overly distracting I gues it helps that its a universe with lots of CG characters already so they dont look out of place. Loved the small and not so small nods to Clone Wars and Rebels. Though I have to admit to missing most of them its good to know they are there.

I think the reason why it felt tense was that although we knew the plans got out, we had no idea how many of the Rogue One group were going to make it out alive.
Whilst there may be some criticism in that none of these characters (even the lead) really shine out or end up being that memorable, other than K2SO, so some may not even care if they live or die.

Didn't get chance to see it until today, but I've seen it now, liked it... don't really have any other thoughts at the moment other than CG Tarkin was creepy at times.

I think it's one wave because they've waited until the film is out. Course I'd know if I opened it.
Thing is, due to a family request I may not see this film for a fortnight. Can i keep stickers unopened for a fortnight? What kind of madness have I inflicted on myself? This could ruin Christmas.

Didn't really watch the trailers so slightly surprised to read about the large scale reshoots and how different it appears the final film is to what was shown in the trailers and not just the early trailers even very recent ones suggest a very different film.
Look forward to eventually learning exactly what went on.

Interesting reads. I know when I came out of the screening lots of moments kept popping into my head, with my internal monologue noting 'that wasn't in the film, or that...'
Fascinating how different it seems. I hope there's an extensive "deleted and alternate scenes" packaged for the home video release, or a detailed making of book or something.

An excellent film.
Loved the Episode IV X-wing pilot cameos, loved the droid cameos, loved the Leia cameo... hated Tarkin. He looked like a character from a computer game.
In 2002 they made Gollum a believable character in a live-action movie, because his facial expressions and movements were the genuine expressions and movements of a fine actor. In 2016 they continue to fail to use CG to replicate the full performance of a deceased actor. Reason: lack of the actor's performance. I hope the day never comes when they make good actors redundant. Thankfully that day seems to remain some way off.

I aim to catch it again later in the week so I can enjoy it properly without feeling ill and watching through a lurgy haze.
In other news, the DisneyMusicVEVO youtube channel has the score up to listen to legally though obviously SPOILERS, etc.
